    Optimizers, oh my!

So? I'm sorry, that's my fault. I specified your quote, but was asking a generalized question about it. I should have chosen my words better. I'd go so far as to avoid the first thing and stick with the second, assuming you're talking about two exclusive groups. the group could be any number...

    Optimizers, oh my!

Honestly, I couldn't say if soldiers could or could not find Iraq in my example. I asked the question more to see what you'd say than because I actually had an opinion about it. Speaking basic Arabic phrases, though... I'm not so sure. Layout of Baghdad, definitely... if they spent time...

    Optimizers, oh my!

You can travel the world without caring about or picking up any meaningful information about where you've been. If you showed the average soldier who has been to Iraq a map of the middle east without any labels, do you suppose they could point Iraq out?

    Optimizers, oh my!

Yes, but if the character wouldn't survive if the DM didn't take special care not to kill him due to your silly desire to play that character in a setting you knew he wouldn't fit in, I suggest the DM doesn't and you reap the reward for all your hard work.

    Optimizers, oh my!

^ Yes. optimizing isn't about making the super most powerfulzorz character you can, it's about making a character who's good at what they do... and you may have an outlandish idea for what you want them to do!

    Optimizers, oh my!

Hence the difference in term, though. Optimizers simply attempt to optimize their character, not break the game. Hell, a visit to the CharOp boards show that, while people have designed utterly broken optimizations, they also don't play them, and suggest that nobody else does. It's more like...

    Optimizers, oh my!

I've noticed some people complain about "optimizers", as though they're some kind of sub-human who refuses to role-play. In my experience, the people who optimize the best are also really good role-players. The line of thought is generally something like; A character whome is not optimized is...

    Doing it the hard way?

I'm flying with the 15 point buy scenerio, where your character is essentially guaranteed to suck. Organic 3d6 could be alright. But still, altering the difficulty seems like fake difficulty (or easiness, as it were) to me. If your stats are lower, so the DM reduces DCs and uses lower CR...

    Doing it the hard way?

Not me. I don't see the appeal in playing someone whose just plain gimped. I mean, flaws are actually fun, don't get me wrong, but sucking at basically everything isn't even remotely fun (to me). In earlier editions, your stats didn't really matter unless they were extremely high or extremely...

    Doing it the hard way?

Why would someone do this? I mean, except to make the game more difficult, I don't understand why it would get done.

Fighter, Rogue, Blaster, Healer . . . Balanced?

That's silly. Rolled, in order, sure, it's kind of difficult to pick a class until you know what you can do. Casters can't even cast if their primary isn't high enough, so choosing class first would be silly. However, when you choose where your stats go, or pick the value of those stats...

    D&D 5E (2014) Too many cooks (a DnDN retrospective)

Being a referee means you interpret and enforce the rules, though. Making rules is not usually part of what a mere referee does, nor do they limit players from options which are allowed in the rules. I agree the DM is a referee, and I've played for DMs I've patently disagreed with, yet went...

Why does the D&D website hide its merchandise store?

Even things I've done before, I don't go to Wizards often, and will probably continue sporadic visits at best. It's never taken me less than a few minutes to find what I'm looking for, unless I was directly linked from elsewhere. It's not unheard of for me to visit the site and it take long...

    D&D 3.x Going back to 3.5 - advice?

I have no idea how that would speed combat up, but it's not a bad idea in it's own right. Double the xp, a crit takes them down from full... not a bad idea on it's own.

Fighter, Rogue, Blaster, Healer . . . Balanced?

I don't know exactly what you two are arguing about, and, frankly, I don't care. I'm calling BS on this array. You may be correct about the Fighter, but why would a casty need anything more than a 14 in their non-primary? The benefits of having more spells at higher DCs outweighs the extra +1 to...

Fighter, Rogue, Blaster, Healer . . . Balanced?

I figure any of those that could do the Fighter's job could easily be included in a feat chain (or web). The real problem is figuring out what the fighter's job is. What does the Fighter do, that nobody else does, or at least that nobody else who isn't very similar to the Fighter does? Further...

    D&D 5E (2014) Crazy dice ideas

I'm actuall a big fan of this idea. However, I wouldn't base damage on class, but on general combatiness of the character type (like base attack bonus), modified by feats, relevant stats, etc. Incidentally, I'm working on a game right now where the kind of weapon doesn't matter, but, rather how...

Fighter, Rogue, Blaster, Healer . . . Balanced?

The best thing to come out of 3.5. I was really iffy at first, but then it wound up just being so much fun! That it evened out the imbalance between casties and fighties wasn't relevant, I only cared that fighties were fun. Fighter only or not, I still think they should scale by level. At...

    D&D 4E The Twelve Days of Th4enksgiving

I want to step in here and say that I'm thankful for Less daily powers. I've never liked resources limited by the day. Not only do they make a missed or otherwise failed daily ability useless and a waste of a turn, they also just plain don't make sense. How does succeeding at casting a spell...
