How often do you enforce laws in your games?

Like @Umbran my players, for quite a while now, have been playing white hats. They're typically motivated to better the environment around them and understand that their actions have consequences. So they don't murder, steal, burn down inns and orphanages. The last time taxes came up for me...

    Adventure Path Participation?

DM: Shackled City - I consider this the best campaign I've ever run. I used the hardcover and it took about two years to run from start to finish. We did skip the last chapter, Asylum, because I did not think it felt well with the story. I gave the players the option to play it and they declined...

D&D 5E (2014) My Party Wrecks the Underdark

-A city that long ago collapsed and sank under the earth from some great calamity. What caused it to sink underground? What riches are there for the taking? What now calls the city home? -The Dwarven Artifact Reclamation Program has a lead on the lost tomb of a forgotten sage. A team was...

Pathfinder 1E What is your go-to backup weapon?

Always carry a dagger. It's a decent back up weapon and you can use it to cut your way out of that ambush/grapple/swallow whole monster. Assuming you survived that long. Plus, you can put a knife almost anywhere. On your belt, in your boot, etc.

    You can't win this encounter

In my experience, most GMs recognize that you got screwed by the dice. Having any sort of plan to deal with it results in them letting you succeed.

Paizo Any good High Level Adventure Paths, starting at lvl 10?

Have you looked at the Pathfinder Society scenarios? Most (all?) of them have adjustments for different tiers of play. For instance, if the party is level 3 they encounter X, if they're level 6 they encounter 2x+y. I've been using them to fill in some gaps for a campaign set in Falcon's Hollow...

What is the point of GM's notes?

My notes typically consist of the following: Dungeon related stuff. What's in this room? How big is it? Traps? Monsters? Will they fight to the death or flee? Oh look, shinies! NPC stuff. Who is this guy; what's he got to say? Maybe it's a big long speech I've tried to write out before hand...

    You can't win this encounter

I once started a campaign that had a goblin army attack the PCs home town. The PCs and the town militia fought the goblins but fell back from the town wall and gate into the town. As the rest of the citizens fled for their lives, the PCs got ready to make a stand against the goblins in the town...

    You can't win this encounter

Something that I've been seeing a lot lately is that the party should be faced with encounters that they cannot win. That they should run. My question to you is how do you convey this information to the party without being ham-fisted about it? Now there are the obvious clues like the dragon...

    Encumbrance

I have always taken a bit of a handwaving approach on things like this. As long as what you have on your sheet is more or less reasonable, I don't care too much. I'm more interested in how you're feeding yourself than how many arrows you have. I think I have been very lucky that I have had...

    Pathfinder 1E Over-Optimized

Having had to GM for groups where I had one player that was over optimized compared to the rest of the group, I totally agree with @Fauchard1520 I ran into the problem where if I tried to make an encounter challenging for one player it would completely stomp the rest of the party. If I tried to...

D&D 5E (2014) Do You Prefer Sandbox or Party Level Areas In Your Game World?

Nothing like joining the discussion late. I prefer the Party Method @Morrus described, so long as it makes sense. If I walk outside of a town and am immediately surrounded by a bubble of 12th level encounters, it yanks me out of the game. How do the farmers survive? You described farmlands...

    D&D 5E (2014) Players railroading dungeonmasters

Might as well throw my 2 cp in as well. Do backstories railroad the GM? Eh ... no, not in my experience. Can they help me try and make the adventures more relevant to your character? Yes, absolutely. One of the best pieces of advice I'd ever gotten as a GM was to ask my players what their...

    Where's Mom?

I've been running a game set in a small town that is run by a lumber company. The lumber company is pretty despicable and is the true power in the town. The head of the lumber company has a son that is an alright kid despite his father. Now my players have started asking, "Where's mom?" Through...

Pathfinder 1E Ooze vs Crippling Strike

I think the relevant text is in Crippling Strike: Since an ooze cannot take additional damage from precision-based attacks, I would say that Crippling Strike is negated. If I were to picture it in my mind, crippling strike lets you hit an important muscle or tendon. But an ooze is just ...

What are you running right now?

Everything is being played/run via roll20: Running a Pathfinder game set in Falcon's Hollow. Started with Hollow's Last Hope and it's expanded a little bit to try and tie some other paizo modules together into a mini campaign. Playing a D&D 5E game where we're trying to save the world from a...

D&D General What editions of Dungeons & Dragons do you like?

3.5 - Played and DM'd PF 1E - DM'd 5E - Played All have things I like and dislike. If I had to choose a favorite it would be pathfinder.

    A Growing Appreciation of Modules

I have noticed something about my gaming habits over the last few years. I've come to appreciate modules more and more. Perhaps it's because when I first started to play D&D my DMs wrote everything themselves. And that's what I learned to do. And so, I turned my nose up at those pre-written...

Why is my NPC Wizard cursed with immortality?

I had a pair of immortal NPCs in a campaign once due to a poor choice of words. Fighter: It looks like we'll die here Dungeon collapses around them Wizard: I wish we didn't have to. ... WAIT! NO! They had an on again off again relationship in the background; mostly sticking together because...

D&D 5E (2014) How often do characters die in your campaigns?

I don't go out of my way to kill characters. I want you to feel challenged and threatened by the obstacles put forth but, I won't place you in a scenario where "Well, you should have known to run" is my answer. However, I cannot save you from yourself. If you decide to run off down the dungeon...
