    Iron Man thoughts

You are absolutely correct. I withdraw my previous parental warning. Please substitute: The movie contains many scenes of people getting tortured, punched, thrown, blasted, blown up and burned. Of course the torture scenes were fine because the interrogators really, really needed to get the...

    Random 4e thoughts

It is really an interesting business model, when you think about it. Most mainstream games come out with a set of rules that come out once and then remain fairly static for, well, forever... You don't see a Monopoly 4e or Yahtzee 4e. And that sameness has allowed those games to be sold for...

    Iron Man thoughts

I am a big Iron Man fan. He was my absolutely favorite comic book character through most of my childhood and young adulthood and I followed his exploits through some really good and REALLY bad writers and artists. I even have quite a little collection of Iron Man action figures and memorabilia...

And especially in 3.0 and 3.5, where you have a really insidious case of "crunch creep." You start off with a few core classes and a few prestige classes and five years later, you have something like 50+ core classes and 150+ prestige classes. And who knows how many feats there are spread out...

That's not what I am reading about 4e, but obviously we won't know until the books come out. My understanding is that most "powers" (which are basically the class abilities) and feats are much more mechanical in 4e, i.e. they have a specific effect on the pieces on the board. More of a "this...

So, recognizing that some of my gaming buddies have backed away from rpgs, I'm interested in the group's overall feelings about the 4th edition of D&D. Personally, I am fairly ambivalent. On the one hand, I am intrigued by some of the changes, like making it possible for 1st level characters...

    New GSL Announcement

This thread was picked up on by Boing Boing this evening under a "Sleazy new Dungeons and Dragons license seeks to poison open gaming systems" headline. Link As far as bad PR goes, this horse is far, far out of the barn now.

    GenCon Registration opens this weekend!

I ended up with five games so far this year: 2 Mutants and Masterminds game I am running (which filled up amazingly quickly,) a game of BESM, a Mutants and Masterminds game and a Robotech game I will be playing with my son on Sunday morning/afternoon.

    New GSL Announcement

And as a fan, I am baffled that you would be baffled. While I might just be a dumb fan, I'm smart enough to see how many of my recent purchases have the OGL printed in the back of them. In fact, a significant portion of my gaming interest and dollars are tied up in games which are derivatives of...

    Obama in Columbus

I have it on good authority that the local fishwrap has a transcript of the entire speech and the Q&A up on its Web site.

    Obama in Columbus

I can only really recall one stupid question. And that was a middle school kid, so I am giving some slack there. Compared to the kind of questions we could have expected from certain Columbus elements, I think we acquitted ourselves pretty well. I also heard very little in his speech that I...

    BSG - Finally

    BSG - Finally

I have the one that came out a couple of years back. I'd like to pick up the BSG RPG sometime.

    BSG - Finally

I finally finished the first season of Battlestar Galactica. Great series so far. Looking forward to the second, third and eventually the fourth! Thanks for the loan Vince.

That really was the takeaway lesson I had from that game. Man, was that ever fun.

Well, I wasn't really talking about YOU running a game at the con. I think you should run games for, say, a local group of gamers. Y'know, as it fits into your schedule and such. Seriously missing the Vince games... I hope you feel up to them sometime again soon.

    Miscellaneous gaming stuff

So, I actually signed up to GM a few games of Mutants and Masterminds at GenCon. We will see if they get approved. My premise: Event Description: A new superhero appears in Freedom City, with strangely familiar powers. Is he the reincarnated Scarab? Can you keep some old foes from ending the...

    Outcast among outcasts

According to the ICv2 Web site, sales of roleplaying games fell from $17 million in 2006 to $15 million in 2007. However collectible card games rose from $550 million to $600 million. And miniatures and board games were both big... Wonder how much floorspace game stores and GenCon will devote...

    Boardgames List

Oh, I would definitely be bragging. Cause nothing gets the ladies interested like a long, long, list of role-playing games sitting on a shelf collecting dust. Except maybe an excessive amount of knowledge of pro wrestling trivia. I really make no bones about my long list of RPGs being a sign...
