D&D 5E (2024) Should a general Adventurer class be created to represent the Everyman?

To be fair though, that’s one of the reason some people have issues with multiclassing: it often makes no narrative sense. It was a background joke for a segment of the Order Of The Stick too.

D&D 5E (2024) Is it possible to balance the six abilities?

Oh, non-class abilities based on the six? I kind of dig that. I presume all five other abilities would have similar « traits »? but other than Hearten, these traits don’t particularly favour a high Wis score however. Unless you can only have them if you have a certain Wis score?

What are some alternate ways to think about archetypes?

There’s many ways of defining archetypes but the « what they do » is the easiest tool to use for a rpg. Otherwise, I remember a few systems running around « how they do it », giving archetypes such as « the strong dude », « the quick guy », « the clever girl », « the pretty chick » etc, which...

    D&D 5E (2024) Line of sight ruling

So that’s why you can’t see the frightened ostrich when it puts its head in the sand! Whoa, I didn’t expect D&D rules to be so realistic!

D&D 5E (2024) Is it possible to balance the six abilities?

… but part of D&D’s identity is this commitment to the six abilities. My impression is that many players don’t want designers to advance D&D that much, or at least, not in this direction, as frustrating as it can be sometimes.

D&D 5E (2024) Should a general Adventurer class be created to represent the Everyman?

@Minigiant can correct me if I’m wrong, but this class would be meant as a PC class; not a class for NPC. Ultimately, the question is « if my character’s concept is ‘son of a baker gone on an adventure’, which class fits, now that they’re all represent specialist archetypes each requiring years...

D&D General Would You Play High Level (12-15);Wiith Pre Generated Characters? Mostly 5.0/5.5 but theoretically any edition.

Im not as adverse to the idea of pre-generated characters as most posters here. I find I a creative and enjoyable RP exercise. I wouldn’t want to be « directed » however; once the character is given to me , it ceases to be the DM’s creation and it becomes mine to play and interpret. For the...

Do Shorter Lists Make Players/GMs More Creative?

In my very modest experience, creativity requires two things: Room to express itself Guidance or directions to orient said creativity Even in a « think outside the box » call to creativity, you need guidance to know what the box is in the first place. So creativity can be stifled by lack of...

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

perhaps they can’t build bridges; that’s what makes them bigots in the first place. Not over the rivers we’d like them to cross at any case. Oftentimes, the responsibility to build a bridge is on the party that is the most able to. Sometimes it’s unfair, sometimes it’s the only fair thing to...

D&D 5E (2024) Is it possible to balance the six abilities?

Personally, I find it the most tolerable merging, but others might disagree. Even with a merged STR+CON stat giving bonus hp, it’s still not eclipsing DEX. It would be eclipsing the other abilities though. Sounds sensible I’d go back to fortitude/reflexes/will, and add perception. It’s been 15...

D&D 5E (2024) Is it possible to balance the six abilities?

If Con and Wis are still in the game, they might as well be like the other ability scores. Completely folding Con into Str and Wis into Int has more merits, even if you decouple bonus hp from (reformed) Str and perception from (reformed) Int

D&D 5E (2024) Is it possible to balance the six abilities?

Defining what a rule does rather than leaving it too wide for interpretation will always help with said rule acceptance, but IMO, you shouldn’t care about malcontents beyond those within your own group. As far as my own malcontentement is concerned, I’d be more upset about ability score...

What Does the RPG Hobby Need Now?

I wish that was « most people ». Many in our groups are musicians, actors, and stage techs, so we’re often off on a gig here or there. Otherwise they’re health services workers, no doctors in our groups but various nurses and hospital equipment techs that often have to work nights on rotary...

What Does the RPG Hobby Need Now?

Oh believe me I’m not telling anyone what’s good or saying what’s better. I’m with you and Micah on that matter. I’m only observing that given two products of equal quality and equal availability, the official published product will be more popular despite being more expensive. If the 5e Star...

What Does the RPG Hobby Need Now?

Im sure a lot of people don’t care, but many others do. Enough, I think, to make @Reynard ´s comment true (« if it were official, people would actually buy and play it »)

What Does the RPG Hobby Need Now?

Oftentimes, yes. Published, even by your own publishing company, adds credibility in the eyes of customers in a « fake it until you make it » kind of way. [edit] that sounded quite diminishing of self-publishers here, which wasn’t the intent. In a vast majority of cases, this credibility is...

What Does the RPG Hobby Need Now?

Definitely not! Just like because it’s fan-made doesn’t mean it isn’t an excellent product. But for many people, even if just on the subconscious level; published = already went through some quality control and professional approval. [edit] precision: that is what being published means; gone...

What Does the RPG Hobby Need Now?

But if it’s free it’s still just a fan-made product. If its published and purchased it’s like a seal of approval; its professional instead of amateur, which in the subconscious of enough people makes it that a paid official product has more worth than a free version of the exact same thing.
