Making a Samurai: AC and Armor problem

I feel like one of your dates is wrong, unless you mean to say that Miyamoto Musashi started getting old at the age of about 240. Anyway, would it be so bad to use the ranger class? I can think of two ways to handle it easily within the existing context of the rules: 1) Remove the off-hand...

D&D 3.x 4E vs 3E... what are the main changes?

4E has actually made an attempt to codify the "outside the box" stuff in the DMG. There are some general guidelines for when you want to reward a PC for an awesome idea that isn't explicitly covered by a power or feat. 4E also has a vastly expended emphasis on terrain, so with these two rules...

D&D 3.x 4E vs 3E... what are the main changes?

3E has billions of options. 99.9% of them suck. As in, "you are a danger to yourself and your party" mind-blowingly, awfully, uselessly bad. As for the remaining .1%, 90% of that merely sucks. As in, "I'm a 20th level fighter, my friend is a wizard, so I was obsolete 10 levels ago. At least...

How frequent are dragon encounters in your game?

I voted "sometimes." I use them much more often than the other DMs I know seem to...I'm in a multi-year campaign arc in which we fought two. I, on the other hand, believe firmly that a proper D&D group should get to add some dragon notches to their belt. In 3E I carefully picked draconic...

AV: Double Sword: Light blade And Heavy blade?

A "real-life" "double sword" resembles the thing (which does in fact look the crazy glue was involved) that appears in the 3E PHB and the 4E AV like a cat resembles a bicycle. I've seen similar weapons that might work but they look more like double-ended spears...you are correct in that...

AV: Double Sword: Light blade And Heavy blade?

And that's why Heavy Blade feats use Dexterity, you unsurpassed genius. A longsword is a heavy blade. A two-bladed sword is much more like a longsword than a short sword, a rapier, or a knife. More importantly, the double sword as heavy + light blade gives it unexpected (best weapon for...

Word of Mearls: Official Player races will not get Oversized Weapons. Forked Thread

Meh. It's probably a good thing, but why did I have to come up with a bitchin' idea for a bugbear fullblade-using kensai TODAY of all days? :( Concept still works, of course, but I thought that was funny.

AV: Double Sword: Light blade And Heavy blade?

Personally, I see no compelling flavor or mechanical reason for this weapon to be a light blade. I wonder what they were thinking.

    Minions and hps

Doesn't mean they aren't poorly designed. It's been known for awhile that the zombie minion sucks terribly. I get the feeling that a lot of people in here just don't like minions. In that case, I heartily recommend not using them. I have a feeling that trying to make them something they are...

Quandary! Can I do a “Pirate” campaign with 4th Ed as it is?

Sure. I'll post my blog entry on the battle (elaborations in parentheses). [B][B]

    Minions and hps

I stand corrected. I missed that part. In that case, though, I still think it makes minions rather more challenging and more frustrating to deal with for both the DM and the players. Why on earth did they have such low defenses? If a poorly designed minion has no defenses, well, then it is...

    Minions and hps

The designers played with minions a lot. I think that for most of the playtest lifecycle they had small numbers of hit points. The designers aren't perfect, but they were considerate enough to playtest this idea for you and didn't like it. Think of it this way. The difference between a...

Night Hag... Give Me a Break...

Why would that be a problem? Effects end at the end of encounters. Anyway, your DM sounds like he's playing the wrong system if he wants to act like a total jerk and screw over players. Instead of latching onto one broken monster he should just play a system/genre that is a good fit with...

Quandary! Can I do a “Pirate” campaign with 4th Ed as it is?

I played in a "pirate" themed encounter yesterday with my Dwarven Paladin who wears plate and had never seen a lake before, much less swam in one. He was one of, if not the, standout characters in the encounter. Let's just say the Water Walk ritual revolutionizes naval warfare. And that it's...

Night Hag... Give Me a Break...

I have to agree, this is abusive and terribly unfun. What might mitigate the effect is the guideline that monsters generally don't spend X number of rounds killing an unconscious person out of sheer spite. She's going to try to KO everyone. But if this is the case, there is no reason for...

Minions - do you tell players who are minions and who are not in-game?

In KotS I was pretty blatant about it. I used M&Ms as their combat markers, and whoever scored a hit got to eat it. :P I usually don't flat-out say who's who, but I don't make it hard to figure out, either. When they were fighting a dracolich and 12 angels appeared, either they were going to...

    Thoughts on STR paladins

I'm running a Paladin with 10 Charisma. He works fine at low levels, but looking ahead I think I'm going to start using my stat-ups on Charisma, as he already has enough Con and Wisdom to be pretty well set. (Still MCing Cleric to avoid having Cha as an attack stat, obviously.)

    Tempest Fighter makes me happy.

I really like how it makes the short sword a bit more of a viable weapon. :D

Are Minotaurs underpowered, or is high-level combat broken?

I was in a fight against a Minotaur Warrior and Minotaur Cabalist in a party with me (Orc Rogue), a Taclord, and a Wizard. It was relatively challenging despite the fact that we had the drop on them and I got two rounds of sneak attack + encounter power off before they could even react. So you...
