So, I bet that the d12 is getting kicked to the curb...

I love my d12s! (And the d4/d12. Great idea.) However, for those of you losing their d12s, I would be happy to give them all a home. Please email me and I will give you a mailing address. :D

D&D Essay #1: Imbalance of Power [EDIT: 2nd draft in post 44.]

Capes is an indie superhero-genre RPG with no "referee" role.

D&D Essay #1: Imbalance of Power [EDIT: 2nd draft in post 44.]

Good point Li Shenron. The DM is the element of surprise. Nice essay.

    A shared world?

I believe the baggage of specificity. :D (Me personally, I read Pathfinder I and thought "great flavor.")

Hey while you're at it WOTC.

Movement up costs extra. See the DMG. Twice as many squares to go straight up. Movement down of course costs half - you fly straight down twice as fast. So the question is, do you even get a flying upward 5' correction. (Do you only move 2.5 feet?) Ignoring that, if you moved upward any...

Stephen Colbert mentions DnD and role-playing in NPR interview

That was a great bit. Although I think the industry has gotten fair press from Wil Wheaton and the likes of others, Colbert has the distinction of being on national television as opposed to print or electronic media.

    (Academic) Writing on RPGs

As this is about communication, I heartily recommend that you read and consider Robin's Laws of Good Game Mastering It superbly discusses the differences in play styles and lays out excellent principles for the game master. It ties right into your points about table play, supplements and story...

    Pro DMs

I have business cards, players who specifically attend conventions that I'm at, and I write all my own adventures. But I don't get paid. Does that count? :D

Different player types hogging the spotlight?

Excellent solution The Auld Grump! I think what the OP might have to consider is going metagame for the solution. Tell the powergamer (who is hogging the spotlight) that everyone gets a little spotlight time. Tell him out of game. Point out that Casual Gamer was trying to get some information...

    Why Not a 4th Book?

If they imported the zone mechanic from Iron Heroes (which they won't) or created something similar and IP (which they might), that could include traps. That would be a reasonable book. However, it would have to sell to more than DMs to make it economically feasible for Wizards I would think.

    Why Not a 4th Book?

No, that's cool. However, have you seenThe Wurst of Grimtooth's Traps ? Seriously though, I don't think we need a trap book after the core 3. It sounds as if there won't need to be much of anything after that, just Roman numeral extensions. Which now that I think about it, if they a) aren't...

D&D 4E Simple Poll - How do you feel about 4E Right Now?

Where's one thumb up, one down? I voted up because on balance I still want to see it, but my reservations grow daily. Still, until I see it, I reserve final judgment.

Check out the huge variety of stuff Fiery Dragon offers. Counter Collections umpteen. Print em out (if you buy digital) or cut em out if you get the printed pack.

D&D 4E Mearls, 4e PHB playtests, and Wedding Day?

That's excellent for Mr. Mearls! (Who's he getting married to? Someone who works at WotC or someone else? Names? :D ) I wouldn't count third party publishers as "major outside playtesting groups" by any stretch of the imagination. That is likely the RPGA and the selected volunteers.

D&D 4E The Business of 4ed Part I: The Problem

I'll accept the correction from "ever" to "than in some time". That's fair. That said, how do we know that 3E didn't introduce a lot of new blood. I meet quite a number of gamers 16 and under at conventions nowadays. There were precious few of them around between 1990 and 2000. I don't think...

    (Academic) Writing on RPGs

For a historian who's been in the hobby since before Gygax (he at one point wrote about seeing people using polyhedral solids before D&D was out), try contacting Paul Carr of the Committee for the Advancement of RPGAs. I believe he can still be reached through their website...

D&D 3.x What if 3.5 and 4E split the market?

However, some editions make new fans or bring back old ones. 3E did this. As to the market split, I think 3E actually united a diffuse market. You used to hear a lot of variety in gamers. Now, everyone plays (or is at least familiar with) D&D. Again. Just like when I started 26 years ago. One...
