Yeah; you would have had super ridiculous luck on both ends in order to win with that fight, even with a surprise round. This sounds like insane luck on one end as well as terrible initiative rolling & damage rolling from the PC end.

Not sure? Unless you are thinking 1h sword and board dex fighter? (17 AC from light armor, +2 from shield, +1 from defense). The damage on that character would be low, alas. 2d6 vs 1d8. :/

Note; STR fighters can get up to 21 AC with Plate + Shield + Defensive Fighting Style, and 19 AC with a 2h Weapon. Dex fighters seem to be more versatile, but STR fighters lay out the damage from my experience. Also, breaking down doors and stuff ends up being STR, as does grapple / shove /...

If the public playtest abilities were any indication (Hi Assassination!), there's probably good reasons why surprise is supposed to be rare. :D

I would reaaallly not worry about BBEG Spellcasters / etc. They're terrifying. As they should be. But as my players prove, definitely killable.

From someone currently engaged in high level shenanigans... 1) the Indomitable nerf makes my players a little sad, alas. 2) Magic Items definitely help with some of these issues; but it depends if your DM uses magic items (I imagine at 20th level players should have magic items in most games)...

For me, I just have to wonder whether they intend to create some tactical martial rules in a later book which tie to the weapons. (High Crit, etc etc) Remind me to spend some time this weekend and dig out the weapon properties I created for each weapon.
