Half-orcs and why people think they are/aren't powerful

I think it's an excellent analysis. If I want to create a two-handed-weapon powerhouse fighter, I want the 18 Strength. +1 to hit and +2 damage (relative to 16 Str) is a huge deal at low-to-mid levels. And as CZ has pointed out, straight-up buying an 18 isn't too practical, even with generous...

    Monster books: No love?

I honestly figure that, especially with the ability to play around with templates and classes, I'm unlikely to go beyond the MM and the occasional beastie I find in a (non-monster-focussed) sourcebook or module.

Character Builds: Build me a combat rogue/sneak attack machine

How about just a straight Rog16? Five feats: Weapon Focus (Shortsword), Weapon Finesse (Shortsword), TWF, ITWF, Improved Initiative. Take Crippling Strike as one of your three Rogue special abilities (Slippery Mind and Improved Evasion are also nice abilties, but not so relevant to the Sneak...

Elvin thinblade: Cool racial weapon or Exploited Powergamer Ploy?

Just out of curiosity - why not? I don't know that I'd use it for a 'normal' campaign, but the whole 'functional equivalence' of different weapon types/styles kind of appeals to me...

    point buy

I prefer point buy (for many of the reasonss stated above) for a regular campaign. For a one-shot, rolling can be interesting, leading to stat configurations you would never have considered buying (I once had a Str 5, Con 4 Cleric...)

    Practiced Spellcaster feat

A lot of the 'anti-PS' posters do not seem to have considered the impact of metamagic use by a single-class caster. Compare a Rog4/Sor6 (just about to start ArT) with Practised Spellcaster as a 9th level Feat, with a Sor10 who takes Empower Spell instead. Each uses their highest level slot to...

    What is brittle/crystalline?

Interesting that there seems to be no consensus on what might be "brittle or crystalline" - might be worth e-mailing for an 'official' answer...

    What is brittle/crystalline?

I always thought of Great Shout (the 3.0E version, anyway) as a weapon-breaking spell with the side effect of also dealing some sonic damage to creatures....

Elvin thinblade: Cool racial weapon or Exploited Powergamer Ploy?

It's a reasonable weapon - takes a Feat to learn to use, and when you consider that Improved Critical would give a 1d8 longsword 17-20 rather than 18-20, it doesn't seem overpowered to me (lower requirements, less benefit.) Even stacking the two doesn't seem too bad to me - after all, by the...

    What is brittle/crystalline?

I was referring to the FRCS version of Great Shout. I can't remember if the Tome and Blood version stated 'crystalline/brittle' or was the same as the FRCS version. So - very little is affected (unless you were to cast it at Versailles :) )?

    What is brittle/crystalline?

The 3.5E Shout and Greater Shout spell descriptions mention brittle and crystalline material taking damage. What, exactly, is considered brittle or crystalline (have I missed a clarification somewhere in the Core rulebooks)? In the 3.0 FRCS the spell description mentions 'stone, crystal and...

    Heartwarder

I have to say I hadn't noticed that section about 'static fine art'... Having reread the section you mentioned, I agree. At least once a month, the church of Sune holds a Grand Revel... (FaP, p67) ;) Malin Genie

    D&D 3.x Beefing up the 3.5 Bard?

I definitely agree that the 3.0E system (or variant thereof) for Perform, where characters could get multiple instruments/modes without having to spend on several different skills, was better than the 'realistic' 3.5E version. Nevertheless, even now a 14 Int Bard could max out two types of...

    The new and improved assassin

Actually, at higher levels save-or-die is pretty much a staple of the system, although generally it's spellcasters or monsters. Why begrudge assassins? In response to the original post - I really like what you've done with the class! Particularly the paths. Although shouldn't evasion be...

    Heartwarder

I actually play a Heartwarder in a 3.0E PbP game, so I'm curious as to why you made the changes. Dodge and Mobility never really quite fit my idea of the Heartwarder, and I agree something was needed to substitute, but I don't remember Sune being a goddess of art (poetry and musical composition...

    D&D 3.x Beefing up the 3.5 Bard?

What exactly do you mean by 'beef up'? The roles of the Bard are (1) Information Provider, (2) Diplomat, (3) Support Fighter, Caster, Scout and Healer. (1) Access to Gather Information and all Knowledge skills, Bardic Knowledge ability, Greater/Scrying, Clairvoyance and Legend Lore spells (at...

Player Knowledge greater than DM knowledge syndrome

It isn't fair for the pplayer to dump this on you in the middle of a session. Done right, however (i.e. giving you some notes on who his character knows, and what he thinks he knows about them at the end of a session, giving you some time to prepare before the next one) it can be a great...

    Why no Clr/Rog PrC?

I have to say I've been impressed with the 3.5E FR material. I think a lot of the 'bad rap' for FRCS material came from 3.0E, where there were a few overpowered classes (anybody remember the old incarnations of the Incantatrix, or the Spelldancer?) and spells.

    Why no Clr/Rog PrC?

Right, I'm off to House Rules tomorrow to design the perfect Clr/Rog multiclass PrC ;) Thanks for everybody's thoughts and input; I feel like I've got a better idea of the range of views on why such a class may not have been put forward, and some of the potential pitfalls in designing one!

    Why no Clr/Rog PrC?

It's been generally agreed that the Divine Trickster as written is overpowered. This thread was originally put up to consider the idea of a Clr/Rog PrC in the abstract - one which would advance SA and have reasonable skills, also advance clerical spellcasting, but grant few or no other special...
