XP Cost to use a Magical Item

Hrm perhaps I misunderstood, I thought the idea was to create new magic items that would have an xp cost to them, not that one would change current items to use xp. I'm against changing it so that all magic items requre an xp cost, but I certainly wouldn't be against creating new magic items...

XP Cost to use a Magical Item

I think it would be a fine addition. If the players decide the cost is too much for them to shoulder, I would allow them to sell it (at half price) to acquire something else, if that is feasible. I do think, however, that for an item to have an xp penalty, it should have fairly weighty effects.

    imagination vs battlemat

I 100% agree with this. Don't shortchange your characters. Your characters (beyond 1st or 2nd level at least) live and die (literally!) by combat. Unless you are playing in an entirely story based campaign (in which case, ignore this), any mid-level or higher adventurer is going to have seen...

    Seeking Feedback on Story Hour...

I was thinking about posting something similar to this (though I'm not currently maintaining a story hour on this board). What makes a good story hour? What aspects do people look for in a story hour? What do people not like in story hours? I've been thinking about posting my campaign but...

    Bard's Inspire Courage Time Limit

We ran into a situation where essentially there was no reason for the bard to stop singing inspire courage, even after the battle (as another one was imminent). I've looked through the PHB, and there doens't seem anything in place to prevent a bard from continuing the song indefinately (asuming...

Time Limit in Combat Rounds: Yes, or No?

I really don't like the only have 10 or less seconds to decide your action. While some of these things take a long time for myself (I sadly have 0 levels of any relevent PC class) to figure out, I'm pretty sure any of my characters who have actually leveled have a fine grasp of combat and it...

How often do your players loose the adventure?

Huh, I never run into that problem. Pretty much any plot hook I give my players, I'm ready for them to completely disregard it (for whatever reason). Of course, there are consequences to their actions, which they may or may not see in the future. I don't sweat about it though. I just file...

    Two players playing one character?

This situation just came up in my campaign: One of the players just moved and isn't sure he can make it each week for our gaming session. He has suggested that he alternate playing his character with another person (who currently is not playing). My initial thoughts on the matter was that it...

Help me progress my current plot (My player's stay out!)

Similar to the above idea, the human city could be in negotiations with the orcs to stay away. In exchange the tribute, the orcs will (temporarily at least) look to other places to conquer (I like the halflings for slaves idea above). To pay for this tribute the human government will start...

How often do your players loose the adventure?

For every mystery, and indeed many encounters, I give my players the opportunity to lose, and spend a few minutes on what, if anything, happens as a result of it (like for example, in your campaign, now that the coven is formed, it might become more powerful and start opening harrassing people...

    Need San Francisco gaming info

I don't know about the employees at the SF Gamescape, but the ones in Palo Alto are very knowledgable, which is a huge plus. They all game themselves (quite a lot), and play a wide variety of games. It's always nice to be able to ask the employees the pros and cons of a system or module, and...

How do you Map your world

Though I wouldn't necessarily recommend it (it is a fair amount of work), what I did was take the CivIII editor to create a map, and then I threw it into Photoshop. Because it was CivIII, there is only jungle, hills, mountains, lush grassland, plains, tundra, forest, and um... I think that's...

    The coupled cliche conundrum

Well but the ideas can spur plots based on it which previously were inconceivable. The earth revolving around the sun is an idea, but a story based on such an idea did not exist before that idea existed. While a generalized "magic" of spirits coming into your body has existed for a while, the...

    Twist my Plot. Please!

I'm actually a little fuzzy on what's going on. So if this doesn't work, I apologize. Hrm how about this. There are declared "good" echoes and declared "bad" echoes. When you kill an echo, it is automatically reborn -- but it is reborn as an innocent echo. Though circumstance or indirect...

    The coupled cliche conundrum

Well I think that new ideas do pop up now and then. Certainly at some point someone had a revelation "the earth revolves around the sun." Calculus didn't exist in any other form before it was invented. I think there are some new ideas out there still waiting to be discovered.

Need a list of fantasy books that have thievery in them

It's already been mentioned, but Silk is among my favorite characters ever (not just thieves). He's from the Belgariad Series, by David Eddings. The first book is Pawn of Prophecy.

What do undead do when they're not killing adventurers?

Thanks for all the replies folks! This is what I've decided to do: Many sections of the city willl have zombies doing what they did in normal life. Creepier still, they will ignore the adventurers unless they get in their way or attack them. There will be some inanimate skeletons lying about...

    The coupled cliche conundrum

Man makes bargain with unknown, turns out to be not what he expected. Man changes bargain in some way and things settle into an uneasy truce/balance. After some time, unknown demands more than man is willing to allow / does something the man doesn't like. Man attempts to destroy unknown...

What do undead do when they're not killing adventurers?

Soon my players may visit the ruins of a city, where some low level undead will exist. On the order of skeletons, zombies, wights, etc. (I'm not talking about vampires or other intelligent and powerful undead.) The problem is, why are they there? What do they do day in and day out when they...

Fantasy economics and other planes... unworkable?

Though I don't think it totally works, on the issue of casting spells, there may be some collusion going on to keep prices high. Also, spellcasters are going to have to set the cost at some arbitrary and fairly high value. Imagine if you offered to cast cure light wounds for free or for very...
