Well, the solution is simple - sell it. Next turn you DM throw in a couple of monsters without treasure. Balance restored. However don't call it cheating. Cheating doesn't happen by mistake, plus it would benefit the cheater if it was.

I don't think it is too powerful. Maybe it costs too much and the only way this can be a problem is if you decide to sell it - or if you have to pay the rest of the party to get it. I think the best way for your DM to avoid trouble with it is to name it "artifact" - so you can't price or sell it.
