    Dragon 379: Assassin Heroic Tier

    1. The fact that half of your attacks are spell damage instead of weapon damages, and you get significant damage from bonus dice, means that small size assassins aren't at a significant disadvantage. 2. You could very, very easily play the assassin as a completely (or very nearly completely)...

    "evil" protagonists

I don't know for certain what was going through his mind and what emotional reactions he was hoping to garner from the reader. I can make inferences though. Those are the inferences I make. I suppose you could make others, but I think mine are pretty well supported by the text. As for your...

    Dragon 379: Assassin Heroic Tier

I really like the tactical aspect. Sure, its hit points are low, but you really shouldn't be adjacent to an enemy for more than an instant. Shadow Step lets you jump into an ally's shadow, and half your attacks are ranged, so feel free to hit and run. Captured Shadow wins the cool award so far.

    "evil" protagonists

If Vance didn't intend Dying Earth to be funny, then I still think his writing is poor, just for a different reason. 1. This is not an either/or proposition. The fact that he addresses a theme in a fashion I do not enjoy is not unrelated to his skill as an author. 2. Plus, you're being a...

I have DMGII and Revenge of the Giants

Do you think that the DMG II has significant value for someone who already has a DDI subscription and is willing to mine the compendium and online tools for crunch material? Just a guess is fine if its not clear what from it will be placed online.

    New D&D Survey

They should adjust their survey so that its more clear how it means to measure people who don't own a hardcopy of the PHB II, but who do have a D&D Insider subscription. I "use" the PHB II, but I can't answer questions about its organization or format.

    "evil" protagonists

I keep feeling like I"m not fully explaining my opinions on this. Maybe I am. I don't know. The Cugel books are a humorous series of events where Cugel tries to screw people over, they screw him over, he screws them over back, and its all entertaining even if everyone's a bit evil in a...

    "evil" protagonists

pawsplay- its not that I think that rape shouldn't be in fiction. Its that I think that rape shouldn't be written poorly in fiction. Writing poorly is generally a bad idea. Writing poorly about rape just makes it worse. Books aren't just recitations of fictional events. You can't just say...

    Archer Ranger vs. TWF Ranger

I've got a group at level 14. The campaign is combat heavy and hands out experience as per guidelines, meaning about 10 encounters per level. 1. The degree to which a character in the back lines is still contributing his healing surges depends heavily on the party. In my party, we have three...

    Archer Ranger vs. TWF Ranger

The archery build is better. If you intend to play an archery ranger, there are two styles of play you can go with in combat. You can fight on the front lines, or you can lurk in the back. If you fight on the front lines, combat mobility is a good feat. Toughness is a good feat too, of...

Demon Queens Enclave - Session Reports

Actually, in this one, working with the drow can be really worthwhile. I mean, yes, they backstab you, but things are set up so that working with the drow is much better than working against. Until they backstab you. Ideally you figure out that its coming.

The Best Game of All Time...

I don't think a single game can cover all possible bases. And I think the most important thing for a game to do is to figure out what kind of game it wants to be, and what makes that kind of game fun, and then to make sure the actual experience of playing the game focuses on it. With that in...

What is Vancian magic and does DnD have it?

In spoiler blocks. The one he sold to be raped: She ruled a kingdom after usurping power from the prior ruler when he lost the magical item that let him control demons. Cugel reappeared, wearing the magic item, and impersonating the individual who rightly owned it. There was conflict, in...

I'm not sure what to say to that.

Trying a new style of Gaming

Throw in a session of Og: Unearthed, as well. Perfect for one shot games. Maybe one of Faerie Tale, if you have the right group. Its a clever little game in its own right, even if its designed for kids.

    "evil" protagonists

Nope! No one at all! Its just that whenever these sorts of issues come up, based on past experience, there's always someone who comes in and backlashes. Generally they're a person who's convinced of one or more of the following: that there's something vaguely suspicious about bringing up...

    "evil" protagonists

    1. Its worth noting that Vance published this in 1950. That was a time when marital rape and rape by (nonviolent) coercion weren't really considered to be "real" rape. They weren't considered good, but they weren't considered rape. I don't know if that attitude affected his treatment of at...

    Previews for September and Beyond

Surprisingly, I'm a bit with Derren on this one. They should have made the canaries full fledged dragons. I don't think you're supposed to actually fight this guy. I think this stat block is fan service. You know, like a technical readout of the engineering details of the Starship...

    "evil" protagonists

I can't say that its impossible for me to enjoy a book with an evil protagonist who commits rape. Its just that it rarely happens. In fact, I can't think of an example of it happening. In books like Bones of the Dragon, by Weis and Hickman, the main characters are fantasy versions of...

I have DMGII and Revenge of the Giants

I always thought the Dabus were a cool idea that would work just fine if they spoke in pictures instead of rebuses.
