    D&D 5E (2014) I need advice on a Warlock build

    1) Neph as a Great Old One: Excellent choice! 2) I'm so used to using the Standard Array when creating a PC that it took me a moment when I read that you had not decided on a race yet; I thought those numbers included both the race and 4th-level ability bumps already. I idiot-slapped myself...

    Character niche for monks?

When I think "monk", I think "monastery". In terms of sustaining itself, a monastery will be able to provide some things by their own labor, but for other necessities will have to have some kind of economic relationship with the surrounding community, and will therefore need to provide...

    Character niche for monks?

Re-entering; the system removed all paragraph breaks when I tried to re-edit this.

    New Divine Domain: WRATH domain

Regarding Dark Portent's doom rolls, it seems to me that it would be more in keeping with the RAI to replace it with being able to impose disadvantage, instead. The sentence "You can replace any attack roll, saving throw, or ability check made by you or a creature that you can see with one of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Phandelver in Greyhawk

It's been a while since I played in the world of Greyhawk so I don't remember most of the place-names, but one area that came to mind would be the southern end of the range (hills? mountains?) between Hommlett and the Urnst region.

    Imperial Assault as pseudo-RPG

I think that taking a look at both the board game and the RPG from Fantasy Flight game to see if they would complement each other. Use the RPG for the interpersonal role-playing, and the board game to resolve the space battles. They might feed off each other in a useful fashion.

    Southlands Heroes for 5th Edition

5 out of 5 rating for Southlands Heroes for 5th Edition I like this quite a bit. It provides six new PC races (aasimar, gnoll, lizardfolk, minotaur, tosculi, and werelion) that are well developed. I have some reservations about the werelion; it may be overpowered, like a shifter on steroids...

D&D 4E Home Brew worlds: did you expand out from 4e's Nentir Vale map?

Thank you, Wik! This is exactly the kind of thing I was curious about. I feel that all of us who like shaping our own game worlds are, at least in that sense, kindred spirits, using bits of published material as seasoning to the churning stew of our imaginations. As to liking "your own...

Congratulations to the 2015 ENnies Award Winners!

I already love D&D 5e, but a big THANK YOU to the comments extolling the quality of Horror on the Orient Express and A Red and Pleasant Land for bringing those games to my attention. I'm going to have to check them out.

    Magic missile conversion question

You're right; that would be too much of a killer cantrip. As a spell, I still feel that its damage scales up too weakly at higher slot levels. Perhaps, instead of +1 added to the damage die roll at every slot level, add the slot level itself, i.e., when casting the spell using the 3rd-level...

D&D 4E Home Brew worlds: did you expand out from 4e's Nentir Vale map?

Thank you, SkidAce. I've already seen some of those maps; Mike Schley has a website that includes his adaptation of the RHoD map: http://mikeschley.zenfolio.com/p680849502/h410203A8#h410203a8

    Magic missile conversion question

Forked lightning, perhaps? Just house-rule the change in damage type. Magic Missile may be an iconic spell and useful enough at a low level, but IMO the damage just doesn't scale up well compared to other damaging spells. If you use Magic Missile with a 3rd-level slot, it will do 5d4 + 5 force...

D&D 4E Home Brew worlds: did you expand out from 4e's Nentir Vale map?

Here's some more information touching on the connection between my game world and some of the official published game world settings: Lesser Gods Let’s call this world Crossroads, as that was the function it performed for a few thousand years. The ambitions of a number of lesser gods led...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Preparation: Leaving Slots Open

I just want to say thank you to all the commentators on this thread. There's a lot of good food for thought here.

    D&D 5E (2014) Reclaiming Blingdenstone

Thank you, Sacrosanct. I downloaded 5 of these and they all look good. In addition, the different formats that you used have only increased my admiration for your creativity.

D&D 4E Home Brew worlds: did you expand out from 4e's Nentir Vale map?

To the other DMs out there who may have made Home Brew maps set in the world of the Nentir Vale, but set outside of the Vale itself, I address this question: What can you tell us about how you developed your version of that expanded world? WoTC described the world as one of darkness (somewhat...

    Blackguard

In the D&D context, I tend to think of evil as selfishness and self-centeredness. So, yes, evil can be used to defeat evil if there's any competition over a desired goal. Or even just out of spite.

    Less-than-Basic D&D: Races

For myself, the only occasion I'd use a raceless game would be give newbies a sense of how game-play works, probably with pre-gens. Part of my love of the game is specifically the different races; it's why games with only humans hold less attraction for me. After that, I'd have the players...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you ensure longevity and sustainability for 5th Edition?

Assuming you're referring to the current Forgotten Realms setting being joined by setting material (AP, sourcebooks, etc.) for the prior editions' settings of Dark Sun, Eberron, Greyhawk, Krynn, and perhaps generic-setting material, is there any particular order that you'd like to see the...
