    Firefly RPG I want it!

Someone's doing a Serenity RPG, and Eden already published Spacefarers and Prairie Folk, which is basically Firefly (w/ Cinematic Unisystem) and my preferred version.

    Immersion, Threat or Menace?

Immersion is a thing that players do. It basically assumes that the player attempts to act as much like the character as possible; this in and of itself is nothing bad. However, it approaches the problem from the wrong direction. A player should not be viewing the interests of their character as...

    Immersion, Threat or Menace?

Why don't people engage in immersion? I think that's a bad term, by the way; I certainly don't "immerse" myself in-character and I do view characters as tools. But I view them as tools not merely to achieve the acquisition of items and XP, but to achieve dramatic or story ends as well. I know...

    Immersion, Threat or Menace?

I doubt many people put too much emphasis on stuff like "getting a room at a tavern" and "doing your taxes." But, "dueling your mortal enemy" or "begging for your lost love's life" or "negotiating a cease-fire" requires a lil' bit of immersion to be truly enjoyable.

What does a company have to do to lose you as a customer? To win you back?

I suppose they'd have to kill a puppy or something. We'll have to agree to disagree on the nWoD (as I think it is better in every possible category than the oWoD), but if you're looking for a high-quality new WW book that'll prove useful for an oWoD campaign, check out Mysterious Places. It's...

Worst RPG System You Ever Palyed?

I think I know where his problem is; which is why I asked him what the name of the book they were using was. You see, there *is* a book in the Shadowrun product line that you could make characters with but wouldn't have the combat rules...the Companion. My theory is, based on their description...

Worst RPG System You Ever Palyed?

Huh? Look, I don't like Shadowrun either, but the book has those rules. Lots of them, in fact. What's the title of the book you're referring to?

Worst RPG System You Ever Palyed?

Wait, what? You couldn't find the combat rules in Shadowrun? Most of the rulebook is... Oh, wait, irony. Hah!

You are correct. Absolutely right. Storytelling in gaming is something that only appears after a given session or adventure is concluded; it's an on-the-fly creation of a tale. When someone refers to a game emphasizing storytelling over some other element of game, they refer to the fact that...

How did you learn to GM?

After the brutal and arbitrary death of my parents (Rocks fell, they died), I travelled the world, using my single-minded dedication and vast wealth to learn the secrets of NPC design, campaign structure, world building, pacing and improvisation. Finally I was contacted by an ancient secret...

RPG systems you liked -- much to your surprise

Cinematic Unisystem. I was...well, knocked off my feet. The game is, for my purposes, perfect, if a little short on the options (which Beyond Human will solve, in time). I was also impressed greatly by Warhammer FRP.

Interesting Ryan Dancey comment on "lite" RPGs

Well, I'm partly happy I didn't see this thread until it had already gone on waaaay to long to read, and I'm kind of dissapointed. In any event, as per the original claim, Dancey is full of crap, except for one point. It can take just as long to create a character. At least for me, I tend to...

    D&D Social Stigma

I sure wish they would. I lose a lot of shirts to bloodstains. Plus, half the Catholic population of my town thinks I have the gift of prophecy. Anyway, quite frankly, if you aren't a weirdo about your hobby, I find few people will treat you like a weirdo. Just be open and frank: "Yeah, every...

Worst RPG System You Ever Palyed?

As a side note, wouldn't it be more appropriate to call a group of rabid C&C fans a "Crusade" rather than an inquisition? I mean, I'm just sayin'...

Worst RPG System You Ever Palyed?

I would go so far as to say that, while GURPs is certainly not for everyone, it is an excellent game. As far as I can tell (and from my brief GURPs gaming experiences), it does what it sets out to do very well. It does have flaws that aren't so easy to assign to personal preference- it does...

Worst RPG System You Ever Palyed?

Jackalope King: I appreciate you didn't like C&C, but your post displayed so many assumptions fundamentally alien to my conception of what good gaming is that I can't help but wonder why you thought you'd like C&C in the first place. In any event, I'd like to quibble with part of your...

Worst RPG System You Ever Palyed?

I bow to your superior WHFRP knowledge; I've only recently become a fan. Yes, I am keeping my eye on that one.

Worst RPG System You Ever Palyed?

I'd like to pitch in a defense for Warhammer FRP, if I might. The career system is there for several reasons. One, it is to reflect the harsh and capricious nature of the world. You've got no real control over where you end up (until the game begins, o'course)- if you're lower class, you're...

    Good Non-d20 systems?

Oh, hell, how could I forget Ars Magica? Produced by Atlas Games. Just released an excellent Fourth Edition. It's set in Mythic Europe, which is historical Europe plus wizards, dragons, miracles, etc. It's one of the best, and arguably the most popular, historical games ever produced. It's also...

    Good Non-d20 systems?

I suppose some argument for a bias could be made, but since I don't read the Exalted tagged threads, I never really notice. Anyway, as RPG.netters know a lot more about fantasy games than I do, I just suggested he check it out.
