What is a cambion? What about a yugaloth?

Nitpick Dep't: The cambion appeared before the AD&D MM2. Let's see, Iuz is a cambion (pretty much THE cambion), and I believe he appears in the 1980 WoG Folio - but is his descent given therein? Don't recall. Any earlier cambion sightings? Here's something heretofore unmentioned in this thread...

    D&D 4th Edition

[Gutboy is asleep at his keyboard, dreaming...] zzzzzz.....huh, ghost of D&D past? I must be dreaming. You look like Dave Arneson, dude. Whuzzat? Yes, I see, we're in the '80s when Lorraine kicked out Brian Blume and then Gary...what's yer point?...zzzzz....wha? Ghost of D&D present? Yeah...

What is 3.0 & 3.5 missing that previous editions had?

    edit - double post. grrr.

What is 3.0 & 3.5 missing that previous editions had?

What is 3.0 & 3.5 missing that previous editions had? Gygax. Terse answer but that one word literally speaks volumes. White Box had "it". AD&D 1e and 1.5e had "it". AD&D 2e and 2.5e did not. D&D 3e and 3.5e do not. Holmes Basic, Moldvay BX, Mentzer BXCMI and the RC did not. Some of the...

    How to - by editions

Y'know, Diaglo was being funny, but his answer runs deep as well. The farther back you go in the editions, the looser the mechanics and rule coverage are. This wide open approach is not everyone's cup of tea - and for others, neither are the newer editions where all is exhaustively...

Making new D&D work for old D&D

Figured C&C might come up in this thread :) While I am really excited about C&C, I don't think it has much to do with Gene's proposal. If I read it right, Gene's calling for a collaborative conversion of any/all post-1e D&D materials - that's 2e and 3/3.5e - back into AD&D format. So, since C&C...

Old D&D books you still use

For DMing: AD&D 1e Monster Manual AD&D 1e Players Handbook AD&D 1e Dungeon Masters Guide AD&D 1e Monster Manual II AD&D 1.5e Unearthed Arcana ;) On the shelf collecting dust: Everything AD&D 2e Everything D&D 3e except: For playing, in one other campaign in my group: D&D 3e Players Handbook

Piratecat's dungeon design: fun with tesseracts!

Ahhh, Piratecat, thanks for bringing back fond memories. Read both of the Tesseract pieces in Best of Dragon and the idea captivated me for a long time. Stuck a few in my dungeons through the years. Went totally mad and mapped the inner planes on one, linked to the outer planes mapped on...

What world would you like to play in?

My picks, not mentioned in this thread so far: Jack Vance's Demon Princes please! Zelazny's Amber. (Not to be confused with the Chateau D'Amberville/Castle Amber material published way back by T$R.) Julian May's Pliocene Exile. Commentary on items already mentioned: Dune: Oh Yes. Puleeeze...

Elves, Orcs and Dwarves - Old Testament Flavored Setting

These are great ideas, Paka. I'm fond of stuff like this. My own campaign's cosmolgy shares some touchstones with your ideas: There is a Creator, the only true divinity. In the campaign he is "offstage", letting his world and peoples mature and grow on their own, working only very quietly here...

    Do you like rules-heavy systems?

Rules-light is my preference. 3/3.5e is rules-heavy but I play 3e and I have fun. I play Moldvay Basic when I can and have more fun. Always lurking around the boards to see the various 3e-lite projects folks are brewing. :) See my sig, my answer to edition wars.

When gaming groups and campaigns collapse

Real Life, check. Evil Significant Other, check. Here's one: Wanker Player in a group of guys who are too non-confrontational to stand up to the problem - a real destroyer. Groups that have been together for 1d2 decades ;) : To avoid the Dreaded Staleness, switch DMs, play PCs out of type...

Saw the Basic box set my freshman year of college in my Friendly College-Town Head Shop :)

PCs vs. 1-mile long living airship!

A wee bit off-topic, but an aside about living airships: Anyone read John Varley's Gaea trilogy: Titan, Wizard and Demon? There are huge bioengineered living airships in these books which get their lift from hydrogen. (No smoking!) Always wanted to use them in my game somehow, along with some...

    Describe your "gaming area" please

One of our group is a single guy living in a two-bedroom place. He made the second bedroom a game room, all kinds of games. There is a 5ft. diameter round poker table covered with green felt, with wells for poker chips, dice, etc. He installed a huge whiteboard which nearly spans one entire wall...

    Characters defined by "their stuff"

Yes! Well said. Just a smidge of PC backstory and goalsetting can make for big fun, even for the hardcore powergamer. Dang, Gnarlo - you made me spit coffee! :D Stuff usually does help define all kinds of characters, lit'rary and RPG. I guess the goal here is not let that totally identify our...

    A Rather Odd Dilemma...

Heh. Some years back, I went into the local mini-mart to buy a newspaper, while chatting with clerk I referred to my coins as "jink". Stared at me like I was a Martian...
