does CN get a bad rap?

An "alignment wars" thread...

Is it just me, or do CN characters (PC or otherwise) have a bad reputation? Specifically, are they considered more "villainous" than N or LN characters? I ask because there seem to be a lot of CN villains in published adventures, not to mention the fact that slaadi seem to be construed as adversaries --- or all the "I hate when someone plays CN because they always act CE" posts. So, is it just that CN gets misplayed a lot, or is there something in the alignment that makes it particularly villainous? Explain!

They do get a bad rap. Mostly from players that play characters that are too psycho and quickly turn from CN to CE or the player that wants to play evil in a good 'paign and tries to justify it that way.

Exactly, Ral. They just don't get the fact CN isn't an excuse for bad behavior. It just means they don't tend to the social norms all the time.

How can they have a bad rap when it seems like everyone always plays it.

Hong,

Yeah that didn't help matter much either.

Jeremy,

I don't play CN. Most of the time...

Except that time I was a Warlock for 5 minutes...then I went NE and devoted myself to Orcus. ;)

Maybe it only has a bad rap with GMs...

I think WotC has done a terrible job explaining "law" and chaos, actually. Lawful is poorly named, and the latter seems like you're supposed to flip coins to figure out how to act.

::looks at all his CN characters from 2nd Edition.:: I full heartedly endorse Hong and Ral's posts... Although, strangely enough I think only one CN character of mine ever managed to stay CN without becoming evil or dying a horrible death.

Rel,

Those are rare exceptions indeed. ;)

Psi,

Well I've had a few CN but so far they didn't annoy me so much as they did things I didn't expect.
