D&D 4E Throwing ideas, seeing what sticks (and what stinks)

Amusingly, I just this autumn created a strategy card game based on Magic, and ended up splitting the traditional deck into two: the Library (spell cards) and the Journal (lands)! Not much else to say, other than that I heartily approve of any idea that combines cards and D&D. :)

What's is your favorite D20/D10 RPG and why ?

4e here too -- it's a very well-planned, well-executed, and well-played game. 3.x D&D is a close runner up; it has very compelling concepts, but due to the D&D legacy its execution is rather misguided. So sadly, it doesn't live up to the potential I see in it.

    Need an alternative to D&D.

Honestly, it sounds like you just bought the wrong edition of D&D. Which sucks for your wallet, but it does give you a simple solution: Play 4e instead. 4e is very well balanced, you can run an entire campaign of once-per-day encounters without breaking it*, and it's perfect for big dramatic...

D&D 3.x Issues that might arise from a "core book only" 3.5 campaign and possible fixes?

It's in the Complete Divine, and it became an auto-include variant in my campaigns as soon as I discovered it. I would also ask my DMs to allow me to use it whenever I played a cleric. Even aside from balance issues, d20-izing Turn Undead is a vast improvement in my book, especially when new...

    D&D 5E (2014) What will 5E D&D be remembered for?

Yeah, I can see how 4e's various DMing guidelines, as well as similar ones in 3.x, might become stressful for DMs who get wrapped up in the guidelines=rules mentality. Likewise if a DM has players who have strong opinions about how closely the guidelines ought to be followed -- though players...

    D&D 5E (2014) What will 5E D&D be remembered for?

I agree with those who have commented that trying to predict what an edition will be remembered for two years in is kinda tea-reading. But from the perspective of an outsider looking in, it looks like 'the compromise/inoffensive edition' is a distinct possibility. Possibly also the...

    D&D 4E [4e] Paladin (feat) advice needed

FWIW, as a player, I'd be strongly tempted to narrate every single one of my boons as a skill or inherent trait. Or ask my GM to give them to me in that form. Even if my GM promises never to take away my stuff, there may be situations where non-takeawayable boons are advantageous. "Hey hey hey...

Planescape: How do you tell a petitioner from a planar?

Well you could always go the 'Petitioners have a particular light in their eyes' route, with a nod and a wink to your players. ;)

What to do when one PC is *far* weaker than rest of party

When I DMed 2e, I was young and naive, and I pretty much exulted in the insanity. When I DMed 3.0 and then 3.5, I used a combination of friendly advice and a mountain of house rules to keep things more or less on an even keel. Now when I DM, it's always 4e, so this is all a non-issue for the...

Planescape: How do you tell a petitioner from a planar?

Not that I know of, but I haven't read all the PS supplements. I suspect that the authors would tell you that some normal-looking petitioners may have telltale quirks -- like Outlands petitioners who walk around with balance tally-books -- that will clue savvy planewalkers in to their nature...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you keep your players going from "goblins to gods" in your games?

1: 2: 3: Boost goblin stats, by simple fiat or by adding levels. 4: Play a game designed to keep within a narrow power range. 5: Secret cow level.

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic item attunement, like-dislike?

Whoa, yeah! I had just assumed that every permanent item requires attunement before reading this post. It does make sense though. For all the 5e talk of story before rules and gear not being necessary, I'd be surprised indeed if the devs didn't consider certain staple/mathy items as a...

Water, water everywhere, Nor any drop to drink

I'm frankly amazed that fans have been arguing over a hypothetical/fan-made class for 48 pages now, in a forum special-made to contain a sea of similar arguments. I guess I shouldn't be though. Now that it looks like non-LG paladins are here to stay, the D&D culture warriors need some new...

D&D 5E (2014) House Rules that Span Editions

May I ask why you don't like divine classes? And also, do you transfer their healing spells to other spell lists in non-4e games? Are we talking 'good rp = mechanically gimped' defective, or 'I'm a loner/coward/antihero/villain, why would I go on this adventure?' defective?

Where do neutral characters go when they die?

In FR, what sort of character doesn't pick some patron god, if only to avoid the WotF? What sort of loon actively denies the gods' very existence, what with them romping about Faerun every decade or so? I'm curious, both about the OP's player's character, and about others.

D&D 5E (2014) I'm Not Sure We Need a Warlord - Please put down that rotten egg.

For someone who claims interest in a 5e warlord, you don't seem interested in anything but naysaying. Fourteen pages here, two threads of your own, and who knows how much more text dedicated to essentially 'nuh uh, can't be done.' It's almost as if you're more interested in getting a rise out of...

Why do you hate meta-gaming? (And what does it mean to you?)

Hm, I'm on board with steenan here. I agree with his definition and overall conclusions. Metagaming can be good or bad, depending on the situation and the preferences of those involved. I guess my kneejerk reaction to the word 'metagaming' is 'temptation!' because when it's good (or not bad)...

    1000 Relatable Villain Motivations

An antisocial psychopath is raised with a strict code of conduct, resulting in him murdering only heinous villains who evade the law. A law-enforcer discovers his activities, and hires the party on as bounty hunters to catch him. After catching the psychopath, he somehow demonstrates to the...

Why do you hate meta-gaming? (And what does it mean to you?)

I go by the second definition: Metagaming is the in-game use of knowledge that one's character does not have. Most players are willing and able to separate themselves from their characters to some degree, but it's naive to think that anyone is totally immune to the temptation to metagame when...
