    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

Okay. I made my Wisdom check, and giving up with further posts with you on this matter. Not going to try to wade through it with you. Still open to talking about other stuff, though, if it comes up. (And feel free to mention or tag me as an example of my views, if you want to; no offense will...

Not to be NEEDLESSLY snarky, but ARE we just going to CAP things now, since it's MORE convincing that way? In other words: /disagree Wow. I really, really disagree with your take on the 4e skill system. I don't think there's one designated way to calculate DC. I think there is some minor...

That isn't what I thought he was getting at before, either. And I really, really don't like limiting illusionism to rules-only interactions. There are many other things that the rules don't necessarily cover where I think illusionism shines best. I am curious what Manbearcat's thought on this...

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

First off, really good post. Worthy of XP. Second, I think I don't want "illusionism" in either case, in so much as I can avoid it. I think I'm probably more extreme than many others on this front, though. Third, great post. Worth repeating :)

Just as an example, the combats in my system have included much more dramatic fight scenes than I'd ever experienced in the other systems I've run (outside of maybe my 4-page superhero RPG), and it's precisely because of the rules and the narrative possibilities those rules open up. Things like...

You're going to have to speak to me like I'm twelve, or I'm not going to be able to respond to this as well as I'd like to.

That's *if* the players know that. If you tell them ahead of time, then yup, you're 100% right, no illusionism. If they don't know, and they're simply exploring, and you think "that way is boring, thus I'll just make it the other way," I'd consider that illusionism. Their "choice" didn't...

This is pretty much what I meant when I said that I might argue that pemerton engages in illusionism to some degree. As far as I can tell, he believes that it is his duty to frame challenges for the PCs, and thus it's basically okay to send them up against a set scenario regardless of their...

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

If I were to try to capture godlike powers in my system (which it only tries to do at the lowest of godlike levels of power), I would first sit down and think of what "godlike powers" include. Then I'd attempt to codify those powers, translating them into mechanics. Then I'd make play stick to...

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

I have no interest in running DW, since it's still very far from my preferred style for fantasy games. I only started running my 4e game because my then-roommates were both jealous that I was part of a gaming group, and the last game they had played was 4e, so they wanted me to start one up for...

Is it bad I kind of want this as a social chance for NPCs?

Yeah, YMMV and all that. I prep more than I did for 3.X (which I winged almost completely), but I don't think that's the typical experience. For prep-heavy GMs, 4e would definitely be easier the vast majority of the time, in my opinion.

Gen Con Takes Stand For Inclusiveness

Wow. I don't think any thread on EN World has ever made me want to block so many users. And that's saying something. There's a reason that politics should stay at CV and off ENW. Morrus, I think everyone is going around in circles. Better to close the thread after a fairly civil discussion than...

I do. It's not. ... the area being physically traveled through, where the PCs are attempting to gather food? If it's a swamp, then yes, it is. And completely. It applies to swamps, so unless this Shadowfell swamp is an entirely different terrain type (ie, not a swamp), it applies completely...

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

Right. Well, it's not completely in the hands of the players. But I want as much there as possible. So, as an example, my RPG uses Knowledge skills (like 3.X does). So if someone makes a Knowledge check to see if their character is aware of something (as compared to research, or the like), the...

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

I think if I wanted to do these things, I wouldn't run this skill challenge framed in the same terms you used, then ("find a secured shelter, safe from the elements and predators, where she can stow the children"). I've had the PCs run through various wilderness travel skill challenges before...

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

This is good. I still have the same feelings on illusionism and GMing with 4e skill challenges, but I like the way this is framed more (in that, this is more likely how I'd frame it myself for my players). This looks like good stuff to me, too :) To a degree (and I tend to write up failure...

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

Looks like a pretty standard skill challenge, yep. This is true. I think this is true for people that grok skill challenges. Okay. True. Well, mostly. The GM still has total control over the complications when failures present themselves. And say, for instance, we took your consequence for...

I'm going to have to take some time to look this over and digest it, but thanks for typing it all up for me. I'll get you some feedback on it at a more convenient point (I'm touching up my campaign map right now before preparing for work in an hour). XP given, though :)

I'm just going to quickly disagree that all setting designers do that. Because my setting (which only has a three currently living races, one of which is giants) design doesn't work that way.
