D&D General If we were re-designing the Tiny Hut-esc 'instant shelter' spells what would we change?

So the spell says it's a hemisphere. I envisioned it as a sphere sliced in half, so it doesn't have a floor. But Jeremy Crawford, in a tweet, said "oh no, it does have a floor", which was brought up to me when I tried to have some incorporeal undead come up from the ground. As it was an...

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

I'm not trying to spread disinformation, I may be wrong about things, especially since it's been over a decade since we played FC. My memory was that of a player trying to get to the top level of a feat tree and him declaring that "as long as I do stress damage, I can do x, y, and z, and it's...

I'm confused how Rope Trick somehow coexists with Catnap, a higher level spell with a single target that gives you a short rest in 10 minutes as opposed to just using one action to cast Rope Trick, lol.

The problem is FC really rewards you for overspecializing in a particular weapon type with it's feat chains (even more so than in 3.x, so that's saying something!). So you can end up with a rapier user specializing in stress damage to whom switching a weapon out is like cutting off their arm...

Out of curiosity, what does Level Up say about helmets?

No idea. I mean, cynical me says, no, probably not, if it's all downside. Not that I'm sure there's much of an upside, beyond "verisimilitude" (which is important to some). I tried to model gear damage in an abstract fashion, where you could earn Strife levels if you lacked resources, which...

This is true, one of the better parts of that system. The different types of damage, not so much. After witnessing a group trying to take down an enemy where one guy was doing stress damage, another doing...subdual damage? And the third doing normal damage, which resulted in taking three...

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

The threads talking about studded leather grips for polearms mentioned a couple things that got me thinking. Of the (many) things D&D abstracts, it's the durability of gear and any actions or costs needed to maintain it. Oh sure, the rules talk about what it takes to outright destroy...

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

I think you'll find AD&D (1e and 2e) were the first to introduce a lot of inaccurately described weapons that strained the concepts of game balance. Oriental Adventures for example, gives us everyone's "favorite" weapon, the Katana: The Complete Fighter's Handbook brought back the Katana and...

While 3e messed up exotic weapons, by having both "weird, unusual weapons" and "better than Martial weapons" co-existing in the same category, there were some great ones. The original Fullblade, which did 2d8 damage but required 17 Strength to wield as a Medium character (basically a Large...

You'd have to introduce more weapon properties most likely, which is what Pathfinder 1e did.

This looks pretty good. There's an armor from Kobold Press I allow that I'd slot onto here, Brigandine, AC 13+Dex light armor that has disadvantage on Stealth. (I also allow a hands-free shield, the Manica, that provides +1 AC, similar to your Buckler). As for what I exchanged it for, I went...

The same goes for armor, in my opinion. There's a flowchart for that as well, and it basically boils down to "there are four suits of armor worth wearing, three if you don't care about Stealth". In a recent adventure I was running, there was a Chain Shirt +1 in treasure, and I felt obligated...

I'd be happy to help, unfortunately my game is on hiatus at the moment, and even when we get back to it, dropping custom weapons on the game probably won't help much- the party consists of a ranged Cleric, a spellcasting Druid, a ranged Fighter (sometimes), and a Sorcerer/Warlock who has a magic...

I can appreciate your stance, but I'm pretty sure both game designers and DM's will continue to make whatever sorts of NPC's they feel are interesting and not really worry too much about whether or not players can access similar unique feats. After all, they've been doing it for decades, why...

It's funny you say that, as his stat block in Hall of Heroes states: I use this particular character as an example, and he's one of several- I'm not saying I like Drizzt as a character (he was ok in Crystal Shard, but quickly became D&D's version of the Chuck Norris meme, lol). For example...
