    Elven Samurai...

Whithout delving to deeply into the does xenophobia beget racism debate ( happen to think that it does - there are simply to many historical analogs to ignore). Further, We have to remember that we are looking at middle-aged societies with out 21st century "enlightened" eyes - so what may seem...

    What's the ultimate Dwarf ride?

Actually, they are called Bighorn Sheep - but the point still stands - they make great mounts for mountainous terrain. Personally, I would give them +5 to Balance and Climb (but only in mountains) Underground.... well their use dimishes.

A world with no roads, no doors, and no boats

Irda, I still think that cultural and social stagnetation will occur - with T-circles, I think that you are going to see a homoginization of cultures accross the entire network. Using the historical analog, as travel times have decreased, so to have the cultural differences. So if you...

    D&D - Hobby or game?

Considering how much I spend on it.... definately hobby - However, it alos just so happens to involve playing a game. But also includes world building, socialization, creative thinking etc.......

A world with no roads, no doors, and no boats

Actually, I can see a network of these types of portals to be socially and culturally stagnating. Think about it. (Danger, using RL analogy) If Europe had a series of portals to the orient, the motivation to perform much of the exploration during the age of exploration is simply not there...

I'm sick to death of dwarves, elves, halflings, and gnomes!

Re: Mokole Again, I ask, how do you wrap your mind around a character like this and become them? To my way of thinking it is simply not possible - if I were to do it all that I would end up doing is playing a Human in a Lizard's skin - in effect reducing the "flavor" down to a bunch of stats...

I'm sick to death of dwarves, elves, halflings, and gnomes!

My question to those that want to play something truly "exotic" is how do you do it? I mean, playing a Lizard would be so foreign to a human thought process that I do not know how one would do it - after all you have spent X number of years having your brain wired to think like a human and...

I'm sick to death of dwarves, elves, halflings, and gnomes!

Then again, you might as well ask for a seeting without swords or magic. - You just have to accept the fact that in order for a setting to be accpetable to the mainstream audience they have to have the demi-humans. Or you could simply homebrew a world and make them go away......

    Rant: Flavor restrictions

But I think that we are missing the main point of the post. Sure we can Rule Zero them out (and I have in my world) - but the fact is that they are in the PHB and therefore official so such things as Living Greyhawk are now bound to them. I agree they should be errated out and then placed in...

    "Family" game?

The biggest problem that we run into with descriptions like "family-frindly" is that it allows for too many shades of Grey. I think that traditionally, family freindly games where those that do not involve any sort of combat. Games that had combat like Risk, Stratego or Battleship have always...

[BoVD]Well, since I can't seem to post this on Wizards forums...

However,(and please correct me if I am wrong), I was under the impression that the BovD was not really intended for PCs - but more as a DM tool to enhace the depravity of the villains. Thereby keeping the morality play aspects of the game in tack. i.e. the PCs still wear the white hats - the...

    Coolest weapon from literature?

I stand corrected - I thought that they could not re-work Valarian steel..... I guess they can not create new steel.

    Coolest weapon from literature?

Yes, Ice is gone - however they did not melt it down. The Lannisters simply took the blade from Ice and placed it into Jamies new sword. The reason is that the have lost the ability to create/work Valarian Steel.

    Coolest weapon from literature?

Regarding the Tolkien Vs. Moorcock debate, I have to agree with ForceUser in that Moorcock "feels" more pulpy than Tolkien. Does this make Tolkien better than Moorcock - not necessarily (I think that there are other reasons - primarily subjective that do that) but pulp is certainlly not bad -...

    Coolest weapon from literature?

Well, Ice was made of Valarian Steel, so it is certainly masterwork - Perhaps a +1 with Keen on it. But with Martin's world being so low magic, it is hard to tell.

Rethinking the roles of Goblins, Orcs, Kobolds and so on

Actually, I have felt this way about the Dwarves. In the same campaign with the Ottoman Hobgoblins, I had a nation-state of Dwarves that rebelled against the "divine-right" mandate typical of Dwarven kingdoms and formed a workers paradise. Socially, the rest of the continent was not ready for...

Rethinking the roles of Goblins, Orcs, Kobolds and so on

RE: Hobgoblins - in a campaign world that never saw the light of day I had created a hobgoblin nation that was analogous to the Arabs of the 14 and 15th centuries with the standard races beginning the reconquista of part of the captured territories. In this case the hobgoblins were neither good...
