    D&D 5E (2014) Legen Lore 7/14/2014

True. That said, the additional 32 pages (what does that make the 5e MM? 352 pages?) and Modrons suggests to me that WotC really wants to get as Manu iconic monsters in the new MM. To many iconic monsters were left out of the 4e MM in my opinion. Of course, that's kind of a double edge sword...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legen Lore 7/14/2014

Talk about burrying the lead! That said, it looks to me like they're not holding anything back. They're not saving anything for MMII. Which is something that I appreciate.

D&D 5E (2014) Did you participate in the playtest?

I'm getting a lot of excitement out of the process as well. It's mostly been a DDN/5e news blackout for me. So much so that I was shocked when I found out the Starter Set was for sale, the Sunday after it was released to WPN stores. I've spent the past week devouring the 5e Basic rules. And...

D&D 5E (2014) Did you participate in the playtest?

I did not participate in the playtest, and so now I'm just getting caught up, and it's really weird. I like 5e so far, based on what I've read and the one Encounters session I've played in, but that's it. I was wondering if there's anyone else who didn't participate in the playtest, but is now...

D&D 5E (2014) My New Players Have Quit 5th Edition

I just re-looked up the surprise, and you're right you can take reactions after your turn ends. I don't know why I thought it wasn't until the next round. I don't know how I feel about the new surprise rules. On one hand, they make sense in the new action economy of 5e. On the other, there's a...

D&D 5E (2014) My New Players Have Quit 5th Edition

So, in the game I just finished playing, the party (a group of investigators in a city game) put a group of adventurers on trial (one of the party was a prosecutor) and one of the adventurers was explicitly the brother of all the previous rogues the adventuring party had. (Apparently, all of his...

D&D 5E (2014) My New Players Have Quit 5th Edition

Well, technically, there's no surprise round. Though I don't know if knowing that would have changed the way you ran the combat. Or if you do know it and simply used surprise round because that's been the nomenclature for 14 years. During the first round of combat, characters that are surprised...

Will there be a 4.75 a la Pathfinder?

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "as an item" as that is not a phrase I'm familiar with as a legal term of art. Restricting myself to federal law, trade dress is protected by §43(a) of the Lanham Act. (15 USC §1125 see also Two Pesos, Inc. v. Taco Cabana, Inc., 505 US 763) That said, I think...

A Question for 4E Players: Where to now?

I just started DMing 4e game, it's not ending anytime soon. Certainly not on the account of a new edition. But, at a minimum, I'll play 5e at encounters. However, I know my friends, they'll want a taste of 5e and I'll use that to see how they might like creating Basic characters for the Starter...

Will there be a 4.75 a la Pathfinder?

Well, you can flip through a book before you buy it. If there is a likelihood of confusion that the layout would make a consumer think the book is a WotC book and not a 3PP, then there's at least an argument for trademark. Any given page from a 4e book is covered by copyright, taken together...

Will there be a 4.75 a la Pathfinder?

Layout would fall under trade dress (i.e., trademark) not copyright. I'm a pedantic jerk.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Multiverse is back....

I love selling D&D settings short. And I will continue to sell them short for my own fun as long as I roleplay. I'm surprised you don't have more fun smashing them up, actually. Allowing PCs to hop settings is a thing I've liked since since I started playing back when I was in the Navy. One of...

D&D 5E (2014) My biggest gripe about 5e so far, as a DM

Well that's nifty, wish I'd had something like that in my 3.x days.

D&D 5E (2014) DAOM IS DEAD DEAD DEAD!!!!

You may may want to look at the Cleric spell Sacred Flame on page 100 of the Basic Rules: This suggests to me that the 5e PHB may have similar wizard spells. Side note: why don't spell descriptions say what class they are for?

D&D 5E (2014) Encounter building in the Starter Set

Great! Sorry, I'm really behind. I completely ignored the play test and I learned literally nothing about 5e until I bought the Starter Set on Sunday and I've been reading the Basic pdf since last night. So, I'm basically playing catch-up.

D&D 5E (2014) Encounter building in the Starter Set

After reading my previous post carefully, I've decided that I'm still right on a technicality. :D Seriously though, I don't remember 4e having group skill checks where everyone makes the check and the whole party succeeds if half come-up success. The campaign I just finished playing in never...

D&D 5E (2014) Encounter building in the Starter Set

I'm totally with you on the group skill checks. Frankly, this is the best addition to the skill system since it was introduced in 3e. Beyond the encounters in the adventure itself, there are enough monsters in the appendix to tied over a DM for a few game sessions. I don't think it's quite...

    Hobbit review thread

I enjoyed it, but a number of things bothered me, reducing my enjoyment. First, I didn't like the Beorn sequence. In the book, it's a nice breather, but here it's just another tense action scene. In a movie filled with tense action scenes. Frankly, the movie could have used some breathing room...

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

Wait, is the OP about one power? Did I miss a link? Man, I'm behind. So much for precision.

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

For me personally, I don't find the reasoning bad at all. If the game has variable damage, then it seems to me that it's possible to have some attacks minimum damage > 0. How this plays out to me is that the attacker makes a precision attack for a small target area. But, if the attacker misses...
