D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

I was just going by what was posted. At higher levels I'd actually be surprised if true strike was the best option for a bard in most fights. Maybe I'm missing something, wouldn't be the first time. Or the last.

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

I just edited to correct my post. True Strike takes an action and grants a single attack, not an attack action. True Strike Casting time 1 action Guided by a flash of magical insight, you make one attack with the weapon used in the spell’s casting. The attack uses your spellcasting ability...

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

So I was trying to figure out the bard, and I agree I just can't get it to work. They have 2 attacks per round but True Strike is an action (they do get a bonus action attack from battle magic). Vicious weapons don't add any bonus to attack, just the extra 2d6. So for two attacks with a...

Trickster rogue level 9 ability "Magical Ambush". It hasn't changed from 2014.

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

Good points, one comment... I would also note that "If the creature ends its turn in a space where it doesn’t have line of sight to you, the creature makes a Wisdom saving throw. On a successful save, the spell ends on that creature." Which is why I was asking if the ones that were frightened...

D&D 5E (2024) Paul Hughes's Analysis of D&D 2024 Monster Manual monsters on Blog of Holding

All I ever really used the old one for was a general guideline anyway so this is fine. I'm generally taking an existing monster and adjusting CR or look to monsters at the CR I'm looking for inspiration for special abilities and features anyway. More detailed rules would be nice but are not...

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

We like the new rules. Fighters have some new options which make the fights a bit more dynamic and I also like the new monsters. There are a handful of cases where I'm still going to use the old rules (e.g. stealth) but other than that it's been fun.

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

Magic weapons have no effect on resistance or immunity in the 2024 MM. A black pudding is immune to slashing damage whether or not you're hitting it with a magic sword.

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

I don't use modules but I am constantly keeping an eye on difficulty I expect compared to actual play experience. I then adjust, making the encounters more or less difficult to provide a balance that works for the group. So if I found that the group was steamrolling every encounter, after the...

Good reminder to be careful to read the new rules. I ran into the same issue with the Sleep spell a while back.

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

Personally I think the "expected" magic items table in the DMG is overkill, but they also don't distinguish between permanent and consumable items. Also a bit annoying that they give a chart for expected number of items without stating (as far as I know) the number of people in their default...

Compatible doesn't mean perfectly balanced for every group. Besides, since I don't use modules I don't really care. What I do know is that the couple of games I've run now with the new MM I've had to lower XP budget a bit. Not doing high level yet but high level monsters seem significantly tougher.

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

They're using old modules that presumably used the old XP budgets while using old monsters. They aren't using the new rules. The DM should still be making adjustments to improve the balance because no module could possibly be correctly balanced for every conceivable group. I'm getting tired...

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

I agree that there can be issues with mods, there's a lot of reasons I don't use them. Lack of advice on how to adjust encounter difficulty is just one. On the other hand if I'm DMing I'm still ultimately responsible and I'm not going to blame issues on the module or the rules. At least not...

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

So then they've always had combats that last a round or two? Then why does the version of the rules matter? But again ... if a DM were defeating the PCs in a round or two every single combat would you not say that the encounter as designed were the issue?

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

Why is it WotC's fault? Seriously. We have DMs for a reason. Some groups are not going to have an issue with the PCs glowing like Christmas trees but figure out how to adjust encounters to compensate, others are going to want to severely limit magic (crafted or not), others are going to find...

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

One random example where the group where the majority of combats are over in one round and never longer than two is not indicative of any sort of issue. IMHO it's indicative of a DM who is not compensating for the power level of the group. An occasional fight that's not as difficult as...

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

I'm allowing crafting but I've also decided that you need instructions and potentially rare items in order to craft anything more powerful than common. I also don't hand out that much gold in the first place, they end up spending most of it on potions and scrolls for healing.
