Monster Manuals: Things You Don't Kill

I would love a book that wasn't focussed entirely on monsters that you can beat up. Like somebody mentioned, little tidbits about recommended ways to handle somebody trying to befriend a singing mushroom or how good, exactly, a bat is at spying, or how difficult it is to control a flying griffon...

    Psionics: Yea or Nay?

I like psionics and I always have. To my mind, there's not a whole lot of difference between some guy reading an arcane tome and suddenly being able to fling fireballs from the knowledge in his head and some guy meditating and suddenly being able to fling fireballs from the knowledge in his...

I want some opinions... (gaming topic)

I'd say he's in his right. If you say, "Hey, you DM for a while," and he says, "Let's play a different game" and everybody but you agrees, then you're in the minority and either need to adjust yourself or find a new group. If he changes the game "out from under the rug," what kind of people do...

    What Edition/Version for my Mega-Dungeon

Personally, I'd use Labyrinth Lord. But no matter what edition you use, you should design it like it's going to be in oD&D. Don't rely on nifty combat powers or DCs of 50 or whatever, but rely on original and intelligent descriptions and incredible design.

    Streamlining the d20 system

I like it, honestly. If I went with skills, I'd probably go the 4th edition route and make it a binary skill system instead of a ranked one; where if you have the skill you get +5, and if you don't, then you roll it like normal. Other than that, I like it. I think there's a sweet spot as to...

    Why do you leave games?

    1) My personal schedule and others' doesn't usually align. I'm not a regular poster, and sometimes I'm not on the internet at all. Like, for days. When I get back online, I feel really bad about not posting for the last couple of days, and then I avoid the site I was playing on. It's a horrible...

    Powerfull Charge - Pointless?

Isn't this the wrong part of the forum for 4e-specific character building advice?

Best party for BD&D dungeon crawling

Bullgrit: 1) I'd stick with the Magic User. I can't remember what the maximum level for elf is, but an uncapped level limit is always nice. If elves can make it to 12th, then I guess you might as well be an elf. 2) Dwarves are almost always better than fighters. Slightly slower level...

    My Gaming Group is Awesome

My group is also awesome. It consists of my brother, and our close mutual friend. It also sometimes consists of my girlfriend or one of our other best friends, whom my girlfriend doesn't get along with but otherwise is indifferent to. We don't have any problems, really, and we all have happy...

DnD: What is it to you?

To me? D&D is about dungeon-crawling, about exploration, and Gygaxian naturalism. It's about kicking down doors, taking their stuff, and having a blast over some beer and pretzels.

    Traps and the Clock

Quoted for truth. It's not a matter of "old-school" vs "new school", it's a matter of "good design" vs "bad design." There were stupid, unavoidable traps in old-school D&D and there are stupid, boring traps in new-school D&D. And there were plenty of cool, memorable traps that required equal...

Fun to Read... Boring/Bad to Play

Palladium. I picked it up because there was so much to the books, and it all seemed so full of flavor and so interesting! I tried to play it, and there were numerous, serious problems between me and playing nirvana. It just didn't click. It's still got some cool stuff in there that I can mine...

    Gaming + Text Messages

Definately a possibility for distraction. Once, I had a player who was using a computer to play music. It was fine, until I left the table to use the bathroom and came back and he was looking at random stuff on the internet. Luckily, I said, "Hey, lemme change the music on that real quick"...

Best simulacrum for AD&D 1st Ed feel

I personally love the Labyrinth Lord game system. It feels exactly like the system I first fell in love with. And I understand the AEC is incredible too, although I've yet to use it in play. You can get them both for free. The only way you'll pay is if you want them in some sort of physical...

How much complexity is right for you?

Thanks for the help, guys. I'm leaning towards keeping my Weapon Qualities table, but probably simplifying it out even more. As it is, I've got 14 weapons between 8 weapon qualities, since some of them are one-or-the-other deals (like Large vs Small or Heavy vs Light.) Even then, though, when I...

    The Right Fit

Your question about how to start the conversation going is a pretty good one. Honestly, you might be nuking it. Just up and ask them. "Hey, I'm writing a homebrew campaign world for our game next week and was just wondering whether you guys would like a Dark Sun sandbox or a Forgotten Realms...

Oye! All this content is getting merged in to General Discussion

This is true. Even the plots and places has a strong 4th edition D&D bias, and the Legacy D&D section has a tremendous 3e bias. I always liked this section, so as to be able to keep tabs on the other wierd and wonderful games in the world even if I didn't post much. I guess that's what's getting...

    Need Help reasoning out Guns

If the game has abstracted combat to a single d20 roll, is there really any need to provide combat actions like that? Part of attacking with a weapon is using it to its capacity and suiting the situation. It's incidental as to what "mode" the shooter is using, as long as they hit. Does adding...

Evil DM's, I need your help!

Got it. That is pretty cool, actually. For my style of games, demons are a horrific impersonal force, more like elementals than evil spirits. But if one has the stock Big Red Dudes as demons, that could be seriously cool. I guess I was thinking of ajanders, whom I still disagree with. To let...

Newbie DM question: how much to reveal about the monsters?

I don't have much experience with 4th edition, but this is really a timeless question. You should describe only that which the characters could know. They'll certainly know that the creatures are goblins, unless goblins are rare creatures in your world. If it's tall and grim and covered in...
