"realistic" giant insects in d20 System

So, here's a question for people: i'd like to make the giant insects in my game more "realistic"--that is, not as they really would be (suffocating and collapsing under their own weight), but as they really are, except scaled up in size. For sake of this discussion, i'll start with ants, since...

    D&D 4E Hopefully D&D 4E will give us feats every level . . .

Not necessarily. You just generalize. Make a general rule, something like "you can trade off 3 pts of any combat statistic for 2 of another, or 5 for 3", and let it apply to AC, BAB, damage, maybe some other things. That subsumes and replaces Combat Expertise, Power Attack, fighting defensively...

    D&D 4E Hopefully D&D 4E will give us feats every level . . .

People keep talking about everybody taking the same feats. Maybe, with the relatively narrow selection in D&D3[.5]E--though the only feats that were consistently taken in our D&D3E game were by characters going for the same niche/schtick. The closest to an "everybody wants it" feat, IME, was...

    D&D 4E Hopefully D&D 4E will give us feats every level . . .

Sorry for the slight thread hijack, but why would Improved Initiative be worth 3pts? You're more likely to go first in the 1st round, but after that, you're no better off than anyone else. It's always seemed like one of the least-worthwhile feats to me.

Mechanically? No idea. The setting, however, is pretty radically different from D&D's default assumptions. Whereas Everquest is essentially D&D turned up to 11 and adjusted to work better in an MMORPG, and AU pretty much is the same sort of fantasy as D&D, but focusing on slightly different...

Of course, part of that is that you're selling PDFs. The added value of the real thing is pretty minimal compared to a digital extract of the OGC--the closed content, of course, and then any prettying-up. Honestly, if I could get your content for free (legitimately--that is, if you had chosen to...

OK, either you're reading something that isn't there, or you're gonna have to spell it out for me. The parts you quoted, and particularly the bit you emphasized, seem to support my position, not yours. You specifically bolded the bit that says you can't indicate compatibility or co-adaptability...

No, it says you can't use trademarks or PI to indicate compatibility, and says you can't use the creator's name to market or advertise. It never gives a blanket prohibition against indicating compatibility, nor a blanket prohibition against using the creator's name.

    Other Variant Player's Handbooks

Yes, but most of those are not meant as a drop-in replacement for the D&D3E PH--they aren't pseudo-generic high fantasy. Well, except maybe Lone Wolf (and the ones I previously mentioned). While Arcana Unearthed/Evolved, Blue Rose, and Everquest D20 all, arguably, produce roughly the same sort...

D&D possible cause in Murder case again.

And on the flip side, recently a guy somewhere near here killed his whole family and then himself. And he left a note saying [i paraphrase] "I did this because i needed to save my family, and bring us all closer to God." They couldn't find any money troubles, or family troubles, or criminal...

D&D possible cause in Murder case again.

Actually, a collection of knives or guns worries me a bit, but only once there's some other reason to get suspicious. And i think it more than a bit bizarre that, in our society, we get worried about someone with an enjoyment of imagination, but not about someone with an enjoyment of collecting...

    Dragon Magazine Collections

Well, assuming you mean the ones presented in The Ecology of the Aboleth, you're looking for Mar '88. (Up to a certain point, i had all the new monsters and ecology articles photocopied and inserted into my Monstrous Compendium binders, so they're pretty easy to find.)

For someone looking to branch out...

Well, you really need to give a few more hints as to what you're looking for. Do you want something relatively similar to D20 System? Something specifically different? Different or the same in what ways? With exactly zero information, i can only suggest some of my favorites: Over the Edge...

D&D Community Different Than the D20 Community?

It's about *creating* planes and cosmologies, much as The Primal Order is about creating gods/pantheons. It takes ~128pp to explore what the new MotP "covers" in a short chapter. And, as a result, does it with much greater depth and breadth. It's particularly the breadth that i like--it suggests...

What RPG books/manuals do you really regret buying?

Interested in parting with Riddle of Steel? It's on my "to buy" list, but i've realized it's not sufficiently important to me to pay full price, so i've been waiting to see a used copy--and haven't yet.

What do you mean by "worthwhile"? And what makes you think RPG books *have* 18-36mo of sales? Everything i've heard is that, except for core rulebooks, typical RPG sales are ~90% in the first 30 days, ~99% in the first 90 days. Most RPG books have essentially sold all they're ever going to well...

    Massive Open Content SRD

Isn't that likely to be in direct contradiction with your principle of getting the publisher's approval? Don't you think that it's precisely those with obtuse and/or crippled OGC declarations who would likely object to such a project and, given the opportunity, stop it? Don't you think that's...

    Massive Open Content SRD

Just a POV to toss out here: IMHO, getting the permission of an OGC producer to reuse the OGC is anathema to the whole point of open-content development. If someone doesn't want material to be reused, don't designate it OGC. Sadly, with the WotC OGL, getting permission to give proper credit *is*...

    D&D terminology pet peeves

Really? Do you really mean "aoo"? You guys say "I aoo the orc"? Or do you mean "aye-oh-oh"? Mind you, i rather like the idea of actually pronouncing "AoO", rather than spelling it out. Especially for berserker, werewolf, or wookie PCs, getting to scream "aooooo!" every time someone does...

Shouldn't be any question on that one. Unlike most of these terms, there's a very accessible audible (rather than written) example:
