    Game Elements from Other Systems

I dont know if Arcana Evolved qualifies as "non D&D" but if it does: -heightened and diminished versions of spells (such a simple way to make spells more interesting) -racial leveling (take a level in your race instead of class) -talent type feats (stronger feats that you can ONLY take at...

How important is multi-classing, and why?

I don't see multiclassing as needed. I do see custimizable characters with MORE choices as needed, and multiclassing was A choice, but not necessarily an important one. I need wizards who can try and ONLY charm people, or fry enemies with fireball, or use every school of magic equally. I need...

Pathfinder 1E Dont try to out Pathfinder, Pathfinder

I think that some of the discussion around modules misses a point that is really well expressed in this article (http://www.enworld.org/forum/news/315800-4-hours-w-rsd-escapist-bonus-column.html#post5762025) I just read it, and its very good. Particularly this quote What he elaborates...

Ryan dancey hints that DnD will become a board game....

Great article. Thanks for posting it, very interesting read.

    How important is combat?

I agree with the extremely complete rules point, it almost felt like my players became LESS creative in combat. They were less likely to say "ok well I try this thing that is toally not in the rules" and just let the DM see if it works. I think because the rules were so complete, and so clear...

Pathfinder 1E Dont try to out Pathfinder, Pathfinder

I sort of agree and sort of disagree. Pathfinder wasnt as much of an update to 3.5 as 3.5 needed. As someone who loves PF and 3.5, there is still a lot of change that could be made to make those systems better. 4e had a LOT of good ideas that made the system simpler and easier to use, made...

    I can't keep doing it

They played fine in my campaign.. I barely know the changes they made. They were changes sure... they tweaked the ranger a bit for example, but unless you were very very rule based you could use either version in a game without noticing.

    D&D 4E Things I Learned From 4e

Wow you said it. I read this a second time and think that is an incredibly conscise description of what 4e taught me.

    How important is combat?

I just saw a quote in a thread where someone said combat occupied 90% of their campaign. This comment jarred me a bit, because in my best campaigns I think we are pushing 20-30% combat. It makes me wonder how it is possible to unify these two play styles. I think 4e sort of exacerbated the...

    Should There Even Be Roles?

I think that you took the time to find those quotes shows very little about classes in 2e D&D. For example the wizard or the cleric could have any role depending on what spells and schools you focussed on. A necromancer would be very different then and evoker or a illusionist. Taking away...

Ryan dancey hints that DnD will become a board game....

4e is already too much like a board game for my tastes. Its my hope that they will move away from this type of goal in the next edition. Not that I don't like board games, I love board games, I just also love D&D

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E: A Danger of Fragmentation?

From the OP "Or to put it another way, if 4E encountered unexpected problems by not being inclusive to all/most playstyles, what equal but opposite dangers should WoTC watch out for if/when 5E swings in the other direction?" I disagree with that assertion, for one reason. I dont see how 4e...

    D&D 5E (2014) The 5E Magic User

I would argue for two types of spellcasters in the core rules. Something like a traditional 3e wizard, and something simpler like the 3e warlock or a sorceror or a wizard that mostly does ranged attacks like an archer but without a lot of spells. There needs to be choice, some people like...

Adventures will set the tone more than the system

The first 4 that WOTC published for 4e were really really really bad. Total mini battle fests with tacked on stories. I completely agree, that at least the first few adventures need to be intriguing and allow for a variety of play styles.

    I can't keep doing it

That makes a lot of sense, you were in effect forced to buy new books. But the difference is that it was entirely possible to play a 3.0 AND 3.5 system simultaneously, it was done a lot, somewhat encouraged and not some wacko rare thing. The same is not true for 3.5 and 4, it wasn't easy to...

D&D 5E (2014) Should 5e classes be Complicated or Simple?

I like the idea of having choices. I think that in the older editions, the simple class was always the fighter, but this wasn't a solution because what if I want to play a simple mage? I would be happy with, a simple version and a complicated version of each class in the INITIAL book (I dont...

    I can't keep doing it

Who actually viewed 3.5 as a whole new system anyways? It was the exact same thing with some errata and different tables (that we mostly ignored anyways). Sure I bought some 3.5 books, but comparing it to the 2-3 or 3-4 transition is a bit odd. I support WOTC in making new editions whenever...

    More Movement In Combat!

Towards the end of 3.5 and full bore in 4e we went with an lcd projector, with minis and detailed maps and all the tactical stuff. What 4e taught me is that stuff bores me and my group. Some of my best campaigns ever had the DM simply verbalizing the battle, and people verbalizing what they...

D&D 5E (2014) Should 5e classes be Complicated or Simple?

So I've been drawn back to the Forums because of my hopes for 5e. Montes return along with the last statement by WOTC have given me hope for it. And I'm looking for a bit of change from my last Pathfinder campaign. I wonder what peoples thoughts are on the quest for easy to learn and balanced...

    D&D 4E Things I Learned From 4e

I ran a LOT of WOTC modules. And wow, you just said exactly what they felt like. It was REALLY REALLY REALLY different from the old Dungeon Magazine adventures (by paizo), and it spoke to the philosophy of what D&D was to the designers. To me D&D is a grand story, that the players help create...
