D&D 5E (2014) Should Hunter's mark (Ranger spell) drop Concentration requirement?

Actually... I was thinking about that as Foe Slayer certainly seems inadequate. Addressing it would be quite helpful. However, it's not only about level 20, though that's certainly where the disparity skyrockets. It's there long before that. And it's not solely about damage potential, it's...

Ah, Mentzer. Was there ever a more glorious cover art?

D&D 5E (2014) Should Hunter's mark (Ranger spell) drop Concentration requirement?

Sounds good to me. Still lower than what a fighter can achieve, but that's OK. Fighter should be the damage-dealing beast.

D&D 5E (2014) Wotc needs to clean up retail shelves

I don't know how these things operate in the US, but from my experience a publisher can have a great deal of control. If you have active and enterprising sales people.

D&D 5E (2014) Should Hunter's mark (Ranger spell) drop Concentration requirement?

Let's get this out of the way. I've been nothing but respectful in each and every post in this thread and on the boards at large. So why this veiled aggression? Okay, let's continue. Let's see... Ranger. Two attacks per round. Attack 1: d8(4.5) (weapon) + d8(4.5) (colossus slayer) + d6(3.5)...

D&D 5E (2014) Should Hunter's mark (Ranger spell) drop Concentration requirement?

Yes, I mean spells like Hunter's Mark and Swift Quiver. He gets only 2 of the latter per day at 20th level. I'm the first to admit that my math prowess is laughable, but how did you come by those numbers? Using Colossus Slayer and Hunter's Mark a ranger does around 150 damage over 5 rounds not...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Multiverse is back....

Man, all of this reminds me how much I want, nay, NEED, a new campaign world for D&D. After settings galore that was 2E, we got the grand total of one ever since, and that was 10 years ago.

D&D 5E (2014) Should Hunter's mark (Ranger spell) drop Concentration requirement?

I dislike that Hunter's Mark is a spell at all; it seems like a pretty core feature for the class after all. Maybe de-spell it and make it a martial feature, no concentration required, available for, let's say, Wis modifier times per day or some such.

D&D 5E (2014) Should Hunter's mark (Ranger spell) drop Concentration requirement?

I get what you're saying and I agree, but I had to limit this thread in some way: a consideration of Hunter's Mark seemed interesting to me. But yes, I think that ranger as a whole seems mechanically dubious. His core features are very bland and uninspiring, not to mention supremely situational...

D&D 5E (2014) Should Hunter's mark (Ranger spell) drop Concentration requirement?

Fair enough. But those things cut both ways. Maybe the fighter doesn't expend all his SD nor uses his AS, but then neither does the ranger use his best limited-use features. We're again down to fighter dishing out over 200 damage with his attacks only (it's only going up, he'll probably use at...

D&D 5E (2014) Should Hunter's mark (Ranger spell) drop Concentration requirement?

"Inspired" by all the ranger-bashing going on, I've been doing some tedious number-crunching to see how an archer ranger (hunter)--an iconic character concept as at least some of you will hopefully agree--compares to archer fighter (battlemaster). I'm no mathematician so take these with a grain...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Multiverse is back....

To be honest, Hussar has a point. When talking about Prime Material plane, the place most adventures take place in, core books don't assume much at all, except that it's your standard medieval fantasy world, and even that isn't cast in stone as various "bolder" settings show. They don't tell you...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Item Costs in 5E

That's something I've always liked. I truly hate the "magic items are so mundane you can buy them in your friendly supermarket, and if you call now you'll even get a set of +1 steak knives for free" philosophy. Granted, that's just my subjective play preference and not a truism. I'm not...

D&D 5E (2014) MM Firesnake up on Christopher Burdett's Blog

What choice? Fire snakes? Somehow I doubt a fire snake entry in a fantasy bestiary is going to result in negative reception. And as several people already pointed out, there's a difference between "baby" and a dangerous if young monster that is fully capable of independent action. Unless...

D&D 5E (2014) If the art in the PHB and MM is any indication...

I find the art generally to my liking, definitely more so than the dungeonpunk of the previous editions. The art is more "realistic", I notice an increased emphasis on the scene and environment rather than on isolated cool character(s) in mid-flight doing cool stuff while things/apparel swirl in...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Multiverse is back....

It's worth pointing out that one of the design goals of 5E core rulebooks, as stated by Mearls (I think it was him), is to make them enjoyable to read even if you have no intention to play. A lot of people buy books and never even use them. Beautiful bestiaries full of fluff are much more...
