    4e D&D GSL Live

If you search the SRD, you'll find a single reference to psionics (and just the word as a power source).

    When did Vancian Spellcasting arrive?

The Vancian spell casting has been there since the beginning. I started with AD&D and it was quite prominent there and in all versions since until 4E. I never really played OD&D (and don't even have the books any longer) so I don't remember clearly the differences between AD&D and OD&D spells...

Pramas on 4E and New Gamers

I'll have to chime in a "me too" with regard to getting through the "great wall". I started playing D&D back with AD&D in 1980 and I've never had so much trouble getting through a chapter in a PHB. It was just ugly, especially all the [W] references that were not explained until much later...

Whoa. 4e is hard on PC mortality rates.

I don't buy that. Why is it necessarily a problem on the players side? We played through Keep on the Shadowfell the other night and ran into a period there of rolling really bad on our die rolls while the goblin irontooth and company were rolling really well. We started dropping and hurting...

    So is it fun?

Heh, good spin on things. Yes, we did make fun of a few things while playing 4E (minions, things we thought were way too video gamish, etc) but... no, we didn't have to make fun of 4E to have fun. The game is indeed fun to play (just as every previous version of D&D has been fun to play)...

    Wizards, need your input.

Okay, just a quick follow-up now that we've played the game. We enjoyed ourselves. There are some things we didn't like (marking was way too video gamey and we felt that our characters were a bit on the uber-powerful side - our first level characters would be the equivalent to a 3rd level 3E...

    Wizards, need your input.

I've heard lots of bad experiences with 4E wizards as well so I decided to roll one up (okay, no rolling of any dice...) just to give it a try this evening. This will be our first 4E game. I can't say any of us have really enjoyed the character creation process so far. While I was pleased at...

WotC drops more 3E support :(

As others have said, because it fosters good will and helps build/maintain links with the community (who is also their customer).

    Help me kill my DM!

I think the issue is avoiding meta-gaming think. This can really suck out the mood sometimes. Try to stay in the character.

    Marketing criticisms miss the point

I;='m not sure how well C&T, S&P and S&M did sell, but our gaming group picked up duplicate copies of all the players options books and converted our games wholesale. At first, it was lots of fun. Even the critical hits table was a blast even though it led to much maiming and broken limbs...

    Marketing criticisms miss the point

I was wondering about that. Who counts as being an RPGA member? I know I have one of their little cards, and I have participated in an RPGA tournament game or two, but not for a few years now. Am I counted in those numbers? I personally wouldn't count myself, but I'm surely on a list somewhere.

4E debut angst - more so than 3E?

I remember a fair bit of cynicism around the conversion from 1E to 2E - and quite a few groups were very slow in converting. Our group was one of those. We had the 2E books, but it was so similar to 1E that we kept playing 1E for a long time. Eventually we moved to a hybrid 1E/2E game and...

If you love 3.5 so much....go DM it!

I don't think you're right there. Most of the complaints I see are from people saying they are going to keep _running_ their games using a different system. As above, I'm not so sure that you have accurately pegged the demographic of the posting 4E dissenters. Most seem to be DMs. As for my...

    No Animate Dead?

Yea, I think it might have been a bit more interesting if they had gone with a straight law-chaos split (with the Primordials on the Chaos side). At least there would have been the possibility of ambiguity as to who really was the "bad guy" in the conflict.

You don't like the new edition? Tell me about it!

He really said this? That makes me more than just a little bit sad and disappointed in the 4E design team. It certainly explains some things though.

    3rd party 4e products?

I'm sure someone will eventually post a more informative reply, but you shouldn't expect to see any third party 4E products until October as per the GSL. At that time, I'm pretty sure that Necromancer Games will have some 4E material (and I'm sure some others as well).

So what happened to arcane and divine characters?

You know, in our 3.x games we usually found that it was the fighters (and sometimes rogues working with said fighters) who usually took out the arch-nemesis - at just about all levels. Of course they had help from the arcane and divine casters at getting to the arch-nemesis (via fly spells...

    Ok, just tell me Why

I just took a look at one of my old AD&D monster manuals and there indeed is more flavour text and ecology information there than you find for most of the 4E entries. I think they added even more with the 2E monster manual (or at least gave it its own section so it stood out more). 4E seems...

MMORPGs, what D&D players SHOULD learn from them

Our gaming group has always been mostly cooperative and highly tactically aware with all versions of the game (1E, 2E, C&T, 3.x). Occasionally a new player coming into the group would play a more selfish style, but they'd either eventually adapt to our more cooperative style or move on...

Okay people, a little wake up call.

Search and replace at will, but I disagree that wizards (and clerics) can do everything that everyone else can do. Consider the fighter since I was talking about them. There is no way a wizard can step into the shoes of a fighter. They simply don't have the combat feats or stamina for it...
