    Kelemvor

Myrkul was evil. The Wall makes no thematic sense and is boring, but at least building it is in character for Myrkul. Kelemvor isn't supposed to be evil, but there he is makin' soul bricks.

    Kelemvor

Now I'm going to talk about great things in the Forgotten Realms. Rashemen is great. Seriously. Witches as a ruling class, a strangely effective monarch who leads in spite of the witches running around executing individual judicial power, berserkers, male spellcasters locked in caves making...

D&D 5E (2014) To fudge or not to fudge: that is the question

I fudged for the first time in years a couple of days ago. I'd been running the session (a Christmas two-shot) for an hour or so, and literally every monster had rolled natural 3 or lower for initiative. So I rerolled a couple, finally, and let the players know, because a fair number of monsters...

    Kelemvor

I'm in a bad mood. When I'm in a bad mood, I think about elements of setting design that annoy me. Today in annoying setting design elements: Kelemvor. I'm not against neutral death deities. Hades is a neutral death deity and he's awesome. The Raven Queen is a neutral death deity, and she's...

    Exclusive Adventures for DnDAL

WotC and AL have been great on inclusion. :)

D&D 5E (2014) Do LEVELS Have Concrete Meaning In Your Game?

The level of a spellcaster is obvious to other spellcasters the moment they cast their top-tier spells - spell levels are very much concrete things, and what each level of magic can do and how much skill it takes to get to them are things basically any trained spellcaster would know from...

    Exclusive Adventures for DnDAL

It'll start an argument if I do. The people who run said con are really, really both popular and polarizing among gamers. I'll PM.

    Exclusive Adventures for DnDAL

The "geographically/temporally close" thing will likely lock me out of epics forever, since the big local con for me that does all the epics is one that's run by people who, quite frankly, have made it clear that people like me aren't going to be made to feel safe or welcome there.

    Exclusive Adventures for DnDAL

Reducing exclusivity, honestly, is something I like in general, so seeing Fai Chen and special promos show up at the game stores where the vast bulk of actual AL play happens would just utterly delight me. The idea of Epics showing up at more conventions is also delightful - I'm aware that the...

Adventurers League, Home Play, and Public Play for Out of the Abyss characters

I feel a need to respond very specifically to this... well, sentence fragment. I know I'm quoting part of a sentence and a parenthetical, but please bear with me, because there's two details here I want to deal with. 1. "DM's sex life." No. Just no. Seriously. Is it talking about someone's "sex...

D&D 5E (2014) Flight ability: Does this make the Aarakocra overpowered?

I'd rather know early that I had a player who does things like this, instead of waiting for their human rogue to randomly switch sides during a major battle and announce how much being you sucks, so the tendency can be addreaaed when it's merely annoying and not campaign-destroying.

Adventurers League, Home Play, and Public Play for Out of the Abyss characters

Well, I'm back. Thanks, Skerritt, for pulling me back into a conversation where I thought I was don because I thought my point was made. I'm not going to wade into the "was my first post germane?" argument because that, quite frankly, is a distraction from every single topic in the thread. When...

For those who don't generally like to use Campaign Settings, what's your favorite one?

Among RPGs as a whole, I'd say In Nomine takes the cake for settings - it's brilliant. The game itself is a horrible mess of terribly assembled mechanics and terrible organization of the books, but the setting is great. Tribe8 is also quite interesting, and Anima piques my interest. For D&D...

D&D 5E (2014) Flight ability: Does this make the Aarakocra overpowered?

Yeah, in spite of loving the race, I've never been able to spell it well.

D&D 5E (2014) Flight ability: Does this make the Aarakocra overpowered?

Minimum forward speed was a logistical and tactical nightmare in older editions - seriously, just a huge pain.

D&D 5E (2014) Beyond the book: new ways to represent a wizard's spells known

Thankfully, you only need your spellbook when preparing spells or casting rituals.

Adventurers League, Home Play, and Public Play for Out of the Abyss characters

I'm not planning on talking much more about it. But the OP brought up two topics - he felt the game was being run improperly, and he was offended by some of the table talk. Since the only specific bit of table talk he brought up being offended by was finding out that someone else at the table...

D&D 5E (2014) Beyond the book: new ways to represent a wizard's spells known

I'll be playing in a two-worlds campaign soon (a setting where there's a split universe where one side is more classic D&D and the other is urban arcana-style modern). I expect someone will be using a smartphone as a spellbook.
