D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

The problem with using attack penalties for these things is that casters(cleric/druid/spellsword types) tend to be quite good at boosting their attack bonus. If you allow feats to offset the penalties, anybody can take them. Magic items are the same. This is a workable solution, of course...

Which class do you hate the most?

There are several things wrong with that, but it's a more reasonable argument than "anybody can kill things, therefore the assassin shouldn't exist".

Which class do you hate the most?

My point is that classes shouldn't be disqualified from the game just because other classes can fulfill their job description. Otherwise, in several editions, we'd only have a cleric class.

Which class do you hate the most?

"Fighter, huh? What do you do?" "I fight things." "Oh, you mean just like all the other guys in your party?"

What way of playing D&D is completely incompatible with your way?

"Sometimes we go entire sessions without rolling a single die."

What is a rogue to you?

Rogues to me are non-magical combatants that fight with agility, trickery, and stealth rather than brute force. I'm far more likely to play an assassin, swashbuckler, ninja, or even ranger than a thief. I have little to no interest in being a skill monkey. The only skill I consider a must...

    Ashamed of being a Gamer?

Pretty much everybody knows I'm a gamer. I discuss my hobbies freely, though I'm more likely to talk about the ones people are more likely to understand and be interested in(ie bass guitar, running). Everybody knows I play video games, and anybody that I think would have a clue what I'm...

    "Power Sources" and Classes

You can't make a fighter with unique abilities if everybody can do what a fighter does. That's my point. An ability is not unique if everybody can do it. You don't have to give superpowers to give fighters unique abilities. Nor do you have to give them a spell list. You do, however, have to...

Robin D. Laws: The 7 Gamer Types

I am the dreaded Powergamer/Method actor. I throw myself into both the mechanics of the game as well as the rp. Unfortunately that can sometimes lead to me dominating both aspects, and becoming a spotlight hog.

    "Power Sources" and Classes

Are you capable of attempting a gogoplata? How about a ouchi gari? Or maybe a balestra? Windmill kick? Wizzer? If you are correct, you should be able to attempt all of these without using google to figure out how to do them. Martial combat is far more complicated than you make it out to...

    Assassin in DDN

If you assume that the 5e rogue is going to be fairly combat capable, there is no need for an Assassin class(4e didn't really need one). I think that assumption will prove to be incorrect, however. Thus giving the Assassin a niche.

    Assassin in DDN

If an Assassin is just somebody who kills for money, then a Fighter is just somebody who fights. I don't see why one shouldn't be able to play a thief fighter, or a mage fighter.

    Assassin in DDN

I like my Assassins as martial powered combat rogues. So, technically 1e is my favorite implementation. If Wizards had have named the 4e Rogue Assassin instead, that would be my favorite. Rogues tend to suffer from the "you have all this non-combat stuff, thus you should suck in combat"...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hopes for the 5E Fighter

Indeed, there should be some actions you have no chance at attempting. Should you be able to attempt a choke? Sure. Should you be able to attempt a gogoplata? No, most people wouldn't even know what it is, so how would they attempt it? I guess I can understand it if your point is "There...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hopes for the 5E Fighter

Because plenty of "mundane" actions require a great deal of knowledge/training to accomplish. How many of the following would you even know how to get started on: Executing a gogoplata choke. Overclocking a 2.8ghz computer to 4.2ghz. Estimating the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow...

    Genders - What's the difference?

Yeah, I guess that's true if you never bring anybody new into the group. Most groups/games I've been in have tried to keep things pretty welcoming to new players though, and there's evidence in this thread(and all over the internet) that female gamers don't tend to find mechanics like this very...

    Genders - What's the difference?

Character creation is the first thing you do in a game. Thus, character creation is where you make your first impression on your group. Do you want your first impression to be "The differences between men and women are a big enough deal to this guy that he made rules for them"? Think of the...

    Genders - What's the difference?

The question should be whether this particular aspect of verisimilitude is worth alienating 50% of your potential audience. Nearly everybody that has tried to make money off of RPGs has wisely decided it isn't worth it. As somebody that has gamed with plenty of women over the years, I also...

Player wants to be with the bad guys

Then he should accept it, and not play this character. I'm a firm believer that the needs of the group outweigh the needs of the individual. In fact, a while ago I had a long debate over this topic on this very board. My opponent was convinced that any player should be able to play whatever...
