    D&D 5E (2024) Pulse check on 1D&D excitement level

"Meh - Mostly the right direction. It's different, not exciting. Feels like the playtest will result in a product I like." It's a fairly mild revision to 5th, which is what I expected, and which inherently isn't exciting.

D&D General M. T. Black made his own 5e clone. Iskandar Players Handbook.

Well, you don't actually have to get rid of them. A valid alternative is to just rename them to something other than "elf", then buff them to be clearly superior to any other option.

Which is just wrong. Druids be allowed to take tiny forms as soon as they gain the ability to take animal shapes - at 7th level, just as Gary Gygax intended.

Indeed, they actually reprinted the 1st edition versions of the bard, druid, paladin, and ranger in their respective Complete Handbooks in 2e to facilitate that sort of mixing.

Huh? It's almost identical to the current text. Version in the current PHB (p.86), differences from the new version in bold: New version from the playetst PDF, differences from the old in bold: Seriously, one clause was deleted, the specific mention of the Oathbreaker as the likely...

WotC What is the last WotC adventure you played in or DM'd?

I don't think I've ever played a WotC adventure. Back before WotC bought TSR, in the mid-1990s, I played in . . . gosh, can't remember the adventure, I think it was one of the famous Greyhawk-by-default ones from the 1980s but definitely not Temple of Elemental Evil? We encountered a gorgon...

Kyle Brink Interviewed by Teos Abadia (Alphastream) on OGL, WotC, & D&D

When a hurricane hits, survival actions don't depend on whether it was directed at you maliciously or not. When evaluating in the aftermath what you should do in preparation for future hurricanes, it matters a lot whether it was directed at you maliciously or not. People who have had their...

Kyle Brink Interviewed by Teos Abadia (Alphastream) on OGL, WotC, & D&D

The idea that the top executives told their minions "Stop Disney", and that as the implementing language was being knocked back and forth between minions in business and legal, the dollar threshold got pulled too far down? That's really not all that improbable. Particularly since when the...

WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

One thing I've really appreciated about your posts, that I have not reliably seen out of other lawyers' commenting on the situation over the last month, is that you show a reluctance to speculate on how the law applies to facts you don't really know. I realize that frustrates other people, but...

WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

This is getting well wide of the topic of this thread or even this entire website, but . . . There are two situations here. The first situation is one like the Linux kernel, where there have been no systematic copyright assignments. In this case, the trick is that pretty much every...

WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

Granting that distinction, how have you reached the conclusion that it is remotely certain that a court is going to treat everything in the 3.5 SRD as "game rules" rather than "material about a setting" for purposes of copyright law? Seriously. When I said eleven points of similarity on the...

WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

People keep saying that. I'm not sure why. It's pretty easy to go on to the Archives of Nethys and find lots of stuff that's blatantly obviously pulled from the 3.5 SRD that is not common to other fantasy games (whether tabletop or computer). It might be because of a game of Telephone from a...

D&D 5E (2024) What would you actually want from an arcane half-caster in 1D&D PHB?

That's fine. My issue is not the desire, but the use of inherently confusing terminology to express the desire. A definition of "true gish" under which the original, word-coined-specifically-to-describe-it "gish" is not a "true gish" is just ridiculous. Pick an actual example of what you want...

D&D 5E (2024) What would you actually want from an arcane half-caster in 1D&D PHB?

I still don't get people declaring that a "true Gish" is utterly unlike the original gish, which as an AD&D fighter/magic-user was the epitome of "two totally separate things they’re kinda good at". It seems a choice of terminology designed to maximize confusion.

WotC updates SRD resources page with CC faq and SRD 5.1 under CC

The "GPL is more free/open because it keeps people from appropriating free/open material" versus "BSD is more free/open because it gives people more rights to use free/open material" debate was so old already a quarter-century ago. Definitional debates can't be won, only appealed to authority...

I'd like to see a slipcase-and-three-books version of Dominaria -- setting, adventure, and monster book, just like Spelljammer, at the Spelljammer price point -- but instead of a DM screen, include a package of Magic cards that include tournament-legal functional reprints of the original five...
