Musing on Star Wars themes in RPG

Genesys is FFG’s game engine that they took from their Star Wars rpg and made it generic. So yes FFG’s Star Wars is like Genesys insofar as Genesys is Star Wars rpg’s child.

Musing on Star Wars themes in RPG

So your answer to making a better Star Wars rpg is; don't do a Star Wars rpg ? ;-) I don't disagree; that's actually pretty close to the presmise of my OP. So my question is; what would a Star Wars rpg need not to feel generic sci-fi?

Musing on Star Wars themes in RPG

I’ve got to look into this system. It’s been a few times i see it mentioned and don’t know much about it. Do you know of particularly good resources I could check to get an overview?

Musing on Star Wars themes in RPG

Ah, True! And yet it makes it a concept of destiny that can be fought against and resisted, unlike the Greek mythological concept of destiny that is rigid and immutable. Narratively, at least in the context of players-oriented rpg, the former is a better tool IMO. I think a Star Wars rpg can...

Musing on Star Wars themes in RPG

Main characters in Star Wars are pretty knightly, and scoundrels are mostly scoundrels in their background or upbringing. Once we, the audience, start following them, they become charismatic leaders, high ranking officers, and shine because their virtues outweigh their vices. Nobility of...

I'm ready for a new Star Wars RPG

I love this, I'd go as far as saying that Jedi too get to affect the story; their Jedi powers are their flavour/specifics, like "I read his mind", or "I redirect the blaster shot with my lightsaber". Perhaps key phrases like this is enough to support characters' powers, including Jedi.

I'm ready for a new Star Wars RPG

I tend to agree with @Bill Zebub ; the best system for Star Wars would be one that was created for Star Wars with a modern outlook on rpg and based on the themes of the franchise similar to how TOR was created for a late-3rd age Middle Earth rpg. I started this thread not knowing of this one...

Musing on Star Wars themes in RPG

EDIT: i just found this thread: I'm ready for a new Star Wars RPG, which is more than à propos. I decided not to delete this one and orient it solely on themes rather than systems. Somebody (cant remember who EDIT: it may have been @Bill Zebub) in another thread said they wished for a Star Wars...

D&D 5E (2024) Baldur's Gate 3: List of Mechanical Differences from 5e (need assistance to fill the list)

That’s how I like falling rules to be; punishing when fall is unintentional, less so when jumping is voluntary

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D24 Spellcaster Subclasses: Thematic Unity

that would have worked. I'm satisfied with land/sky/sea/animals however.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D24 Spellcaster Subclasses: Thematic Unity

Not to mention warlock has both Fiend and Celestial, complementing the Sorcerer's law/chaos axis with good/evil axis. And Archfey vs Great Old Ones subclasses play on the creepy nature outsider vs creepy out-of-nature outsider

    D&D 5E (2024) Unearthed Arcana Playtest Packet 7 Live on D&D Beyond

I wonder how strongly they are holding to the « Sorcerer = law/chaos axis and Warlock = good/evil axis » concept they are going for.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E Without Magic (PCs)

It depends how far down the « no magic » hole you’re aiming for. Personally, I prefer keeping single sources, so either D&D only or use one third party set of rules (which may or may not directly rely on PHB). Assuming D&D only… I’d keep everything from fighter, monk, rogue, and barbarian of...

What Licensed RPG Do You Wish Used A Different System?

7th Sea 2nd edition I really want to like this game but the resolution mechanics is just too alien to my mind, both as a player and as a DM. I’m not sure what to do with it either though, or what system would be a good fit.

    D&D 5E (2024) Barbarian (Playtest 7)

Odin: « Heimdall, anything to report? » Heimdall: « Not much sire. Some punk from some forgettable realm barged in with his friends all gun-ho, wishing death to some lich. They broke a few things, nothing of real value. They were very sorry when they realized their mistake. They’re in your...

    D&D 5E (2014) Will Baldur's Gate 3 Change D&D?

It will likely become emblematic of a certain era/style of play and therefore shape the course of D&D, but I don't expect it to inherently change the game. D&D is a cultural phenomenon and therefore evolve in time. I expect BG3 to be a morphemic element, but one among many others.

    D&D 5E (2024) Unearthed Arcana Playtest Packet 7 Live on D&D Beyond

Are there any instances where one could use magic without casting a spell? Is there a different action for using a magic item, for example?
