D&D 5E (2014) 2017 Class Rank Survey: results are in!

Additionally, 200 participants seems like a pretty small sample size to conclude trends upon player preferences, I would think. Using the 5th edition subreddit as a reference point, there's almost 70K subscribers. The D&D Facebook page dwarfs this at 737K likes and 673K of them receiving regular...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you prefer to fight with melee or ranged weapons?

I'm a melee fan. Both of the fighters I've played were primarily melee. I just like the aesthetic of the armoured warrior who leads the charge (hence why I ultimately decided on Banneret instead of Battlemaster on my latest character, even though I know Battlemaster is technically superior.)

D&D 5E (2014) Why did they design Demiplane to suck?

The DMG addresses this: You need a tuning fork attuned to the specific demiplane you need, which is not something you can just get. You not only need to know a given plane exists, but now you need to figure out what frequency the plane attunes to. Lore wise you're not supposed to be able to just...

D&D 5E (2014) Where did the 6-8 encounter standard come from?

Well, the idea with the fewer encounters is that they're harder so that the Monk feels like they're obligated to spend more Ki, like how your long rest casters are encouraged to throw more big spells. Hunter's Mark and Hex are designed to be flexible with the adventuring day. They should be...

D&D 5E (2014) Where did the 6-8 encounter standard come from?

The DMG itself says that you're expected 2 short rests to every long rest. This is not a "judging by the numbers" thing, this is something the DMG outright says is design intent. I mean, rage can end prematurely. That's one reason you'd want more than three uses, even if your DM doesn't have...

D&D 5E (2014) Where did the 6-8 encounter standard come from?

Additionally, I think people are taking the sentence of 6-8 encounters as an inflexible rule, rather than reading the rest of the paragraph. The actual chunk of text the sentence is from is actually about using the table provided to calculate the adventuring day. The only real "we absolutely...

    D&D 5E (2014) I like to hit stuff, and I do it as ...

What does Banneret hitting count as? Where you don't want to just hit stuff good, but you want to inspire those following you to rally around you and hit stuff too.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond's Epanded Racial Feats are available on DM's Guild

They were never going to do that. Whatever form the Ranger revisions will take will be released publicly for free.

D&D 5E (2014) Adding +2 ability bonus to all classes. Way to make all class/race combos more or less equal.

If I ever wanted to fix it, I'd probably go with "You can point buy a 16 for +3 points, but you cannot raise a stat above 16 by any method, whether points or racial bonus". It makes race combos slight better for being more efficient, but it doesn't let them elevate it above what someone without...

D&D 5E (2014) What character generation method does your group use?

Roll, or use standard array if you dislike your roll. Of course, it depends on the game. Some worlds are better suited to point buy, some are better suited to rolling.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why D&D is not (just) Tolkien

Definitely, and I'd argue that's why the adventuring party exists as well. It's hard to play this with friends if it emulated fiction that focused on one person, rather than a group of people. As for your theory behind levelling, I'd say it's also an extension of the reason why hit points exist...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why D&D is not (just) Tolkien

Even in Gygax's games, the players started off with some notoriety. Level 1 for a fighter was veteran, after all. Gygax borrowed the high lethality as inspiration from another short story, The Seven Geases, not from the Lord of The Rings starting with average joes.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why D&D is not (just) Tolkien

Most likely. Apparently in Greyhawk it was pretty popular to see how well you could do playing it solo.

    D&D 5E (2014) Xanathar's Guide to Everything: Dungeon Master's Tools.

The one thing I thought was pretty neat is the way Magic Item Distribution is assumed. They outright say they expect overall that players will collect 100 items in their career. Going by the tables, I'd also assume that this would mostly manifest as scrolls, potions, and other items with limited...

D&D 5E (2014) (Houserule) Add +1 to Int Mod Skill

What I might do is have the amount of downtime days needed to learn a new language or tool divided by your INT bonus. So someone with a +3 bonus would get it done in 1/3 the time and 1/3 the GP cost.

D&D 5E (2014) New Eldritch Invocations in 'Xanathar's Guide to Everything' in D&D

My problem with them was less that they existed, and more that it meant that the Pact of the Undying was left out of the improvements the book provided.

    D&D 5E (2014) Xanathar's Guide to Everything: Spells

I'm hoping that the revisions to the Elemental Evil spells get back ported as errata for the Elemental Evil Player's Companion, simply because it's annoying to have two sources list the same spell but have them differ.

D&D 5E (2014) [Xanathar's Guide] What is your first PC you're gonna make?

Human Dungeon Master. I'm already in the middle of a game as a PC, and have a fairly clear idea of where I want to go with him. I'll probably end up using this books as a DM more than as a player anyway, as I usually find myself preferring to DM more than play.

    WotC Salvage: 101 Warlock Patrons

No love for the Pact of the Undying? Here's one I made for my own world: Adinamtar, the Ageless: Thousands of years ago, Adinamtar was a nameless mortal, just like any other. However, when his brother was falsely accused of assassinating one of Vor Rukoth's nobility and executed, he made his...

    D&D 5E (2014) OK, 5e is a little broken sometimes.

Sorcerer has proficiency in Constitution saves, and concentration is a Constitution save. EDIT: As for healing, it's better as a tool to bring up fallen characters than to heal in combat. The gradual loss of resources is important to the balance of the adventuring day. Healing being more...
