D&D 5E (2014) Best Class and Specialization for Infiltration?

Lore bard. Full boat of magic skills, stupid good at skills, cutting words to help on opposed checks. You should be able to talk or sneak past anything. Also stealth as written isn't as restrictive as you make out outside of combat. In combat everyone is magically looking everywhere and don't...

D&D 5E (2014) I'm *GASP* Actually Going to Be Playing 5e in a Few Weeks -- What are the Character Creation Pitfalls to Avoid?

Gotta be tough for a full spell caster to wait till level 3 to also get more skills than any other class in the game. :) Seriously though it's a good point level 1 is a sort of trimmed down point for the class a apprentice level. Most classes develop into their concept at 3 and depending on...

D&D 5E (2014) I'm *GASP* Actually Going to Be Playing 5e in a Few Weeks -- What are the Character Creation Pitfalls to Avoid?

You could almost suggest bard for any character concept they are strong in a very wide range of abilities.

    D&D 5E (2014) Rogues without Darkvision

Yes, who knows how it works. It's up to the GM to form a picture of how it will work. So the question should be IMO what is a way of looking at this that promotes the most fun for the group. Is stealth a issue in your games where it's being abused and rogue X walks around unchecked. Well then...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Smooth Talker

Maybe I'm just a jerk GM but hypnotic gaze ends at the end of the turn you stop maintaining it. So you use it, they are incapacitated and charmed. You use your action to convince them to let you past at advantage thanks to the charm. They can now act on their initiative(assuming it's rolled in a...

D&D 5E (2014) I'm *GASP* Actually Going to Be Playing 5e in a Few Weeks -- What are the Character Creation Pitfalls to Avoid?

A trap? No, it is clear and requires no system mastery to understand. Good? Not really. Once a day things exist but they usually aren't the gimmick your path is designed around.

D&D 5E (2014) I'm *GASP* Actually Going to Be Playing 5e in a Few Weeks -- What are the Character Creation Pitfalls to Avoid?

It reduces the odds of success but to me that isn't what makes it a trap. Now yes this is campaign dependent like well everything. But the healing mechanic are what make it a trap as in unforeseen levels of problems from your first look. Once clerics hit 9 other options are available but you...

D&D 5E (2014) Improving Neverlight Grove (OotA Spoilers)

My players should be arriving there in 2-3 sessions so I'm curious about this as well.

    D&D 5E (2014) Class guides?

I might have to try and make one. My problem is I have a hard enough time typing a short post out in a fashion people can understand. Organizing my thoughts in a order that makes sense doesn't come naturally to me when I'm writing.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Smooth Talker

Problem is until 14th level most charms suck for out of combat actions as the target remembers and is pissed about it. If you plan on being long gone once the charm breaks it's okay. But it's a narrow campaign that this works for. I don't disagree with the general rule on charms but I wish that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Class guides?

Any class guides based more on cool over numbers? Don't know why but I find them entertaining to read. To give a frame of reference I was reading wizard guide and the cantrips for move earth said something like buy a shovel. And I'm thinking you're a wizard/sorcerer whatever not a peasant...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rogues without Darkvision

I'm sure there are more issues than that even. For 1 I'm not worried very few spells have a duration that is combat meaningful to me as in they already have durations way past the length of any fight we've done. One time we went past 10 rounds and a spell dropped but that was end of campaign...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rogues without Darkvision

One of the easier ways to handle the sprint speed if that's a real issue at your table is reduce the rounds time to 2 or 3 seconds. Range and ranged attacks should have some meaning so if you just boost movement speed it may make distance meaningless except on the largest of battlefields.

D&D 5E (2014) Shapeshifting and the Druid Class

I'd change it t 1/2 cr at least. The polymorph spell is full CR after all. Then I'd go more battle master fighter. Have a list of abilities you can learn that cost nature points or whatever to use that recharge on a short rest. These would be mods you can add to the new form with some kind of...

D&D 5E (2014) I'm *GASP* Actually Going to Be Playing 5e in a Few Weeks -- What are the Character Creation Pitfalls to Avoid?

Totem barbarian is kind of dependent I the campaign. If you aren't facing elemental damage often bear isn't much of a add. It mechanically would have been beter for me though, so berserker was weaker. On The other hand as little as frenzy helped me I still did fine so going with what you...

D&D 5E (2014) Pesky odd stat and decision paralysis.

I love feats. I take them until my concept is complete then round out my stats with what's left. I haven't seen a hit in power. When I get to play again I don't see myself changing in that regard. The game I'm running the totem barbarian went strength at level 4 the fighter took sentinel the...

D&D 5E (2014) I'm *GASP* Actually Going to Be Playing 5e in a Few Weeks -- What are the Character Creation Pitfalls to Avoid?

And how is your positive experience any less table dependent? The thing is the in game experiences is what created the negative feelings of so many people for the berserker. So your I trust in game to theory crafting idea while solid would indicate that for the vast majority of people who post...

D&D 5E (2014) Earth elemental grappling and burying alive questions

I had a similar idea but just from enemies with burrow. It doesn't have to create a tunnel. I just didn't do it as I couldn't come up with a fun way to do it. For burrow I'd probably treat it like rock to mud giving them a effective dig out speed based on making a strength save or athletics...

D&D 5E (2014) I'm *GASP* Actually Going to Be Playing 5e in a Few Weeks -- What are the Character Creation Pitfalls to Avoid?

About the same. It's s 5th level spell that removes only a single level of exhaustion. If the cleric has it to spare when camping for the night he'd toss one but more often than not it was too bad I don't have it too spare. The spell can return you from being turned to stone but being tired is...

D&D 5E (2014) I'm *GASP* Actually Going to Be Playing 5e in a Few Weeks -- What are the Character Creation Pitfalls to Avoid?

Not getting to them as quickly(level 2 halves my speed and my enemies haven't been obliging enough to run up to me often enough), more often failing my athletics check to escape things like a grapple, and like I said other uses of my bonus action usually dropping a enemy and getting one from my...
