WotC Announces OGL 1.1 -- Revised Terms, Royalties, and Annual Revenue Reporting

Also, notice that now videos, websites and other media other than print are not going to be allowed to use OGL 1.1 content. That means no competing with D&D Beyond kids, No Level Up Tools website next time, and also that there might never be another Critical Role (at least there will not be...

WotC Announces OGL 1.1 -- Revised Terms, Royalties, and Annual Revenue Reporting

They are effectively giving WoTC copyright for their work in exchange for eyeballs Yeah except that Section 9, regardless of what is says, doesn't apply to works that weren't released under a lisence that contains Section 9. We'll see what 1.1 has in it.

WotC Announces OGL 1.1 -- Revised Terms, Royalties, and Annual Revenue Reporting

Open source software licenses that say "you can use this work under this lisence, or any future version of this lisence" for instance the GPL are actually applied to the work in question. The clause you are relying on in 1.0a will not be the governing license for OneDnD because OneDnD will...

WotC Announces OGL 1.1 -- Revised Terms, Royalties, and Annual Revenue Reporting

I disagree. They have just now told us essentially what is in the document. It is the proper time to get really angry so that they can walk back any horrible decisions before they are set in stone. Corporations don't make U-Turns that easily, so you have to shoot down their trial baloons with...

WotC Announces OGL 1.1 -- Revised Terms, Royalties, and Annual Revenue Reporting

I don't think your assumption that OGL 1.0a would apply to new material released under 1.1 can hold just because of some clause in 1.0a. The new stuff will just be released under a license that doesn't have the "any version" clause any more, and that will be that, it will break porting stuff.

WotC Announces OGL 1.1 -- Revised Terms, Royalties, and Annual Revenue Reporting

No, I think there is a good chance you are right and this will assign some of us to an OGL 1.0a backwater. There is, however a small chance that enough of the ecosystem will stay OGL 1.0a that we will keep a critical mass of players on 5E. Man this makes me mad, I mostly liked the One DnD...

WotC Announces OGL 1.1 -- Revised Terms, Royalties, and Annual Revenue Reporting

This is extremely dissapointing. Man, I am mad. My take on this is that it goes way too far on poisoning the market for third party products. I think that this is the day that 3rd party publishers will have to decide to stick with 5E, and the community will have to release our own patches /...

RPG Freebies, Bundles, and Sales News (November 20, 2022)

This is a great chance to grab the LevelUp Books at a steep discount. While I have not yet looked at the "Advanced 5E" bits in the Adventurer's Guide, and was impressed more with the solidity than the flair of the Monstrous Menagerie, I am finding the Trials and Treasures (DM's Guide) to be...

Level Up (A5E) Sharing Advanced 5E's Encounter Building Rules

Wizards prohibits third parties who accept the OGL from using "Dungeons and Dragons" anywhere on the product, even the normally commercially OK statement that your product is "compatible" with D&D. If it wasn't explicitly prohibited by the OGL to call products "Dungeons and Dragons Compatible"...

New Bill to Limit Copyright to 56 Years, Would be Retroactive

Thanks for the reminder and for doing your job ;)

New Bill to Limit Copyright to 56 Years, Would be Retroactive

Hawley is a giant jackass trying to pick a fight with Disney. Still, this is a great idea. 56 years is about right, and it should be applied retroactively.

Dragonlance [+] What do you like most about DRAGONLANCE?

The proper sweep of history, the before times, the cataclysm, the lost years, and the urgency of the Dragon wars. Things actually happened that changed the world properly, and each era has its own flavor. As a contrast, The Forgotten Realms, despite the various hastily bolted on "Gods come to...

Spelljammer D&D Direct Live Report: 9am PDT (5pm BST) SPELLJAMMER CONFIRMED! DRAGONLANCE!

Oh, and why do I dislike boxed sets...? because they end up crushed and held together with tape in far too few years.

Spelljammer D&D Direct Live Report: 9am PDT (5pm BST) SPELLJAMMER CONFIRMED! DRAGONLANCE!

Personally, I would rather have a single hardcover book, but we have to remember the original Spelljammer set was also in multiple parts. I just pulled out my Spelljammer boxed set from 1989, and it was $18 U.S. back then. Inside are 2 x 96 page flimsy softcover booklets with color covers and...

Roll20 Now Has 10 Million Users

Roll20 is clunky old and slow, but does everything (not well, but does it). So it can fit somewhere in everyone's stack. We use it mostly for communal dice rolling sharing, and in some games folks have their character sheets there. We do voice on discord. When Roll20 freaked out the other...

D&D 5E (2014) Mythological Figures: Fionn mac Cumhail

Wow, thanks for dropping the knowledge on us too @Marandahir . Gotta kinda disagree with your last point though, I think your "Barbarian Wolf-Guy Wisdom Warrior Poet Fighter" is about as close to a definition of the Ranger class as you are likely to get.

D&D 5E (2014) Mythological Figures: Comte de Saint Germain

Super fun guy! What a long stat block though when you multiclass those two.... One correction 1: Healing. Creature regains 18 (2d4+3) hit points. <-- you mean 8
