Is the Paladin class poorly designed?

Absolutely! If there's one thing that 3.xe taught us, it's that "gear management" can be the difference between a weak PC and a mighty PC. Tangent: It interesting to see how this plays out in 4e. For example, you may find magic items far above your level, and yet you may only make items of...

Is the Paladin class poorly designed?

Besides being a primary attack stat, Strength offers:Channel Divinity: Divine Strength <okay, but not great> Better basic melee attacks <for OAs> No secondary effects from Encounter, Daily, Utility, or PP powers. Gees, is that a short list.

Is the Paladin class poorly designed?

Besides being a primary attack stat, Charisma offers:Channel Divinity: Divine Mettle (an excellent class feature!) Divine Challenge radiant damage Intimidate and Diplomacy skill exploits Wrath of the Gods (Paladin Utility 6) <made of Win> Death Ward (Paladin Utility 16) <lame> 1 (Str-based)...

Is the Paladin class poorly designed?

Maybe. (BTW, what ability score arrays are you using? I'm assuming a dragonborn Str-paladin is Str 18 Chr 10. I think you are assuming Str 18, Chr 12.) The difference is as much psychological as mathmatical. If the paladin's DC damage is 7 radiant hp, that sounds significant. If it's...

Is the Paladin class poorly designed?

 I guess so! (Int, huh? Why? <puzzled>) Paladins are great if they have high Str, Cha, and Wis. They don't need much else.

Is the Paladin class poorly designed?

True! That's the central reason to play one, in my book. You get to defend and lead (divine challenge and heal/buff), which I like. And as several have mentioned in this thread, a few of the Paladin powers at higher levels are really sweet. My warlord wishes he had easy access to some of these.

Is the Paladin class poorly designed?

Obviously. I currently play in three separate gaming groups, with three separate DMs. OA just don't happen. Marks, OTOH, are ignored sometimes...but only if the defenders are built poorly, or are in a poor tactical position that round. (A Str-Paladin would be the afore-mentioned poorly-built...

Is the Paladin class poorly designed?

Yeah. I'm seeing a trend here. ;) Strength Paladins are fine if you let everyone have high stats. :D

Is the Paladin class poorly designed?

Maybe I missed this, but: Where are you getting 28 points from for "Method 2: Point Buy"? Is there some errata I missed? ;) That is a great Str-Paladin At-Will....I wonder if it makes sense for a low level Cha-paladin as well.

Is the Paladin class poorly designed?

Err.....yeah. Counting on OAs for damage output in combat is....how shall I put this....very "campaign dependent". ;) Being a defender (paladin) means being painful to avoid. Unlike a Fighter, a Paladin's defender qualities depend on one ability score. That ability score is only maxed on...

    Battlerager: Experiences?

Yup. BRV Ftr, Str 16, Chain, (including Crits): Longsword: Atk 50%, Dam 1d8+3+1 = 4.425 DPR Warhammer: Atk 45%, Dam 1d10+3+2 = 4.95 DPR

    Battlerager: Experiences?

If you run the numbers, going hammer for a BRV Ftr is a higher damage output than going longsword. So the point still stands. ...unless I've made a math error, which is possible. Corrections?B-)

Is the Paladin class poorly designed?

Because your DM is taking it easy on you? :) It's already the case that a Paladin's Ref is abysmal. But with low Str and Con, so is your Fort...and you'd think a Paladin would have a good Fort! The best build I can see for a Dragonborn Paladin is Cha-based: Str 12 Con 13 Dex 9 Int 10 Wis 16...

Is the Paladin class poorly designed?

Exactly. Which just flat-out sucks, big time. And it's especially painful for the Dragonborn, as her breath is based on Str/Con/Dex. So as the dragonborn paladin levels up, her breath weapon becomes more and more superfluous. Definitively un-fun. It's house rule time! The Divine Challenge...

Is the Paladin class poorly designed?

I'm building my first Paladin, and finding it very difficult to balance this class. It has two primary builds - Str and Chr, and one secondary stat: Wis. Yet if you go with the Str build your "defender qualities" (read: Divine Challenge) is really sub-par. *(And if you go with a Chr-paladin...

    Battlerager: Experiences?

I disagree. -1 because no WT. -1 because low prof weapon. Yes, you get a higher damage that compensates...but only over the long haul of averages. The trick here is that hitting does - in fact - matter to the Ftr for many of the nifty abilities. Example? Oh, I dunno,.... Crushing Surge...

    D&D 4E 4e - be a king

Sounds like a good idea. But....you'll want a plot to knit all of these "rulership" skill challenges together. Unlike combat - which can be gratuitous but still fun - the skill challenges you propose should have a clear path and destination. IMO, of course.

    Battlerager: Experiences?

Very true. In my BRV Ftr's last encounter, most enemies had "aura" damage, and about half were ranged attackers. Against a balanced enemy, the BRV Ftr isn't much better off that the WT Ftr. Next game I'll track my THP, hp, heals, etc, and post them here, just as Dr Sage has done. You sure...
