    Why Is the Cleric Unfun?

EXACTLY!!!! That's the point. A few sorcerers might take the spell, the wizards won't. But who cares? The idea is to get the spell on the spell list so sorcerers and wizards can use arcane wands of cure light/moderate/serious wounds and other cure spells. During combat the cleric still...

    Why Is the Cleric Unfun?

A nice, succinct way to put it. I agree. Sure, there are many people who like playing healers, but the game is set up so that you pretty much have to have one of those people in your group. Not every group is like that. Healing in-between combats should be available to more classes...

    That's how I feel, too.

    Magic Items with penalties

I know there is a 10% discount for skill use and a 30% discount for alignments. But what about other penalties? For the sake of discussion, start with this item, slightly edited How do we make I'm going back and forth. On the one hand in the hands of a crafty player, this penalty isn't...

    Was 3rd edition fundamentaly flawed?

Its not that it is fundamentally flawed, so much as the tools that it brought to the game were not intuitive to use, CR being the perfect example.

    Adapt or Perish!

I agree. Incantations are the sleeper hit mechanic of 3e. Allow the PC to use the incantation for 10% of the XP cost (or 0 xp cost!) if they take a feat for it that is specific to each incantation. So you'd need three feats for three incantations to be cast at reduced XP cost. Now only...

Full circle: D&D now being based on video games...

Exactly. Back in the day, we had these wandering monster tables. You could have a cave of hobgoblins and all of the sudden a green slime would come bubbling down the corridor. No story, no roleplay, just an attack. MMOs and CRPGs have plenty of these kinds of things, monsters standing around...

    soundtracks

Here's a link to the Planescape Torment soundtrack http://www.planescape-torment.org/?page=soundtrack You can play the tracks as needed. The only one I don't think is well suited to a game is Dak'kon's theme because of that weird "ping" in the middle of the track.

And another reason I hate the term "fluff" . . .

This is a point in the term's favor as far as I'm concerned. "Hello, Mr Game Designer! What have you written lately?" "I wrote 40 pages of setting text for Eberron!" "Oh! So you're a fluffer now?" Yeah. This term needs to stay.

D&D 5E (2014) Who Will be The Next Monte...

I would add 3) Being nice and polite to the online D&D community even when they acted like morons. I should know. I acted like a moron and Monte Cook was nice and polite to me. Several times. Anyway... I'm betting Monte Cook is going to be the Monte Cook of 4e. I'm betting he's going to...

    Email on RPG Superstar

I got an idea and started sketching it out before double checking the rules. Whoops! They want a wondrous item, not a weapon. I decided to keep going, just for the practice. I used the Aztecs for inspiration. Its probably slightly underpowered given its creation cost, but a coup de grace...

    How to get into publishing

Post a couple of things to the WotC forums. Maybe a prestige class or monster or something. Make sure you have a handle on style and format. And make sure you have a nice thick skin for criticism. Check out some publisher forums to see what people are looking for. Don't discount WotC...

    New modern game

When I run d20M I say that it takes place in "alternate Earth". Very, very similar to our own world but some of the details ... like all the ones that can turn your game into a political yelling fiasco ... are changed. Don't make a hard list. Just make it clear to your players that you want...

    Magic Construction Projects

True, but magically created materials could be used for civilian applications to ease the burden of government & military construction. You could also do things like create one simple shelter out of wall of stone every 10 miles along your kingdom's roads for travelers (of course that might have...

Why is the WoW influence a bad thing?

Game design around per-encounter rather than per-day is, I think, totally awesome. But some folks feel that just isn't D&D. But I think what happens is that people hear "draws inspiration from MMORPGs" and think "Oh no! They're giving in to all the morons, internet trolls, and kidz thet kant...

Wizards: Bard to no longer suck

If you want a light/fast/DEX melee combatant then those are options that should be available to the fighter. Fighter does not have to equate with "guy in plate mail" though I'll grant you that's the way its been since 1e. And 3e bards don't suck. Adventures without skill checks suck. Anyway...
