D&D 5E (2014) Spells That Still Need to be Fixed (September Packet)

You're welcome, and thank you. :) That's an interesting idea, but wouldn't that make fighter/mages better at cantrips than single class mages? I agree that spellcasters are a bit too single-ability dependent at the moment. The only problem I'm seeing with your suggestion is that there are no...

D&D 5E (2014) Spells That Still Need to be Fixed (September Packet)

Apology accepted. I see your point, but I don't agree that the game is going to be "stuck" with anything. The whole point of the playtest is to tell them what we like and what we don't. The developers already changed their minds on a lot of things based on feedback. Some of those changes I've...

D&D 5E (2014) Spells That Still Need to be Fixed (September Packet)

Not true. Some undead are evil, not all are. Even in the older, Gygaxian editions of the game, skeletons and zombies were neutral, not evil. Here you go again with your "we've talked about this before, so how dare you not come over to my point of view already" nonsense. The overwhelming...

D&D 5E (2014) Spells That Still Need to be Fixed (September Packet)

I added Sleep to the list. I'm not sure how I managed to forget about that one!

D&D 5E (2014) The Monk - What is the monk to you and why?

I consider "monks" to be martial artists, warriors who focus on unarmed combat and exotic weapons. I would prefer for "monk" to be a background, and for the class to be called the martial artist. It is, after all, possible to be a monk that isn't a martial artist, or vice versa. A western monk...

    Legends & Lore: Clas Groups

They could do both. A magic staff, for example, could be "usable only by mages" or "usable by anyone with proficiency with staves as an implement," depending on what they want to do.

    Legends & Lore: Clas Groups

I'm very glad to hear this. That addresses pretty much all of the concerns I had with this idea. As long as the class groups are just labels and don't shoe-horn class design, I have no objections.

    Legends & Lore: Clas Groups

This is why I think "Monk" should be a background and the class should be called the "Martial Artist." Not all martial artists are monks, nor are all monks martial artists.

    Legends & Lore: Clas Groups

I'm very relived that they aren't trying to fit every type of arcane magic user into the wizard class anymore. I like the new approach. It reminds me a lot of 2e.

    D&D 5E (2014) Power/Spell scaling seems off

Two-Weapon Fighting would be really overpowered if it doubled your extra attacks as well. Yeah, this one needs to be revised. Fighters not only get more expertise dice as they go up in level, they also get more attacks to use them with. Trust me, fighters are fine. If anything, they're...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Item Gold Piece Prices

I just noticed that they changed the gp value for magic items in the new playtest packet. I wonder why they did this. I really liked the older "less is more" approach to the value of gold and magic items.

D&D 5E (2014) What spells are not Scalable and should be?

Here are some other spells I think should scale with higher level slots: Chain Lightning: could add additional secondary targets or more damage. Find Familiar: could give you more familiar options with higher level slots, much like the old improved familiar feat. Things like imps and...

D&D 5E (2014) What spells are not Scalable and should be?

I believe the OP was talking about spells scaling with higher level spell slots, not caster level as in past editions.

    D&D 5E (2014) Ability Score Improvement / Feats: Class-based or Level-based?

Level based. I don't like some classes getting more ability score increases or feats than others. I think every class should be balanced before even taking feats into consideration. I also hate class-based feat progression because it's one of the main reasons they aren't giving feats at level 1...

D&D 5E (2014) Smite spells in the new packet

Sorry, but I disagree. Just because both classes get something at level 17, doesn't mean it's okay for a 5th level spell to be at all comparable to a 9th level spell. A 5th level spell should be balanced with all other 5th level spells. Also, paladins can use two of these a day, while a wizard...

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L The Next Phase

It's a pity that we won't get the chance to test any of this stuff. Here's hoping they get it right.

D&D 5E (2014) Spells That Still Need to be Fixed (September Packet)

I've posted this topic before, but I'm updating my list of spells for the new packet. Surprise, most of the same broken spells are still broken. They did at least do what I suggested with fireball, though. It's a start. ;) Animate Dead: I'd reduce the spell level to 1. Yes, I'm serious. The...

D&D 5E (2014) Tracking without "tracking" feature, tripping without "trip"

Rangers shouldn't be the only ones that can track. I think Tracking should just be a Wisdom (Survival) check, and Rangers should get the Survival skill for free. After all, it's hard to imagine a ranger without it.

D&D 5E (2014) New D&D Next Playtest package is up (19/9/2013) [merged threads]

Fighters are better at fighting. They get more attacks and other abilities that let them use weapons better than mages or bards can. Equalizing the to-hit bonuses simplifies and balances things, especially where multiclassing is concerned. Plus, it allows non-fighter characters to remain...
