Rockin' it old school - give DIY a try!

Character creation will never go away. It's a bigger part of D&D now than it's ever been, and is likely to become even bigger. You correctly identified it as the thing that seperates D&D from other games. It's mindboggling to me how many people say there should be less options for creating...

D&D 4E Should hit points continue to be generated randomly in 4e?

This poll is playing out about the way I thought it would. Random HP is a sacred cow, but not as big as say random attributes is. Bioware was planning on non-random hitpoints for NWN1, and there was a huge outcry against it. Ultimately, they went with something along the lines of the "partial...

Gaming Pornography: Will 4th Edition lead to a more Realistic and Useful Game?

I'm starting to think that people have been playing a totally different game than I have. Never have I gamed with a person that was trying to "learn about the real world", nor did we ever feel particularly edified when it incidentally occured. D&D has never seemed even close to a historical...

Designers: Say Yes to Bards! Save the Class

That's definitely true. I've been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the base classes that have been released in books over the last few years. I'd play a scout, swordsage, beguiler, or knight in a heartbeat.

    Sacred Cows You Hope Die?

You have no idea how much I envy you. :( Every time I join a campaign, it's roll for attributes. Every time somebody tells me about their character, they have at least two 18s, a 17, and a 16 gained from some totally crazy rolling method. "Well, we give everyone a free 18. For the rest of...

Designers: Say Yes to Bards! Save the Class

Yeah, I'd be sad if the bard was gone for ever. I've played a few bards over the years, and enjoyed it. However, in my experience it's pretty uncommon that people play bards. I really don't think it's common enough to justify having it in the core books. If there's space for it, sure, throw...

D&D 4E How Will 4e Encourage Role Playing?

Characters have always had a defined role in a group. The "archetypical" party of fighter, mage, cleric, thief has pretty much always worked better than any other 4 member party composition. It seems to me that all they are really doing is making sure that the other classes are reasonable...

    Sacred Cows You Hope Die?

Random hitpoints per level. It is far too easy to gimp a character through no fault of your own just by rolling badly for hit points a couple of times. That sucks. Random rolling of attributes. I've always hated this one, almost as much as random hitpoints. Random attribute generation is...

The Line Between Cautious Optimism and Utter Apathy

While I'm thinking about it, have you ever tried the "You're sitting in a tavern, what do you do?" routine on your group? Don't have an adventure planned, just play off of what their characters do, and make an adventure out of it somehow. There's no better way to get into character than to...

The Line Between Cautious Optimism and Utter Apathy

Yeah, enough people have the problem that mechanics = no roleplay that there's obviously some level of truth to it. I just don't understand how it happens. I'm as big a powergamer as anybody. I agonize over what class or feat to take on levelling up. I plan and optimize my character to the...

    More magic? Oh-oh...

I think the "accross the board" part is what makes it seem scary. That doesn't seem to suggest it's something limitted to casters. It is really vague though, so it's likely not something to get worked up over.

Questions on D&D DI - Characters Stored Online & an Idea

Yeah, I think it would be pretty cool to know one of my PCs was showing up in other people's campaigns. It would probably also be good to be able to export your character to some digital format that could be used offline.

    More magic? Oh-oh...

To be honest, that quote scared me too. Now that I think about it though, it more confuses me than scares me. We know the "christmas tree" effect is going away, and that was explained as less reliance on magic items and magic buffs. We also know that there's going to be a "martial power...

New Design & Dev : Party Role

They are most likely giving it a "cheesy" term for a good reason. Different game effects probably with interact with powers of different sources in different ways. I suspect it'll act mostly like a descriptor. It might look something like this: Flawless Execution Buff [Martial] The next time...

    How to deal with dissatisfaction

Until the posters at the WoTC board push a moderator to the point that he tells them all off and quits, they aren't whinier than the WoW posters. Alternately, somebody could come up with a suggestion for a new spell that involves running over one of the moderators with a bus, gaining hundreds...

The Line Between Cautious Optimism and Utter Apathy

Over on the WoTC boards, they call this "The Stormwind Fallacy". Just because you want to play a powerful character with lots of cool abilities, that doesn't neccessarily mean that you don't also want to roleplay that character. Roleplay and game mechanics aren't mutually exclusive. Special...

Gaming Pornography: Will 4th Edition lead to a more Realistic and Useful Game?

Well, I can't argue with a man that says "tin lizzie". Though we were on opposite sides of the battlefield today, I salute you and look forward to all the thought provoking discussions you will no doubt be initiating here in the near future.

D&D 4E 4E PHB II & DMG II 1 year after release (and a new one every year after that)

Frankly, I think it's a great idea. PHBII was a fantastic supplement. Probably one of the best supplements released for 3.5. It had stuff that was valuable to everybody, pretty much. If they can manage to bang out a book of that quality every year, I'd happily keep buying them.

    OMG Fireball, Noooooooooooo!

I've actually got no problem with level not neccessarily making you better. I'm a firm believer that making good choices with the options granted to you from level ups should be what makes you more powerful. Of course, even if you almost always face challenges that are equivalent to yourself...

    D&D 4E 4e: Stats of Stat Bonus?

I doubt they are ready to slaughter that sacred cow yet. They can only get away with slaughtering a few in each edition, and this one doesn't actually harm gameplay at all, so I can't see it being a priority.
