Sell Me on Dungeon Crawl Classics For Long term Play, and NO Funnels

I think Tower of the Black Pearl was the first DCC RPG adventure I played. But of all of the ones listed, I'd say my favorite is Queen of Elfland's Son. It's got a strong Lord Dunsany influence, as you might guess from the title, but it doesn't slack on the dungeon-crawling aspects. Out of all...

What are you reading in 2024?

I finished reading Conan the Avenger. Entertaining, but parts of it felt too referential in a way that REH rarely was, and other parts of it didn’t feel true to Conan’s character. Still, taking the character to Khitai, the China-equivalent in the Hyborian Age was kinda cool. I also read Philip...

Quick, while everyone is focused on the 5.24 PHB...

Hmmm... Probably either Gamma World, Top Secret/SI, or Traveller.

Dragonlance Chronicles Omnibus Coming February 2025

Totally. Just look at Rothfuss - he seems to have little trouble banging out novellas and short stories, but he's still completely stuck on Doors of Stone. While I have more of a soft spot for the original Chronicles, Legends is the better-written trilogy. Their greater experience and the...

Sell Me on Dungeon Crawl Classics For Long term Play, and NO Funnels

We were playing twice a month, with four-hour sessions. So not exactly marathon sessions every week.

Dragonlance Chronicles Omnibus Coming February 2025

I kinda think that going with the high page count releases for A Song of Ice and Fire was a mistake. If you look at his previous work, much of it is novella and short story length. The Armageddon Rag, the last full-length novel he published before A Game of Thrones, was still under 400 pages. If...

Sell Me on Dungeon Crawl Classics For Long term Play, and NO Funnels

The meet is used to establish how the characters met and what shenanigans they got into. There's a bit of communal storytelling to it. Pretty much gives them a reason to adventure together and an initial goal. For example, you could roll "The PCs meet during a heist and have to work together to...

Sell Me on Dungeon Crawl Classics For Long term Play, and NO Funnels

I ran a year-long DCC RPG campaign and everyone at the table enjoyed it. We started with a Funnel; the funny thing is, I gave people the choice of doing a Funnel or Lankhmar's Meet, and they overwhelmingly chose the Funnel. In general, advancement was slow, level-wise. The party was still...

Dragonlance Chronicles Omnibus Coming February 2025

The latest Skyriders of Abraxas Kickstarter update teased something special coming for the 40th anniversary of Dragonlance. I'll probably pick this up as a reading copy, so I don't have to touch my battered originals.

What are you reading in 2024?

Necroscope is a Cold War - horror classic. One that unfortunately feels all the more relevant again.

D&D General Who’s going to GaryCon? Ticket sales are live

I started displaying flu/respiratory symptoms on Sunday and had to cancel my last event. My brother came down with Covid the day after he got back. Not a good time. Origins, on the converse, neither of us got sick, though we were much more cautious there.

What are you reading in 2024?

Like I said, pretty easy to see its influence! If that's your copy, I am jealous. Aside from PDFs through DriveThru, it's completely out-of-print.

D&D General In Celebration of Over The Top Violence in D&D

In D&D, I generally put my violence at Robert E. Howard level's of description. Gruesome, kinetic, action-packed, but don't linger lovingly on it like a Lucio Fulci movie. However, in my Cyberpunk Red game, I find myself scaling back - save for the gnarly criticals and when the party takes down...

What are you reading in 2024?

I finished Effinger's When Gravity Fails. What struck me was how diverse it was, especially for the 80s. It's also easy to see the influence it had on R. Talsorian's Cyberpunk. Now I'm reading the Nyborg/ De Camp/ Howard conglomeration Conan The Avenger.

D&D General Who’s going to GaryCon? Ticket sales are live

As much as I had a blast at Gary Con this year, it was such a plague pit that I can't see going again anytime soon.

I preordered all of them from the FLGS. I couldn't remember which one had Lolth on it, so the note the owner took down was "alt covers, except no spiders."

Yeah, there are plenty of moments in Dear's book The Dungeon Master that have...grown in the telling, that would be great on screen.

    D&D General Neolithic D&D

The fight for survival is a big part of the Neolithic world. Having visited Skara Brae, experienced the environment (more or less, considering it would've shifted over time) that they were contending with, that struggle is certainly evocative. Not if it's hunting monsters in place of elk and...
