D&D 5E (2014) Has anyone ran an encounter (or fought) with The Kraken form the MM?

The Critical Role group did recently. I think it was this episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMEIgwyv2Wc&t=17763s&index=99&list=PL7atuZxmT954bCkC062rKwXTvJtcqFB8i It was a very intense and fun fight to watch.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

I don't know why it persists, because it is a big world and takes a lot of effort and time to really understand the whole thing, and they did change it around a lot over the years. But it is a great campaign world if you ignore the stuff that came after 1372 DR, imo. I didn't realize how great...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls “…it’s now obvious how to live without Bonus Actions”' And 6th Edition When Players Ask

Sure it complicates the game. Having magic in the game as opposed to just martial fighting complicates the game. The question is, "what's the right balance of complication?" Bonus/minor actions allow you to not waste a whole action on something that shouldn't take that long. They give more...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls “…it’s now obvious how to live without Bonus Actions”' And 6th Edition When Players Ask

Bonus actions work fine, and I don't like his initiative system proposal. There are some things that can be improved, but these are not them.

D&D 5E (2014) What is the best D&D Campaign Setting and why?

I'm a little confused by the question and what you are trying to accomplish. But in terms of your title, my favorite campaign setting is Planescape. Evocative design and beautiful art. Because you can use it as a part of another campaign world, I pair it with the Forgotten Realms.

D&D 5E (2014) Island Adventure and Slow Natural Recovery Question

That's so cool! Thanks for your contribution, it's a great optional rule.

D&D 5E (2014) Island Adventure and Slow Natural Recovery Question

A couple of points. In the house rules I use, my characters still typically are able to get to full health by the time they start their next adventuring day if they still have some Hit Dice left over from the day before. But even if they do, they will be using that resource. What it means is, if...

D&D 5E (2014) Island Adventure and Slow Natural Recovery Question

In my game, using HD is always player initiated. It is the act of applying bandages. The players choose when to do that, no matter what. So again, I don't see the difference you are pointing out. It's a matter of taking a short rest during one part of the day vs. another part of the day. It's...

D&D 5E (2014) Island Adventure and Slow Natural Recovery Question

In my game, spending HD always comes on short rests. Now, it may take place before or after a long rest. The long rest simply restores the HD and class abilities, but doesn't grant automatic full health. Here are my house rules for it (and I've taken these rules in part from another poster's...

D&D 5E (2014) Island Adventure and Slow Natural Recovery Question

I wouldn't call it more elegant. It's simpler to be sure, but that doesn't always equate to elegant. It's a bit less realistic. It's a cudgel approach to healing. Why would players deciding how many HD to use on a long rest be so much more difficult than deciding how many HD to use on a short...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Beauty of Encumberance

I use the very cool equipment tracking sheet that you can find here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/rpgdownloads.php?do=download&downloadid=1232 It's amazing, and my players keep track of day-to-day adventuring gear using it. (It uses the more realistic and gritty alternative encumbrance rules.)...

    D&D 3.x Breaking Out 3E Again

I use the 5th edition but base my campaign in the FR circa 1372 DR, so I use tons of 2nd edition and 3rd edition Realms material. I was never a fan of the changes made to the Realms with 4th edition and beyond, so I fully support your decision.

[UPDATED] Here's Mike Mearls' New D&D 5E Initiative System

You could always have your players roll for initiative at the start of the session and at the end of battles to set up for the next one. That way the initiative is already set when that dragon attacks there is no delay. Rolling for initiative every round is not for me, and I am not convinced it...

[UPDATED] Here's Mike Mearls' New D&D 5E Initiative System

His concern is to speed up play and add tension, but his system has you roll each round and is more complicated? I don't get it.

Legal issues with a Magic Item Shop generator for 5th edition

I am a programmer and Web developer. I am creating little javascript app to generate a magic shop item inventory. Various items will either be in stock or not in stock based on randomization, with common items being more likely and rarer items being less likely. The app will also randomize...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

I love to play with great, thoughtful DMs like that too, but that experienced DM had to start somewhere, just like you and I did. This is how D&D has always been: people jumping into a game as a player or a DM and not really being sure about all the rules details. And so you have to give some...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Matter Of Initiative

I'm not arguing for changing the initiative rules; I'm arguing for playing according to the rules as written in the books. That means the assassin may in fact get advantage on a roll and deal critical damage if he attacks from hiding, the same way a player character can. That's how the rules...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Matter Of Initiative

I wondered that too. :) It sounds as though Greenstone doesn't think an assassin NPC should be able to do what an assassin is supposed to be able to do. If his main question is about using the shield spell as a reaction, I clarified for him how reactions work during the first round when...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Matter Of Initiative

I would do this if I needed to and it made sense. But OTOH, in the example you give, I think a better way to look at it is that the group switches from their non-combat exploration initiative order to their combat initiative order. In other words, initiative is always on even for non-combat...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Matter Of Initiative

Everyone rolls initiative from the start. But the characters who are surprised are in the surprised condition until the end of their turn. After their turn ends, they are no longer in the surprised condition and can take a reaction. (But they have lost their action and bonus action and movement...
