OSR What Has Caused the OSR Revival?

My theory behind this is because OSR material is generally simple its very to tailor to taste. So every author puts out what works for them. This is much harder to do when the systems are mechanically complex and all the parts are super entwined. I liken it to cars. Pop the hood on something 40...

OSR What Has Caused the OSR Revival?

For me its the time thing. I started with 3e when it came out and still love it, but became fed up with all the stuff that goes along with it. (Seriously it bothers me that the rules for jumping a pit take up half a page.) I've been looking for a long time for something that is fast, easy and...

Should feats be open or class specific?

This is how I feel too. I want my monsters to be flavorful yet easy to make and run.

Should feats be open or class specific?

wow that's a lot of consensus on these boards.

Should feats be open or class specific?

(I want to preface this by saying this could be a very 5e topic but I've been working on a heartbreaker and just ended up thinking about this topic and was wondering what you guys thought.) Personally I am very torn on this. I thinking having general feats that everyone picks from can allow for...

    Saving throws one or many?

I have up to this point been using the 3e fort/ref/will save system I was just recently tossing around the idea of ditching 3 separate bonuses and just going with one which is then modified by an attribute based on the situation. Very little changes in play there is just one number on the...

    Saving throws one or many?

Yeah I like where 5e is headed and have the last packet (only looked at it briefly though). My own thing is meant to be even simpler though. No numbers inherently go up with level, a change I've made recently as I had it that some numbers went up. No skills just stat bonuses but each class has a...

    Saving throws one or many?

Not much to tell really. Its a fantasy heartbreaker I love 3e but I hate needing 900 pages to play it. My time is limited so I need a game that quick to prep, flexible but still has the feeling I want. So I have most of the game made but just hash stuff out on a very sporadic basis. The main...

    Saving throws one or many?

I've been trying hard to create a simple d20 game with fairly static numbers and was wondering how big a change this would be and what thoughts people have on the subject?

    25th anniversary reprint of HeroQuest

Heroquest got me into both RPGs and homebrewing, plus for the price you got a butt load of figs. I will certainly be picking it up.

Songs that changed for you after you learned the lyrics

Alt J's Breezeblocks. It's still a good song but learning it's about a man defending his fiancé from a crazy ex with murder just changes things.

What's the best and worst D&D book you own from any edition?

Best is probably the 3e PHB it was the first dnd product I got that I really grokked and it hot me and my pals playing for years. worst was the sword and fist supplement. That was overpriced and just generally an aweful book.

Ex-WotC Employees Weigh in on the No M:tG RPG Debate

I'm not surprised really. If you consider how worked up people get on these boards over rules and editions and what not, just add the stress of work and petty office politics and you have recipe for disaster.

What buildings are a MUST for any town?

I guess it would depend on the size of the town. if it's just a collection of houses (5-20 families I'd say) the outside of their houses you'd need a source of water, maybe a well, and a place to store your harvest and livestock, probably a communal barn. this sort of town would likely be a...

    Determining Monster Stats

yeah there never seems to be a uniform idea for abilities and monsters. In earlier editions it wasn't so bad because stats had such a small range and in fourth they pretty much decoupled ability scores from stats. I was just hoping that choose what you think fits or examine existing monsters...

    Determining Monster Stats

In any edition of Dnd a creatures attributes have far reaching effects. Strong things hit harded, fast things are harder to hit and so on. With that in mind i have never seen advice in DMG about determining attributes for monsters based on their level. This comes into play for me all the time...

    So where are you now?

Honestly if given a chance I'd start up a 3.5 game. I never ran across a lot of the issues that seem to have cropped up for some groups and I know the system well. If I had interested players I'd even run my home brew stuff.
