Good Non-d20 systems?

For even better response, try RPG.net. That's not tied to D20 as ENWorld is, so you'll find a wide diversity of opinions, tastes, etc, for the "Obscure" roleplaying crowd.

I'm not noticing a lack of diversity of responses being offered here...

better is relative...they will promote Exalted till the end of time there. Ya, one will get more obscure and small press suggestions but those are really not always better either. :\

It's true there's a large contingent of Exalted fans there, but there's also large numbers of fans for all sorts of things. And, of course, it's the place to go for non-D20 discussion.

(Note, people, I'm not bashing ENWorld at all.)

I know you are not basing EN World, it is just that RPG net likes to think of itself as more fair an open minded RPG site but it has pretty heavy biases. That of course does not stop myself and many other prominent members here from going their daily. They actually have been getting more d20 discussion over there in the past few months.

I suppose some argument for a bias could be made, but since I don't read the Exalted tagged threads, I never really notice. Anyway, as RPG.netters know a lot more about fantasy games than I do, I just suggested he check it out.

Speaking as a frequent RPGnet participant, my thoughts exactly.

Oh, hell, how could I forget Ars Magica?

Produced by Atlas Games. Just released an excellent Fourth Edition. It's set in Mythic Europe, which is historical Europe plus wizards, dragons, miracles, etc. It's one of the best, and arguably the most popular, historical games ever produced. It's also got some neat concepts that might re-invigorate your gaming, like troupe-style play.

Savage Worlds is a good system, very customisable.

If you want grim and gritty though, you can't go past Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. There are no heroes in that world, 'cause they all end up dead if they're lucky, or corrupted by Chaos if they're not.

I don't know how I forgot it either. I have 2nd edition, and just picked up 5th, which is very nice. Could work for a Black Company-like campaign, very well indeed, since the power levels of each type of AM character - with wizards at the top, companions (like, say, Croaker and some of the more powerful non-wizards in the books) further down, and grogs (basically the more minor non-wizards and grunts) at the bottom - really seems to fit the books.

Go with Warhammer Fantasy Role Play if you like grim and gritty. Its rules light, atmoshpere heavy, and grimmer than about any other world out there. The new 2nd edition is out now, and having read through 80% of it now, I can say its an incredible game- you won't regret buying it.
