Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

Not completely. Rolemaster had something similar but it also had action based ex awards. Heck the original one give ep for simply traveling. More unfamiliar the terrain the more ep.

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

RC, is that what he was tying to do? He only confused and bored me. I skipped any thing that was not a clear rule because of his tendency to use pose in stead of the more established and for me any technical approach. I had the same problem with him as I do with you. We seem to think and...

What precentage to they make up of your Campaign?

I have to admit while I voted less then 10%, I have come across something that I will be using more often. WotC's Steal this Hook. I not sure I will use any thing but the concepts. The opening paragraphs need work to fit my campaign.

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

So define a full game in D&D. Is it when the campaign is over, or are you talking about when the module/adventure is done? Are you saying that the players should not expect any treasure before the end of a module/adventure? I don't understand how this works with 1e. I DM 1e for 10 years...

Do you run or play in a Sandbox or Linear game

Yes, and it would radically change the game. If something happened in a high fantasy game to change your group led by a Paladin and Cleric to become evil or decide to help the big bad that is differently a different game as far as setting rules and approach. Every plot encounter would have to...

Simpler Treasure System with (mostly) Random Loot

I am starting a new campaign with 6 out of 8 players having no recent RPG experence. Of those 6 the best most recent was over 10 years ago and maybe for a summer. A wish list is not going to work. I am also going for extra instead of higher. Thanks for working all of this out.

Do you run or play in a Sandbox or Linear game

This is what I meant. Thanks Hussar. Rules, settings, DM actions, and player reactions all contribute to one extreme or the other. This is on reason it is impossible to run a PURE sand box or railroad game. You can get close if you work at it and the DM has the most power but other influences...

    Making Maps

I own Campaign Cartographer 3 (CC3). There is a very good tutorial on U-tube on how to use the tools and there are dozens of examples. They have a excellent forum that is very helpful. Heck just trying to get you a nice link led me to a thread on city design. Here is the ProFantasy Community...

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

Do really play this way? Can the PC with any warning stumble into a lair of a monster or NPC that so powerful that even if they run they are dead? You sound alot more experenced than that. Or we miss communicating? See my remakes below to my approach to things. I don't know where he got...

    The Chump to God model

I like both a other approaches to. I used to play. Child to Veteran Adult by simply making the average no count NPC 5th level. Simple and since most of campaigns stopped at 10 it worked nicely. 0 levels where kids under 14. I think I can do the same for most levels systems if needed, but...

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

This is one of the best written post in this tread. I was a clerk/typist at the time so I know what you mean. While there where ways they required a lot of time, expense and training that TSR either did not have or most likely could not afford. I this this part of the quote is the most...

Do you run or play in a Sandbox or Linear game

Then you have a new setting. It is the same as if a Paladin led party in a save the world game changed sides. You have to reset the entire campaign. I not saying that is can't happen but if they want to stay in character and run a special campaign then there is a narrow structure on how it...

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

You took to far. Note: I said with the same level of wealth. I you have a long sword and I can afford the same or its equivalent for my class. (i.e. what ever my class can use) the we should have the same (equal) affect on a combat that our party is in. If I am a wizard then I should be able...

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

From my prespective we are talking about to types. In very loose terms they are: Level balance and Campaign balance. Level balance it where each character is suppose to be balance with every other character at the same level with the same wealth. 3.x tried this and came close at first. 4e...

Do you run or play in a Sandbox or Linear game

You must have missed my next post, where I stated that the missions could have some sand boxing to them. Here is another thing to consider: Does having a rigid frame work mean railroading or prevent sandbox play? See the above quote for an example of sand box in a rigid frame work.

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

For most of the people I played with - Yes. I would be surprised that it did not need some. Even RC has said the it left balance up to the DM. If that is the case then the DM need to make house rules to get that balance.

Do you run or play in a Sandbox or Linear game

Agree, Prime Directive was more of the SP ops unit type. The missions them selves can be a often are very sand box. HQ does not normally tell a Special Ops unit how to do their job once they are in the field. Now I said the structure was very rigid if we took the same people/characters and...

Do you run or play in a Sandbox or Linear game

Your examples don't match mine. Per the setting the PC are given missions, equipment and objectives chosen by the Ship commander (GM) for each adventure. There is a diffident start and stop for each mission. There are set goals and resources. Even the area is predefined. This is the expected...

Do you run or play in a Sandbox or Linear game

Heck some settings work best with a rigid sturcture. One of my wife's favorite games is called Prime Directive. You have to rail road your players from one adventure to another. After all they are military personnel. (Star Trek - Starfleet special op types for landing parties.) Even the...

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

Just to put a different spin on things. My experience is again different from both of the above. For all of the editions I have played, the only games that did not become train wrecks where the house rules where keep to the minimum to be playable. More for 1e than 2e which had more the 3.x...
