GMs - What type of PCs would you like to see in your game?

Years ago i ran a few games were the players took actors and i made up character rolls from which they could choose from. It was all B grade comedy horror stuff so whoever had his actor survive till the end credits was doing well. I made up some cards that the players could use to get extra...

Rubbing Elbows with Powerful Known NPC’s

It must be the group of friends i play with but if any notable npc shows his face its open season on who can get the kill. I think this mentality was first introduced with fewmaster toad in the dragonlance moduels. He was the NPC you were not allowed to kill so we made it a group effort to hunt...

Kitchen Sink or Limits, Which for You?

As a DM i dont realy care what the players take in regards of race and class as long as its a well thought and intelligently designed. Taking x race and y class just to be the biggest nob then as DM i reserve the right to act like a nob and kill the character So everything works out in the end.

How do you like your elves?

I had in one long running campaign world with three types of elves. I had the high elves that had fallen from grace. Basically most of the taverns and brothels were run by high elves. Their moral code was in the toilet and they only wanted to do was drink, gamble do drugs and have sex. I...

What kind of gamer are you?

You Scored as Butt-KickerYou like a streightforward combat character. After a long day at the office, you want to clobber foes and once more prove your superiority over all who would challenge you...

Most loved or hated NPC of all time?

I ran a d6 star wars campaign for 10 years and had a recurring pirate that when his name was spoken one of the players used to actually start sweating. It was quite fun.

What's your favorite edition of D&D (so far)?

1st edition Ad&d still rules. Oriental Adventures and Dragonlance are still favorites to play. As well as 1st edition Forgotten Realms. My best loved character is from Dragonlance a Gully Dwarf Barbarian with poison tipped darts with blowpipe and a spear. His only armour was a pot that he...

What are you working on? (Playing, GMing, desigining, etc)

I am currently working on a retro themed sci fi system. Its hard to describe the background but its kind of like a cross between Buck Rogers and Star Trek. So all my time is taken up with creation and playtesting.

Coaxing the new player to the table

I would do a one on one game for her. She will get an understanding of character gen and game play. From there she can decide if she wants to join the group or not.

    Should combat be more chaotic?

All combat should be chaotic. It makes for a more interesting encounter if strategy and tactics the characters devise can be derailed mid combat. 1st Edition d6 Star Wars was great at this with the hasting rules. You could literally act so fast the npc had no time to react or vice versa...

    Granting companion animals, pets, familiars

I have never had any issues with players having pets or familiars. I dont play 4th edition so not sure how they are handled with that system. But in old 1st and 2nd edition it was quite common for a mage to have a small animal as a familiar and also have a trained war dog at his side. I...

Irresponsible use of magic and other WMDs

Not sure what alignment he was by the end. I know he started as Lawful Neutral. I guessed he was using a ring of mind shielding when the paladin in the party started to get a bit suspicious. Near the end he was an 18th level mage with an arsenal of magic items at his disposal so no one pushed...

Irresponsible use of magic and other WMDs

In an old 2nd edition ad&d game the mage didnt like the attitude of the inn keeper. (the town was biased against magic users) so he calmly walked outside and cast death spell. The same mage later on didnt like the local lord who was throwing a banquet. So quietly in the dark he casts...

    Hiring the PCs?

I have used plot hooks like this before. Usually in my games i have guilds. Fighter guilds, rogue guilds, adventure guilds. This makes it easy as a plot hook to have the guild master inform the player that the king has asked for able bodies for a quest and he has volunteered you. If the...

    Talent Trees - Your Thoughts?

This thread should be called how can we turn D&D into more of a computer game. Talent Trees Seriously? Diably 2 had talent trees and its 11 years old. Or more importantly lets make D&D more like world of warcraft. Talents trees suck. They pigeon hole characters into defined crappy roles...

    Random thoughts

Yep advertisement is the key. Back in the 80's when i first got into roleplaying nearly every marvel comic had a d&d advertisement in it. They had commercials for the basic set. They had a cartoon series based on d&d. Ad&d toys, comic books, stickers and nearly anything else you could put an...

What Games are Best for Campaigning? Which are Not?

I totally agree. For me a campaign is more than just leveling my character or getting better skills. Its about the long term goals of my character. A campaign is just a series of adventures that flow from the end of one adventure to the start of another. But below the surface you have the...

Do "old school" RPGers have an advantage?

I will have to say that i didnt believe at first that old school gamers had an advantage but after much thought i would have to say yeah we do. When i first started roleplaying in the early 80's there was not much competing for my time and money as a kid. Computer games were archaic at best...

The Ethics of )(*#$ing with the PCs' plans

Its always good to keep the players on their toes. I like to throw in the magic item. Give a small group of kobolds a wand of lightning or the Ogre a magic sword and watch the players squirm. The best part of being a GM is watching the players formulate new plans to combat the curve ball you...
