D&D 4E What D&D 4e Should Learn From World of Warcraft

Well, you as DM should probably just help them fix their characters, IMO. If you didn't manage to do so early on, you could always just do it now and get it over with. Yes it'd be some work, and it's not that great a solution, but really, I don't think it'd be very painless and would be nice...

D&D 4E What D&D 4e Should Learn From World of Warcraft

Not to mention special abilities in D&D are more meaningful, flavorful, and tend to be useful for all of your levels, rather than having a tiny subset of abilities that all do basically the same thing, but get replaced every X levels. Not to mention the real strength, which is that D&D...

worlds and monsters is in my hands

That could be a really cool campaign. Maybe something like the PCs were caught in a power magic-user's inter-planar hideout, where time passes at a much slower rate, and most of the natural beasts of their plane have become tainted, and they have to find out why. I'm actually planning to start...

D&D 4E What D&D 4e Should Learn From World of Warcraft

WoW is essentially EQ(1) with a Warcraft "skin" as I said (and the token "quests" which I don't count, since they're largely ineffectual). The gameplay (combat) is pretty much identical (i.e., target a mob, press 1 through 0 (assuming you have your hotkeys set up in order) and repeat ad...

D&D 4E What D&D 4e Should Learn From World of Warcraft

I think WoW serves more as a guide what NEVER ever to do in D&D, than anything remotely worth looking up to. WoW is basically the mechanics of Everquest with a new "skin" of Warcraft. The gameplay is very shallow (press 1 to auto attack, then press 2 through 0 to use your abilities in the most...

    Playtesting vs a .5 Edition

Even though a lot of stuff that's going into 4e is already in some 3.5e stuff, I think the reason it's much different is because it's implemented as a system wide change. From the way some of the posts about playtesting sound, it seems entirely likely to me that they'll release a 4.5e somewhat...

D&D 4E Is it DMs or players that are more apprehensive about 4e.

There are two DMs in my group, myself and another. We only really play with the primary group over the net, via ORPG, so whether or not 4e is good largely depends on whether WotC decides to screw everyone over in terms of the "v-minis" (i.e., I might be able to convince them all to pay the...

Thoughts on charging for game table "miniatures"

Thanks for your post Glyfair. I know of the information you posted, however, from the veiled hints that the WotC folks have thrown out there, it seems like they're hell bent on screwing us all over. If they do random v-minis, then by definition you wouldn't be able to have multiple instances...

Thoughts on charging for game table "miniatures"

When I heard about 4e, I was somewhat dismayed that all ~50+ of my various books would be practically obsolete, or at the very least, out dated. However, I quickly overcame that disappointment when I heard about the software (what can I say, firstly I'm a game developer, so I like software...

does CN get a bad rap?

Demons/devils don't really qualify fully in my games. They're evil exemplars and such, but not "vile" unless they really strive beyond their ken.

does CN get a bad rap?

Yeah, I started in 2e myself so the description there fueled a lot of the characters of that alignment in my time. I think a lot of players gravitate towards the alignment though because IMO humans tend towards neutrality (IMO this can be demonstrated to the common answers to the question of...

    Urban Adventuring

Hehe, my players were getting tired of this war thread I was doing, and they'd just fought an army of ogres with some irregulars. They went to another city to find it encamped (they managed to sneak in) by another ogre army. Groans all around since they didn't want to fight another such...

    Urban Adventuring

I'd say throw some encounters which are geared towards parties at them. If they're alone...so be it. Maybe they'll learn after the first character gets it. Roll a die to find out who's first.

does CN get a bad rap?

They do get a bad rap. Mostly from players that play characters that are too psycho and quickly turn from CN to CE or the player that wants to play evil in a good 'paign and tries to justify it that way.

    A Most Unusual Adventure

This reminds me of something my younger sister tried to pull off as a DM (and rather failed at it since she was so young). She wanted to run a scenario in which the PCs (which at the time was just me, coaching her on how to DM) were trapped inside a sort of demi-plane inside a crystal scrying...

How do you handle level progression in your D&D games

If the PC is advancing within a class or PrC I require them to undertake no training, but if they multi-class or take a PrC, they have to 1) in gamedly learn about what needs to be done 2) find someone that can confer the needed expertise. This sort of thing also replies to other types of...

    re-rolling 1's

We reroll 1s and 2s on character generation (4d6 drop lowest, usually as well as optional point buy), and for HP we reroll depending on the hit die (d10 or more can reroll 1s and 2s, others reroll 1s I think).

    The "orc baby" paladin problem

See, a lot of people here are ignoring the fact that the paladin's code also includes honor. And there is absolutely none in killing babies, whether evil or not. If the "babies" are capable of honorable combat on the field of battle, then killing them to rid the world of their evil is indeed...

DM's: How do you deal with powergamers?

It may help to know specifically what types of strategies he's using. Good AC really becomes unimportant fast unless you can get it quite high. And even then you can just throw spells at him and mostly they won't have to deal with that at all. If he's really optimized for undead-killing...
