D&D 5E (2024) Are the new default alignments of Goblins (CN) and Kobolds (N) more consistent with their current portrayals?

I very strongly prefer that goblins and kobolds remain evil. Of course, I ALSO think that mindlessly pretend-slaughtering sentient creatures MERELY because one disagrees with their moral choices is something that should be discouraged.

D&D 5E (2024) Sunless Citadel Thoughs? Almost had a tpk.

Anyway, as to the OP: I've tried to DM sunless citadel a couple times. And also played through it a couple times. There are at least a couple decent fights - the wyrmling, for example. But...I don't know - it feels like there's a lot of... boringness at the beginning. Not exactly empty...

D&D 5E (2024) Sunless Citadel Thoughs? Almost had a tpk.

I've had a lot of tpks. Mostly homebrew stuff that I didn't properly vet against the players beforehand. Also mostly NOT 5e, but rather stuff like 3.5 or pathfinder. I did have one total party defeat once in 5e, but the enemies were trying to recover some stuff the party had taken, not kill...

    D&D 5E (2014) Us Building a "Fundamentally 5E" Setting From Scratch Together

I'm thinking this thread has MAYBE run its course. However, it's going to be a whole week before my next game session and I really love worldbuilding (which I'm sure is a great surprise to all), soo.. The Zyrficadian Empire is an expansionist, militaristic state that frequently attempts to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Us Building a "Fundamentally 5E" Setting From Scratch Together

There's some weirdness to it but yeah, Eberron is like that. Afaik canonically ONLY a member of House Cannith (the fabricators' guild) or someone with the Dragonmark of Making can build the lightning rail. But ONLY House Orien or someone with the Dragonmark of Passage is capable of driving...

    D&D 5E (2014) Us Building a "Fundamentally 5E" Setting From Scratch Together

The thing about Apocalypses is that life adapts and moves on, even if circumstances have changed. Is our own Earth in the real world (still) a post-apocalyptic setting if our atmosphere can no longer support giant insects, the super-continent of Pangaea has been broken into fragments, and/or...

    D&D 5E (2014) Us Building a "Fundamentally 5E" Setting From Scratch Together

Hmm. I'm having a hard time following the reasoning that seems to have lead you from the examples you gave to the conclusions you seem to have reached. Which were once again: More specifically of those items you referenced: 1) Seems to be a pretty good example of a Great Old One patron for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Us Building a "Fundamentally 5E" Setting From Scratch Together

Could you maybe provide examples? I'm not personally really seeing much that I feel couldn't be pretty easily adapted to such a setting. I suppose the idea about everyone knowing a little magic might necessitate some species alterations. I also get the sense that the setting implies smaller...

    D&D 5E (2014) Us Building a "Fundamentally 5E" Setting From Scratch Together

Yeah... it's nice to try and keep things inclusive and non-judgmental. But I think it's kind of necessary to be specific about the problems you're discussing in this case for the sake of clarity. I have a strong suspicion that we do not necessarily all view or conceptualize the fundamental...

    D&D 5E (2014) Us Building a "Fundamentally 5E" Setting From Scratch Together

I would expect so given Humans. But are there particular ideas you've seen that seem more egregiously NOT "fundamentally 5e"?

    D&D 5E (2014) Us Building a "Fundamentally 5E" Setting From Scratch Together

Since it doesn't sound like the full nature of existence has been worked out yet, we'll call this one a proposal or brainstorm: The Jaggerskern, also sometimes called the Grimsea or Sea of Possibilities, is an ocean in the northwesterly realms that surrounds and connects several different...

    D&D 5E (2014) Us Building a "Fundamentally 5E" Setting From Scratch Together

It wasn't actually my intent to imply any sort of timeline. The Shattering doesn't have to have occurred at all recently - more than enough time for the local residents to have disposed of the dead, sealed off dangerous places. Completely forget about things. Or for entire new ecosystems to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Us Building a "Fundamentally 5E" Setting From Scratch Together

Needless to say, the Shattering was a mass casualty event. Seas boiled, skies fell, cities became buried under mountains - as various planar energies washed into other realms and echoes on the Prime Material plane; boiling, exploding, warping as they came into contact with each other...

    D&D 5E (2014) Us Building a "Fundamentally 5E" Setting From Scratch Together

The Mother of Many Names is an ancient, alien, primordial deity that had a appendage in the creation of all life; but was thereafter bound and imprisoned beyond space and time by the rest of the deific powers. Though utterly incomprehensible to most mortals and usually appearing in a...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle Insight in your game?

The skill basically just reads relevant speech inflections and body language in my games. The player has to determine whether that means the subject is lying or not. Examples: "Despite the seemingly warm demeanor, his eyes seem cold." "She seems... fidgety" "He sounds legitimately passionate...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle monster knowledges in your game?

It's... unfortunately complicated. I presume that characters have some baseline level of knowledge about their world. And that individual classes / backgrounds / backstory elements provide some further body of general knowledge. So a commoner is probably aware that something particularly...

D&D 5E (2024) What is With Poison?, and Other PHB Conundrums.

DM - "Psyche! No, that particular two-armed bipedal creature over there is actually an aberration. Your turn is wasted, you should have chosen differently." PLAYER - "But...the spell worked just fine previously on these things! And you described this one as pretty much exactly the same as all...

    D&D 5E (2024) Fey Video Critique & Alternate Perspective

Waiting to see the actual execution. I like and have long liked the idea of goblinoids having a fey origin; which is in keeping with myth and faerie-tale fantasy origins. I am, however, STRONGLY against the idea of the rank-and-file goblinoid variations no longer counting as a humanoid...

    D&D 5E (2024) Just DMed my 1st session of 5.5. Healer's Kit!?!?!

Healer's Kit - A whole bunch of fancy-looking bandages, dressings, and herbal poultices that are all just for show. And one tiny bottle of fantasy laudanum to control pain and sedate the usual howling battlefield mania that arises when an adventurer gets a splinter or takes a tiny scratch...
