    Dead Again

Yes, you're right, that's what I'll have to do.

    Dead Again

It is the same penalty as being raised from the dead, except that I calculate the new XP proportionately rather than setting it at the halfway point.

    Dead Again

As a matter of fact, the vampire did come back, but was defeated by the party. Technically he couldn't reinstate himself into the party because he was under the control of the vampire who made him. I just shared this story because I thought it was funny, frankly. It's true I'm apathetic as...

    Dead Again

I think that one problem is that the players are not familiar with higher level characters and campaigns. I've played in them, so I have a good feel as to what is a challenge or not, and I personally am very familiar with the cleric spell list. Obviously, they do not work together as a team...

    Dead Again

One of my players has lost a third character since we began our campaign back in September. No other PCs have died except for his. He wonders what he's doing wrong. I know what's he doing wrong, but I don't think he can change. We are playing City of the Spider Queen in 3.5E. The players all...

    Flowchart of the Editions

When I played 2E, we always played that retreating from battle provoked an immediate attack from your enemy. We didn't call it an AoO, but that's what it was. Another similarity between Classic D&D and 3E was monster classes. The Creature Crucible expansions gave rules for playing monsters as...

    D&D 3.x Spells On Demand v1.1 (At-will spells in 3.5 Edition)

In the Harry Potter books, most attack spells were ranged touch attacks, which is something to keep in mind. Also, some spellcasters could cast more spells per round than others. I'm not sure how you'd incorporate that. A spell BAB? In fact, spell combat was a portrayed a lot like physical...

    New Player's Handbook Cover Art!

Oh I know. I didn't add the observation that this art would probably not turn away potential female players since a good chunk of the potential female market sees this kind of provocative dress as utterly normal. Edit: Navels aren't just statements anymore, they're standard issue. :\

    New Player's Handbook Cover Art!

Nothing intellectual about this picture! It's pure male sex id. The female figure has a lot of exposed skin, and the covering she does have on accentuates what it's covering, i.e. the push-up halter top. She is dressed as a sexual object, albeit a kewl and powerful one. But also look at...

    Any house rules for appearance/comliness?

I would roll a separately Appearance stat. 3d6 (or 4d6 drop the lowest if you must). Add the character's Charisma modifier. Elves get +2, half-elves get +1. This would allow you to rank everyone based on looks.

    Is This How Elves Live?

No. LotR didn't really show it (although the Hobbit hinted at it), but somebody in elven society is doing the grunt work of producing food and cleaning stuff. You can't really build permanent settlements without agriculture.

    Is 3x D&D a rules-heavy system? Is that a good/bad thing?

I'm running City of the Spider Queen in 3.5: VERY rules heavy. My players can't keep up with the maneuvers and spells they have, and yet they continue to ask to add in more options from the splats. Can't wait to take a break.

    Is This How Elves Live?

Standard elves have to be technologically and culturally advanced enough to produce spellbooks, since wizard is their favored class. (Yes, sorcerer would be a better favored class for D&D elves.) I'm pretty sure you have to have to be settled and civilized in order to produce books and ink in...

    Respect for the DM?

Oh God, if only it were that easy. DMing my first 3.5 campaign has made me realize what it must feel like to wheel a five-year-old through the cereal aisle.

Bad GM rulings? How would you rule?

1A. The walls listed in the DMG range from 6 in to 5 ft. The spell clearly implies you can cast in someone's space. You did right. 1B. No, they can't put their hand through without taking damage, even with reach! But the spell calls for a save for half, certainly. That's how I would...

    Obtain Familiar and warrior/mage PrC's

Obviously it would possible to build an enemy created specifically to destroy the familiar. I'm not sure why any DM would do that to a player, except for reasons of personal dislike. I'm not against the character having a bat familiar - I am against the non-spellcasting levels of the...

    Obtain Familiar and warrior/mage PrC's

Let me just say that if you were facing this party in combat, there is no way that you would focus your attacks on some bat flying around. I can't imagine a time when the enemy would go after the bat, and even if they did, it currently has 41 hp and can fly. No missile attack could take him...

    Obtain Familiar and warrior/mage PrC's

I don't think anyone in my group is foolish enough to have a normal familiar attack in combat. Obviously the bat familiar will be hovering about while the spellsword is in combat, but the only attacks that it would be affected by would be AoE attacks. The familiar has improved evasion and...

    Obtain Familiar and warrior/mage PrC's

The problem would not have been solved by saying "Your level for purposes of familiar advancement is your caster level" because of the Practiced Spellcaster feat. Honestly, the requirements are written in such a way that I don't think prestige classes were even considered. "Arcane caster...

    Obtain Familiar and warrior/mage PrC's

I have decided not to let the even-numbered levels of the Spellsword prestige class count toward improving the character's familiar if he takes the Obtain Familiar feat. (The even-numbered levels do not grant advancement in spellcasting.) I believe that the writer of the feat did not...
