    I suppose just saying "its magic" isn't detailed enough? If so, you might have to create your own "wide scale permanent night" spell, as I'm fairly sure the PHB doesn't have one. Tunnels, well, slaves are cheaper then magic, eh? Personally, I like the "cursed with no sun" idea, but thats just me.
