    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Up 35% In 2020 While Virtual Play Rises 86%

This. I can't imagine going back to hand-drawn maps for face-to-face games now.

    Variant weapon table

One of the gripes people have with the list in the PHB is that glaives and halberds are identical. I see that now glaives cost 5gp more, but are otherwise still exactly the same. What does the extra 5gp get you?

D&D General What editions of Dungeons & Dragons do you like?

I liked playing 3.5, but I never wanted to run it. I love both playing and running 5th.

D&D 5E (2014) Which Virtual Table Top are you using right now and what do you like best about it?

Other: PowerPoint, and screen-sharing through Google Meet. Obviously it's missing all the bells and whistles of an actual VTT, but there's no learning curve, and it's super easy to copy and paste in maps and minis and scale them accordingly.

D&D General Skilled Play, or Role Play: How Do You Approach Playing D&D?

Both, but in my experience there's a sharp divide within a game session, and it's usually when combat starts. There'll be plenty of roleplay and acting in character and getting into the mindset of the character and chatting to NPCs a d e gaging with the setting. Then initiative is rolled, the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Has D&D Combat Always Been Slow?

Good to know I'm not the only one using Powerpoint as a VTT! It works really well for us, and doesn't involve buying and/or learning a whole new programme.

D&D 5E (2014) Instant Death. Am I the only one who experienced this or what?

I see people claim that it's almost impossible to die in 5e, and I assume we're playing different games. I've seen so many character deaths, and experienced them as a player, and not just at very low levels. I recently had a 6th level barbarian taken out by a group of orcs and a couple of...

D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on: Midgard by Kobold Press

So, not to try and hijack the thread, but would the Midgard player's book be worth getting just for the sub-classes, races, feats etc, if you're not interested in the actual setting? How are they? Reasonably distinct and reasonably balanced?

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Again, this is why I have two separate on-going campaigns that we switch between intermittently. I, as DM, prefer my gritty, lower-fantasy, strictly limited playable races, fantasy-racism-is-a-thing, world. It's the one I've put the most effort into creating. And as far as I know, my players are...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

I have two separate campaigns running for this reason. The first is a relatively low-fantasy, gritty, morally ambiguous setting with a limited number of races (humans, dwarves, haflings, wood elves (the high elves are extinct), half-elves and (reskinned) goliaths). It's a fairly bleak world...

D&D 5E (2014) How Do You View the Combat Round in 5E?

It's not blow by blow. I mean, almost all of the defensive stuff is abstracted away into Armour Class. All the parrying, dodging, moving to let blows glance off armour etc is just assumed to be happening. Taking the Dodge action just means you're putting more effort into it.

    Helmets: Under-Used but Over-Important

A little, I suppose. It reduces damage a small amount at the cost of a smallish penalty to initiative. I guess it's more significant when fighting rabble (low-ranking mooks) because their damage is low, so the damage mitigation is more significant, and they almost always go last in combat...

    Helmets: Under-Used but Over-Important

I know in the most recent edition of Barbarians of Lemuria (and Everywhen, the generic version), wearing a helmet is treated separately to other armour, and gives a +1 bonus to protection and -1 penalty to initiative due to reduced vision/hearing.

D&D 5E (2014) What is up with the popularity of watching other D&D groups play the game?

I very rarely just sit and watch CR. Usually I'll have my tablet set up where I can see it while I'm cooking/washing up in the evenings.

D&D 5E (2014) What is up with the popularity of watching other D&D groups play the game?

It's Critical Role specific, but here's one person's answer, and she starts by saying that the idea of watching someone else playing D&D sounded about as fun as watching paint dry:

D&D 5E (2014) What is up with the popularity of watching other D&D groups play the game?

I mean, it's possible to do both, and it's much more convenient than trying to play while I'm doing the washing up.

D&D 5E (2014) What is up with the popularity of watching other D&D groups play the game?

I really enjoy Critical Role, and I've watched almost every episode. Because they're all professional voice actors, it ends up feeling as much like an epic fantasy radio play as watching a D&D game. It also helped get me into 5e (although I've been playing TTRPGs for years), and I've...

D&D General Do you allow "crossplaying" at your table? Has it ever caused problems?

Exactly the same here. We have a non-binary character in our current game, and it took me a while to get used to they/them. A couple of our players still haven't managed it. Twenty years ago, I know there was a lot of stigma about playing other genders amongst my roleplaying friends, but mostly...

Satanic Panic of the late 80's

During the 90s, for a long time before I was ever really aware of roleplaying, my mum wouldn't let me play Warhammer because it had demons in, and she said it blended reality and fantasy too much. It was only much later on that I realised that she was conflating it with D&D and buying into the...

D&D 5E (2014) It's official, WOTC hates Rangers (Tasha's version of Favored Foe is GARBAGE)

Is this not exactly what they've done with the variant class ability that will be in Tasha's? Assuming it's more or less the same as the UA that is. Land Beast (reskin to taste) and Air Beast (reskin to taste). So whether it's a badger or a bear, it will have the same stats, or a magpie or an...
