Things that just bother me when it comes to D&D.

Is that actually true? I'm no expert on mythology, but I am under the impression that most gods/powerful supernatural beasties were either "born this way", or came into their power relatively quickly, then became pretty static as far as their powerlevel goes.

    Combat Superiority and Damage/HP bloat

Stoneskin and Mirror Image and a host of other defensive buffs existed pre 3e.

    Combat Superiority and Damage/HP bloat

Take out "regularly" and replace it with "at all" and I agree.

D&D 5E (2014) So did they just drop modularity ? This is what has me worried.

You can blame the "All the 4e classes are the same! Fighters have spells now!" complaints for this. People demanded separate subsystems for everything, and that's what they are giving us.

    A Warrior, a Weaponmaster and a Swordsage walk into a tavern ...

Weaponmaster all the way. If I can't play a weaponmaster style character right out of the PHB, I probably won't be playing 5e. I don't particularly care if the warrior and swordsage exist, but they can't be in the PHB unless the weaponmaster is too. The influence the PHB has over the entire...

Casters vs Mundanes in your experience

Similar experience. In my 2e group, we had 3 powergamers. Two of them played Fighter/Mages. One played a Fighter/Mage/Thief. These characters were roleplayed as fighters that could cast magic(or thieves that could cast magic, as the case may be), not as mages that could fight/steal. They...

    Are you convinced yet?

I have faith that Wizards will do a pretty good job at achieving their goals for this edition(note: I'm referring to mechanical/thematic goals, not necessarily commercial ones). They have a proven track record, which doesn't guarantee future success but does suggest it's likely. On the other...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog: Tone and Edition

The point of it is to try to reel back in groups that will absolutely not play with Dragonborn/etc, while not losing the players that like that stuff. I suspect we are going to see alot of "compromises" like this from 5e.

    The Sky is Not Falling

If only there was a way to spot hidden things without actively looking for them, perhaps they wouldn't have been so blindsided. Hopefully they develop something like that in the future.

Almost as good as the fighter

Disagree. Rogue(or sometimes Assassin) is my favorite class, and I really don't think it should be particularly good at standing still and trading blows with the enemy. It should be a highly adept combatant when it's class abilities are used effectively(and things that completely shut out...

D&D 5E (2014) [Rather Long] DM as Judge vs. DM as Storyteller in 5ed

I've always found it odd that the storyteller and referee roles are tied together. The referee should be the person who knows the rules best and has the firmest grasp on mathematics and probability. In my gaming experience, that person is almost never the DM.

    Commoner vs Fighter/Rogue vs Wizard/Cleric

An important thing to remember- if you allow somebody to try a roll for something, you are allowing them at least a 5% chance of success. IMHO, if the chance of success is below 5%, you shouldn't even allow them to roll. And there are plenty of martial maneuvers, real and fantastic, that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Who's given up on D&D Next?

I guess I wouldn't say I've given up on 5e, but I suspect it probably won't be a game I'll play. Sure, we don't have much for specifics, but their goals so far take D&D in a direction that I find less enjoyable than 4e. I could still be proven wrong on that, but I find it unlikely. I've...

    Commoner vs Fighter/Rogue vs Wizard/Cleric

Shooting a gun or crossbow isn't an advanced combat technique. Ease of use is one of the primary reasons those weapons were/are used. It's also not particularly hard to figure out how to stab somebody with a knife, or kick them in the knee. There are much more complicated maneuvers available...

    Commoner vs Fighter/Rogue vs Wizard/Cleric

There are PLENTY of things ordinary people can't even attempt without training. If I passed you my bass and told you to play the bass line from the song Alive Again by New Jacobin Club, would you even be able to attempt it? If somebody jumped you in an alley, would you be able to try to put...

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

When the combat maneuvers are in the combat chapter, the DM and players need to know the mechanics for all of them. This limits the amount of maneuvers pretty severely. When it's a collection of powers on the character sheet, the DM only needs to know the mechanics of the ones you have. This...

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

No, I'm saying that I can reasonably expect to use any power on my character sheet. Anything that is not on my character sheet is subject to: My ability to explain what I want to do. DM favoritism. DM knowledge of melee combat/athletics/physics/whatever compared to my knowledge of the same...

What are YOUR Favorite Items (and edition of each item)?

Dagger. Every edition. Such a versatile weapon. Short/light so you can wield them while grappling. Good for dual wielding. Can be thrown. Easy to hide. Cheap and easily replaceable. Can carry lots of them at once. Fair amount of uses as a non-combat tool. Stylish. Favorite versions of...

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

In my experience powers are a list of what you can do without having to beg the DM.

The First Five Books (after core)

Marketing will decide the first few books to come out. The first few books will establish the tone of the new edition. Thus I suspect the first 3 major releases will be the following: 1. Some sort of Wizard splatbook/magic book. A large part of the target audience for 5th ed basically wants...
