[5E] Interrupting a Spellcaster via Ready Action

I can see it going either way and as a player wouldn't really care what the DM decided. As a DM, I'd probably allow a readied action to force a concentration check to continue casting the spell. If it becomes a usual thing, I can just have the caster not cast a spell or get to a position where...

    Spell questions

Agree with 77IM. If something has total cover, ie a wall, then it isn't affected by spells. Unless there is something in the spell that specifies that it ignores that restricition. (Not sure if there actually are any spells that ignore this, though)

Hexblade, Pact of the Blade, Improved Pact Weapon and Elemental Weapon

Using a weapon as a focus does not confer it's bonus to hit and damage to spells cast while using it as a focus. Even though a magic weapon is being used as the focus, the spell is not an attack from that weapon. Being able to use it as a focus just allows you to use the weapon without needing a...

Bard in campaign full of undead

Bards can be useful in just about any game. I don't think many of the bard's core abilities are negated by being immune from charm. And they have a diverse list of spells to pick from to keep them effective. Plus some subclasses have decent direct combat abilities as well.

    Flanking Rules

I didn't enjoy advantage for flanking much for our group. It makes melee characters more powerful, since they were almost always attacking with advantage, while the ranged/backline characters were hitting less frequently. Plus, it didn't really encourage tactics for us, but the illusion of...

Sneak attacking undead and constructs seems wrong

He may not have done it purposely, but he did seem to stumble into a very effective build. It can definitely be unfun to feel like someone else is always doing the cool things in combat. One thing to point out is that for Assassinate, it isn't always an auto-critical. If they attack someone...

If Medusa dies, do petrified players/NPCs come back from stone?

Seems like not a great place to be in. I think you've laid out the solutions for them. If they want those characters back, they need to do a little extra work. If they just thought the old characters would magically instantly return and didn't run that by you to see if it was a possibility, that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Polymorph is a bad de-buff spell

It's not great as a debuff, but it has it's uses. I would totally polymorph the fighter. But I'd wait until he was close, so one of the hags could pick him up or something. Make it harder for the party to just hit him to break the spell. And even if they do, it has hopefully used up two...

    Initiative options?

My DM likes to use popcorn initiative a lot. I love that system. Basically, everyone rolls initiative at the beginning of each round. The person with the highest goes first, but then picks which of their allies goes next. The DM also rolls a die after each player's turn to see if the initiative...

Completely Clueless about D&D - Where to start & character creation question

Make sure you bring a dice, pencil, paper, and your character sheet. The Player's Handbook should be your first big purchase. Either the physical copy or on DnD Beyond if you prefer digital stuff. I don't think there is anything wrong with putting off buying it until after you've played a couple...

    Two Magic Items for Review

I think the two 1 charge abilities on the bowstring are too situational and likely to rarely be used. Long range shooting hasn't come up too often. Having it count as magical is helpful, but will become useless once the have a magical bow. I agree that the bow should just make them magical...

House-ruling 5e: Alternatives to Ability Increases and Healing

AC 20 is very rare. Most enemies that you encounter around lvl 10 will be below that, probably in the 15-18 range. Bounded accuracy helps to make weaker enemies, like goblins, still able to hit the party at higher levels, because the party's AC is never too high for it. The system is somewhat...

House-ruling 5e: Alternatives to Ability Increases and Healing

For healing rests, I would keep long and short rests as options for abilities to recharge. Then just change how much they recover for an overnight rest. Regaining HP equal to your level (possibly +CON mod as well) sounds like a better approach. Maybe have short rests heal you CON mod with a...

College of Swords spellcasting focus question

If there hasn't been a significant time since getting it, I would just ask the DM if you could retcon buying it. Just explain that you were wrong about how it worked and you feel bad about using the party's money for something you had wrong. Hopefully, they'll let you undo it. If you've already...

The creature still has it's action, it is just being forced to use it in a specific way. That way may be wasteful, but it isn't being mechanically deprived of the action. The Action is still being taken. Stinking Cloud does not "deprive you of the ability to take actions" even though the action...

Advantage & Disadvantage - Looking for a synopsis

I will parrot this. I realize that you guys might not have a ton of time to play, but it could be a good fun learning experience for everyone to try starting 5e. That way your kids at least have some knowledge of the game that they would most likely play with any of their peers. And if you guys...

Trying to make 5e more oldish and want some people's opinions

Agree with the others about playing the straight rules for a bit first to see how it works and then figuring out what you like and how the changes will affect your gameplay. If you are not happy with the shortrest/longrest times and overnight healing, I would suggest thinking about decoupling...
